Geo: 52.4292, 4.77933Very good hostel breakfast - 3 cheeses and meats, assorted buns and bread (I stuck to the multi-grain bread), plain yogurt, cereal, juice, coffee, biscuits and even hard boiled eggs. Mmmm ... the last time I ate a hard-boiled egg for breakfast while traveling was at a hotel in Barcelona. They had a very nice, rich peanut butter. I stuffed myself - old hostel habits die hard! You gotta go to town on freebies! They actually had a sign posted - they'll make and pack you a lunch for 5 Euros. It was conspicuously placed to discourage people from making their own lunches and running off with it. Not that I would know anything about that ... I've got a sleepy bunch of people in my hostel room - they were all sleeping last ... read more

Sept. 9 We were exhausted because we had absolutely no sleep last night. We went to Haarlem on a train and stayed there for the night Sept. 10 We took a bus to Zandvoort which is a beach town where the beaches run for miles and mile along the west coast of Ireland. We walked for miles and miles on the beach and accidently walked across a nude beach. We were a little shocked. The sand was really white and soft and there were seashells, I collected as many as I could. We walked to a lighthouse and then went back to Amsterdam. We did the coffee shop thing one and ended up playing monopoly all night This is a little FYI and for myself! - Holland had the tallest people in the world. I can't ... read more

So, first stop, Haarlem. It was only a 20 minute drive from Schipol (everything is only 20 minutes drive away in Holland!). Once we got into town though, we drove around for a good 15 minutes looking for a place to park ! Working the street parking for the first time was a challenge too. With no coins in pocket, we 'had to' have breakfast first.... read more

Amanda Country number 2. Okay so I think that maybe Holland has a lot of bikes too. I'm suffering from language confusion again but most people we have spoken to so far are able to understand our English. So far in our adventures in Holland we have seen lots of ol buildings, been inside a windmill, walked a lot, had train trips, been on a boat tour and looked at some more markets. We spent the rest of Saturday (our 31 hour day!) and most of Sunday recovering from jet lag and much confusion as to why it is light here at 8pm. Today we have just gotten back to Haarlem (a little west of Amsterdam) from a day trip to Rotterdam where we met up with a new friend from Holland and her fiance from ... read more

David, Katherine, and I left for the Netherlands on Saturday morning. Katherine had a cough, but we thought it was just a cold and that she was getting over it. Before we left Baumholder we stopped by the local post office to pick up some packages. The main post office is right by where we live, but the packages weren’t there. David said they were in this little shop that sold backpacks and bags. The place had a little German post office emblem on it, but it also had a sign for “LOTTO.” I thought it was just a little store that sold lottery tickets and had a post drop-box or something, so I thought David was crazy when he wanted me to stop there. I didn’t even get out of the car with him, but ... read more

I have spent the last two days out in the Duthc countryside. First I visisted the smaller town of Haarlem. Kinda of a cool place it was sort of like a mini-Amsterdam. After this I headed to the Kaucenhoff ? which is a huge 100 acre tulips garden. I have some amazing pictures which i really like to up soon. The next day i rented a bike and head far out in the counrtyside across dikes and around old villages and windmills...it reminded me of the delta back home somewhat. The land here is very new as the dutch are always pushing the sea back to make more land for their small country. Certainly a high light of the trip.... read more
