Visiting family in the morning is a sure recipe for excellent coffee and rich desserts. A visit with Johan and Carlos in Den Bosch was no different. I had not seen my cousin Johan since he visited us when he was a 12-year old boy, he’s 51 now. We had seen a lot from him and Carlos in Facebook, since they are avid travelers, and it was sure nice to meet up. Marion could not get over their neighbourhood, being near a small canal that runs along people’s backyards filled with a variety of flowers, and kept spotlessly maintained of course. I had visited the Kilsdonkse Molen near Veghel in 2015 and wanted to make sure Marion got to see it. It’s the only operating wind and water mill in the Netherlands and maybe anywhere, and ... read more

By 10 am the temperature was already in the thirties. After our morning coffee we settled into a shady spot under the chestnut tree in the backyard where there was a bit of a breeze, and were soon cooling off in the pool. Good time to do our laundry. We hung them outside and Marion’s was dry in less than an hour. I left mine out to dry when we left to meet friends from my teens in a town called Uden, about 30 km from Eindhoven. Everything seems to be that distance from here. It was so good to meet up with Cees and Henny, Ad and Herma, and Karla. Cees and Henny’s house is a real nice spot! Cees and I many years ago rode our bicycles with full camping gear, surplus military stuff ... read more

In spite of the heat, it was hard to get up this morning. Air conditioning in these parts are rare, since this kind of heat wave normally only lasts for a few days before the rains return. Not this summer. Windows and drapes are kept closed during the day to keep out the heat, then opened at night to get fresh and colder air back in. There are no insect screens here, so when the windows are open at night, we keep the lights low, or off, to keep away the few mosquitos they have here. The one or two that do get by our defences can be annoying though as you hear them buzzing around your naked skin. Our plan today was to stay in air-conditioned places like museums. We started off at the Nuenen ... read more

Two of my aunts are quite elderly, one is 96 and the other 93, and no trip here would be complete without a visit to these very spry ladies. Each live independently in retirement apartments and are a wealth of information for many stories, some quite funny, others less so. What was so satisfying was to see how positive they are, and how they present themselves. I’m loving having some of the same genes! After we got back to Eindhoven we had some quick dinner and a couple of cold ones, then walked over to the Philips Stadion to watch local professional voetbal (soccer) team, always a contender in The Netherlands (22 national titles), take on Basel from Switzerland in the Championship League. According to local “experts” the soccer was not all that good, but the ... read more

We just learned that the city of Tilburg, a mere 12 km from my home town of Vught, now has the largest summer fair in the country. It also happens that today is Rose (pronounced “rozz” Maandag, or what we might call Rainbow Monday. This is an event everyone talks about so we headed there today. We were not disappointed, it’s quite the show. Not only is the fair spread out all over the downtown area, we saw some pretty sick rides that I’m no longer ready to embark on. And of course the gay and lesbian communities put on quite the show, with all being dressed in various shades of pink (called rose in Dutch). The lavender fields on the Vughtse Heide are not yet in bloom, maybe another week. We’ll have to go back! ... read more

It was our plan to go to mass at St. Jan Cathedral in ‘s Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch), but we took too long to get going and got there late. So instead we walked around this gorgeous building and nearby streets to admire the architecture and feeling of the city. I believe that the church was built between 1200 and 1500 AD. In those days parishioners would have donated their expertise and labour being good members of the parish. Den Bosch has a long and interesting history throughout the middle ages and more recent times, having been a stronghold during several wars and occupations by the French and Spanish at different times, too long a history to write here. We had lunch with good friends Marianne and Pieter in Boxtel and spent many hours chatting about our ... read more

We must still be somewhat jet lagged. I slept until 10am today. Today we went to market, on 18 Septemberplein, named after the day Eindhoven was liberated by the Canadians. By all accounts, this mid-week market is a small one. Usually the Saturday markets are larger. Yet we found many interesting things, like several cheese stands, fish stands, vegetable & fruit stands, and many textile stands. Also a McDonalds of course, who charge only €0.30 for a pee. Sellers scream out their wares to attract the attention of the many passersby. Not having had lunch and Marion needing her regular meals, we tried some of the Kibbeling, everyone’s favourite here by the looks of it. Kibbeling is chunks of cod tongues deep fried to perfection, with a side of tartar sauce. No fries, no veggies, just ... read more

We had our breakfast in the backyard this morning, having a nice chat with Richte our host. He’s an independent green energy consultant, specializing in solar. He’s very knowledgeable and has some pretty rational ideas about the topic as well as politics. Then we headed off to the PSV fan day to take a tour of the stadium and museum. Lots of people and they’re quite fanatic about their team. PSV have won 22 national championships, a European Cup and a UEFA Cup. The stadium features electronic and lighting features supported by Philips, still its major sponsor. We ended the day with dinner at my sister Annemie’s place.... read more

One hour before we were supposed to leave to catch our bus to Montreal International Airport, we got an email from KLM that our flight was cancelled, no reason given. Say what? Luckily there appeared to be some options, so we ended up changing to Air France (same company), but the plane would leave an hour earlier, we’d have to fly through Paris, and would arrive in Amsterdam about 2 hours later. At least that was better than waiting until the following day. We could have been a bit pressed for time at Montreal but luckily we’re able to catch an earlier bus. As we got on the plane, I realized there are different kinds of people when it comes to personal hygiene. Person A practices good hygiene and will realize when others don’t. Person B ... read more

We had wonderful weather the few days we were in Holland. It gave us the opportunity to see a little place called Woudrichem. It is one of the defence places called the water linie It is ringed by dykes and walls. and it dates from around the 1500 hundreds. Very interesting place. Could make nice photos there. We walked through the small place and had something to eat. Spending the whole afternoon there was no problem. So much to see you run out of time. Extremely nice weather that evening we could sit outside with a drink and talk about all sorts and that is what you do with Family you have not seen for a few years. Next few days were for repacking and washing, but on Sunday we celebrated Hugo's birthday. Nice to have ... read more
