It’s nice to be back in Norway! I really loved it last time I was here (+10yrs ago) so when I was trying to think of where to go for first trip “post” (I know it’s not done, y’all know what I mean) Covid it had to be Iceland layover and when I looked at my options Norway jumped right back out at me. I’m giving myself a few days in Oslo again, but then I’m renting a car to go exploring up towards Alesund and back. I’m so excited for the fjords and all their beauty! Last time I just did Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim and Tromso - so I’m excited to get a bit off the city path.
Anyway, back to today! My fav thing in Oslo back then was Vigeland Park, so that’s where I headed to first! So many sculptures, so much fun people watching. I really missed that aspect of travel - just watching the world go by. Anyway, here it’s fun bc you have kids crawling all over the statues and you have people trying to recreate some of the poses - you always have something new to see.
It’s such a great idea
for a park though - some of the poses are poignant, speaking with great depth and emotion. Others are just wild to look at - I will forever love the man punch juggling three infants while drop kicking another lol. The monolith is impressive in its design, and again all the statues in that area are so simplistic yet tell the tale of humanity. I just love it.
Rest of the day I kind of wandered around different neighbourhoods on the trams - it’s fun to see the differences and see random graffiti (but like pretty graffiti) all over. Part of my random roaming brought me to Mathallen (food hall market thing) and I found a whole alcove of graffiti which was a fun find.
I also ventured down to the waterfront, the iconic Opera House and all that. Last time I was here I did the museums (such a great variety!) so I won’t repeat them, but it’s still nice to walk around and see what’s changed and what hasn’t.
Idk I just really like Oslo - it’s quite the eclectic mix of old and new - it makes me wish Ottawa could get its shit
together planning wise.
Other random notes from today:
- I forgot how much I love their potetsalat. Idk what’s in it, I feel I don’t want to know, I just want a whole container k thanks.
- Also yogurt comes in a bag? I must try this.
- It’s like being in a weird time warp to 2019 - no masks anywhere, no sign of Covid life anywhere. It’s a very odd feeling.
- E-scooters everywhere. Like somewhat annoyingly so. Not bad on the roads, but people leave them all over the sidewalks. This was the case in Reykjavik too.
