The drive from Dubrovnik to Kotor Montenegro is a short one, but it involves a change in worlds. Croatia is blessed with a beautiful coast extending for hundreds of miles of shoreline, including islands. The bounteous sun is almost ever-present, and tourists are plentiful. As a result, they have had the money to invest in their infrastructure and it shows. Roads are well-constructed and well-maintained. Hotels are everywhere, and restaurants plentiful. Almost everyone speaks English, a virtual necessity in the tourist trade. The parliamentary government is apparently well-organized, and the population is relatively homogeneous. Croatia has emerged from the break-up of the old Yugoslavia and the resulting civil war with a bright future, realizable now. As far as I can tell, the same is true for Slovenia, although we did not see as much there. It ... read more

Montenegro, aka "Black Mountain" as expected, a country with only mountain roads. We entered the country without any special border formalities. This country was on my bucket list and off course initial research was done prior the visit. Our first stop is at "Sveti Stefan". This is a small island with a connection to the shore. It is known as the Monaco of the Adriatic coast, where these days the high profile elites are visiting the resort. We attempted a chance to look the island from close. When we arrived to the beach in front of the island, we immediately got an impression regarding the visitors. Ladies were going to the beach dressed like they were going to the theater. Also the prices of renting a beach chair were insane. 60 euros if you want to ... read more

This is a story of love, beauty and dedication. Like the sea, the wind and the land, it goes on forever and cannot be changed by the passing of time. The tale must be read to the end, or you cannot understand. The narrative has taken years to write, but will only take minutes to read. It is a timeless drama that many others have experienced and no doubt have shared on these pages before. Hopefully you have, or will, experience a similar tale in your travels and more importantly in your life. There is a land, far away, where the mountains rise directly from the sea. Somewhat barren and rocky, they tower over the azure sea, majestically rising to granite peaks a thousand feet above. The August sun warms early and angrily blisters the land ... read more

I didn't learn from last time and so I spent all of my remaining Bosnian marka before leaving the country - only to realise that I had to pay for f*cking luggage again! Luckily I still had a 10KM note (about 5€) on me that I was going to use to try and change for euros but now that I had to break it, I wasn't sure if any bureau de changewould now take my Bosnian coins. FFS Derek. Again! But some blame must lie with the fact there is a luggage fee in the first place. Why not make things easier and include it in the price of the bus ticket like every other country in the world? I was on an overnight bus for a seven hour journey - so probably not long enough ... read more

Verschillende onderzoeken gebeuren, maar we moeten... read more

Two years ago when we went on our last family cruise, we went to Montenegro. Two years later, another family cruise and we’re stopping in Montenegro. Last time we visited Kotor, Our Lady of the Rock church and were on our way to Budva but the traffic was terrible and we were afraid we’d miss the ship if we went all the way there. Today, much more luck. For one, it was a Regent excursion so no worries about them leaving without us and, secondly, there was not a huge wedding in Budva which there was the last time we in country. Additionally, it was sunny and beautiful today which it was not two years ago. We woke up early to watch the sail in since Kotor is located at the apex of a fjord. The ... read more

Zo missen we de belangrijkste matchen... read more

Woolly says – We seemed to be on a slow start to the morning, Jo wandered round looking vaguely grumpy as Zoe lay struggling to wake up.....damp beds and loud children appeared to be the problem, I however felt great and ready for our assault on the Fortress. Having finally prised them both out of the door we made a quick stop at the bakery for some sustenance, we had planned on tinned peaches, something that we all liked, but alas there was no tin opener, even the mighty tusks had not yielded the fruit so cheese pasties were the way forward. I stepped out taking my companions in through the city gates once more and was prepared for a walk amongst Kotor’s bustling streets to the lane that led up to the fortress high above ... read more

Woolly says – With mere seconds to spare I climbed abroad the bus leaving Jo and Zoe to sort out the baggage, well I mean I had a seat and I’m sure one of them could stand for the fairly short journey to Kotor! He’s all heart! Having moved him up we all managed to squeeze in and a mere forty minutes later we were stepping down into our next new town. Woolly says – History time.....why do my students always sigh like that when I start my daily lecture?!!!! Ignoring the sighs I began.....The Mediterranean port of Kotor is surrounded by fortifications built during the Venetian period, so lots of castles for me to look at! Located on the Bay of Kotor which is one of the most indented parts of the Adriatic Sea, known ... read more
