A smaller little city north of Amsterdam is Haarlem. Not far at all actually with only fifteen minutes on the train and is perfect for a day trip from Amsterdam but we managed to stay for two nights in the end. It is also a great alternative base than Amsterdam to not only for the tourist to Amsterdam but the locals for the cheaper prices and much quieter streets. It has all the charm that is expected in a small tourist town but unlucky for us the weather turned bad for the two days we were visiting and constant storms were coming and going. We did still manage to do some walking around the city, no major tourist attractions just small alleys ways and much cleaner dykes that the ones in Amsterdam. We pretty much took ... read more

I am not going to name the blogs by the day number anymore since it makes the end of the vacation seem to be too soon! So, today we went to Linnaeushof which is a kids amusement park. Similar to England, the park was very much a self-propelled event. By this I mean, the kids have to cycle to get the rides to go, or push or pull or climb. Nothing is motorized and the kids had a blast! This is the first overcast day we've had and it looked like it would rain all day but we got lucky and it held off. It was probably a good day to go to the park as a hot sunny day would have drawn much bigger crowds I'm sure. Lori (our GPS navigator that is) led us ... read more

Hello everyone, good morning! Sorry about the delay in our first post...experiencing technical difficulties with the wifi on my iPod :( However!! We arrived to Amsterdam just before 7am local time (1am for us) on the 8th with less than an hour sleep on the plane for the night. From the airport we were overwhelmed by the number of locals who were eager and friendly in helping us in the right direction. We jumped a train, and found ourselves wandering the streets of Amsterdam while we waited for the locals to get out of bed and get us some bikes!! We found a small local bike rental (we'll have to send Rick Steves a message about his current recommended rental spot!) and we were on our way to explore the city. Maps on hand, we were ... read more

When I think of the Netherlands (NL) I think of tall skinny buildings and canals. There certainly is a lot of each, but what struck me the most is the bicycles. They are everywhere. There are more people on bikes in Amsterdam than in cars. The sidewalks are all quite wide with a slightly different surface on half. That is for bikes. If a bike lane isn't part of the sidewalk there is one on the street. You can bike anywhere in the city; in the NL even, and feel quite safe. Many bike paths in the countryside also. It takes awhile to get used to traffic signals because there are separate signals for pedestrians, cars and bikes. When it comes to right of way, bikes rule. Don't cross a bike lane without looking both ways. ... read more

A little time left on our internet purchase so here are some "foodie" tidbits. According to the audio tape at the historical museum Amsterdam is the most culturally diverse city in the world with over 175 culures represented in its citizenry. I can believe it when you look at the diversity of their restaurants. In an area that would be considered a restaurant district there are Italian, Thai, Oriental, Agentine Steakhouses, Indian, Indonesian, pancake houses and cafes. The pancake houses and cafes are closest to what you might call traditional cuisine. However, the pancakes are crepes and come with a huge variety of fillings from basic ham and cheese to thai or curry. There are also a multitude of Subways, McDonalds and KFC's. The day we went to the museum we ate at a small corner ... read more

In the meantime of settling in, job searching/starting and accepting and going out with my boy I got the best present ever! My dad came! Oh it is the best present really when you have not seen your family for so long and then someone visits. I told dad this was better than any Christmas present. Dad flew in on 27 October. On the first day in Amsterdam on the 28 of October we spent walking around Amsterdam. Despite the long length I think dad enjoyed it. The 2nd day of dads expedition to the Netherlands we were in Amsterdam again, sight seeing and shopping for clothes for me! We even got a canal tour around Amsterdam which I enjoyed also haha it was different to the peddling boats. Have a look at the pics: http://picasaweb.google.com/dkruchkoff/AmsterdamWithDad20081029?authkey=iXL6NzfRLNs&feat=directlink ... read more

The Zaanse Schans is a township which lies in the industrial area along the River Zaan. Here lie perfect examples of homes as they were in days gone by, together with 6 working windmills, some of which have been reconstructed on this site, and some which have always stood on this site, but which have had bits and pieces from other windmills added to them to reconstruct them completely. Of course it was raining! We took the train to Zaandam, then a bus to the Schans. On the way home we stayed on the bus just a little too long and ended up God knows where. Eventually, we found our way back to the Zaandam station and then went to the town of Haarlem. My hometown (or rather city) of Haarlem lies just north-east of Amsterdam, ... read more

Well, this is where it begins. We're packed (mostly) and just about ready to enter the southern hemisphere for the first time. Well. Nearly. After Heathrow. And a long flight. And a couple of probably very confused days in Bangkok. And another flight. But anyway... we're ready... bring it on! Hopefully, we will get a chance to post stuff here during our journey, but I won't make any promises... it's gonna depend on how often we find ourselves connected and so forth. But you never know. Now, time for another beer...... read more
