We rose looking forward to setting foot in a new country for both of us. The forecast was for showers all day, so it was with some trepidation that we made our way to the Lido. We were still making our way to the harbor where we would set anchor and tender ashore. The weather did not look great from the window in the Lido, there was a low ceiling and we could make out the shoreline. I had my Irish Oatmeal, banana and some Swiss muesli. Sharon had some potatoes and toast. We were back in the room getting ready for our tour when they made an announcement over the outside intercom. All I could discern that they were closing the outside decks to keep passengers safe. When we walked into the Showroom to assemble ... read more

Today we are being tendered into Kotor, Montenegro. Waters were very calm so no issues there. Anikea began to tell us about a very old culture with too many changes in their history to list. The bus ride to our first stop… well that’s what you needed the gravol for…. We were to go to visit a small village for a snack after traveling over the mountain. Enough switchbacks that they have the numbered. 29 is at the top. AND they only count the true switchbacks not just a bend or a tight curve. I loved the views. Absolutely spectacular. I checked all 4 corners on the bus, not a mark – before or after. Imagine getting half way through the switch back and having to back up because the bus couldn’t turn tight enough. OK ... read more

"Why did you come to Montenegro?" This is the question the locals ask us when we tell them we have come from Australia. They must underrate the natural beauty of their country (the coast line at least) as we think it is worth a visit. Bar was our first destination (its the name of the town not the type we often visit to drink!) and one that I had not expected to linger in for very long, but we decided that we liked the laid back feel of this rather modern town with a lot of sporting facilities near our apartment. The beach is long and there is a pedestrian path alongside it, which we used for our morning runs. We also passed the large basketball stadium, many football (soccer) pitches, a good athletics track, tennis ... read more

We stepped out of our apartment much refreshed the next day and just had time to get breakfast in a cafe and walk around the town for an hour or so. On account of the hike up the Jerzeski Peak the day before and the ridiculous heat at 9 am, we decided to leave the 1350 or so steps of the Kotor walls and fortress for a return trip (we'd also seen the state of the people that had just come back down!!). The town is considered the best preserved Medieval city in Europe and is full of old world charm. It's a bit bigger than Trogir and overall feels more spacious. Although we liked Trogir, we definitely preferred Kotor Old Town and the whole area in general. On the way in the day before we ... read more

We had a worryingly long wait on the border crossing from BiH into Montenegro which consisted of fifteen minutes of guard changes, papers and passports disappearing into the main office and the booth window being shut on us. At one point we wondered if the rest of our holiday may have to be spent in no mans land between the two countries. The fact that none of the staff knew how to smile didn't help much. Once out we went down a road that was narrow and really poorly made (much like the BiH roads). We eventually came to what looked like a brand new road that had been sliced out of the rock. There were points were you could see tarmac from the old road almost up at eye level, which showed how far they ... read more

Kotor - 6th-8th July 2015 I didn't think it possible to fall in love with a destination instantaneously before even getting to your accommodation. Montenegro is a breathtakingly beautiful place. From crossing the border the bus winds around the coast to take me to Kotor, my home for the next 2 nights. When I get there, there's no time to waste. I am eager to explore this location. My accomodation is in the 'Old Town' and is fabulous. My room contains an old stone feature wall and I can see the church bells from my room. This ended up being the bain of my life when they chimed every hour and at 7am burst into another medley as if the hourly chimes weren't enough!! This was my first time staying in a hostel and I would ... read more

The rule was no Christmas music unless the temperature fell below 8°. Leaving the farm, we achieved this, and I tortured everyone and delighted myself with three (or maybe four) Christmas songs. The cold temperatures in conjunction with our lack of cold-weather/hiking/hanging out on the farm-clothes made all of us anxious for the coast of Montenegro with beaches, sun and warmth. We were on our way through Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, with the destination of Budva, a super touristy beach resort town. None of us gravitate toward hanging out in super touristy beach resort towns but we were on the cusp of tourist season, so Budva was serenely empty. We happily settled into our villa near old town, checked out the beach and had salad for dinner to offset some of the pounds of cheese ... read more

When nothing is planned, anything is possible. This was why we didn’t plan the road trip further out than the first two nights. The original idea was to drive to Durmitor National Park in Montenegro but with rain and cold temperatures in the forecast, we instead opted on heading to Lipovo to a farm we saw in the world’s worst guide book. The book pictured baby goats in one photo and cheese in another - there was no way I wasn't sold on this new plan. As we drove in, we got a better impression of what we were in for, or rather decided we had no idea what we were in for. We followed a series of yellow signs for Milijanka’s cheese farm on a one-lane road past small farmhouses for what seemed like miles ... read more

MONTEGRENO 2 The French Riviera was along time ago. Ah – those balmy beaches of St Tropez Frejis and Cannes. Bodies laid out on those funny deck chairs. All in columns and rows along a rocky shore, with an azure blue sea and patches of turquoise where snorkelers swim. Well here we are at Ulcinj on the Montegreno Riviera. Not as big as the French show. Not as flash- Indeed markedly downmarket compared to Monaco– like dropping down from Little Cove Noosa to Beachmere instead. Except that Beachmere has year round warmth, grassy foreshores, and sand. Sand sand – glorious sand. No sand sighted yet on the Mediterranean, Adriatic or Ionian seas. Here at Ulcinj its big rocks, little rocks, big pebbles, little pebbles, and sharp edged grit. Not much of a surface to promenade on ... read more

MONTEGRENO 1 We knew we had crossed the border from Croatia. The first sign that we had crossed the border was that the 40+ minute wait at the border was over. Then before we drove far at all – it felt like we were back on Italian roads. Not bad roads , but corrugated and a bit pot holey – not as wide and not as smooth as those of Croatia. Obviously not as much money here. Then the shops beside the road- looking a bit more like they sell junk. And the houses a little less loved. Not much new structure or infrastructure. Faces of the people we encounter display a tougher life – perhaps a bit of stress. From the road the most apparent difference is a devil may care attitude to driving. Montegreno ... read more
