Or to be more precise: one continent, an ocean, two seas, three planes, a taxi, a shuttle, a bus…and 38 hours later I arrived at my final destination in Palermo, Sicily. In the interim, I was too exhausted and weary by the time I figured out the domestic flight situation to take the train in to Rome. Neither was Air One the model of efficiency on that particular day--I feared missing my connection. Since my layover was whittled down from 7 hours to about 4, Rome will have to wait until another trip! The bus from the airport deposited us at the main train station in the historic quarter of the city. A gentleman from Australia was also in search of his hotel, so we set out together in hopes of finding our information adequate and ... read more

One day I (Margo) may find all the language necessary to describe the experience of visiting an Italian post office. Suffice to say, it is a sociological event like no other. The agent with whom I dealt today spoke no English and, as often happens under stress, my pidgin Italian completely failed me. However, we did manage to figure out that mailing insured parcels to Canada is akin to pouring money down a hole: over 39 euro for one package weighing less than 1 kg!! So, everyone, stuff is coming uninsured and unregistered but well prayed for, and should be there in a few days...God willing and international post complying. I should mention that the agent was very kind, gracious, helpful, and willing to listen and try to interpret my linguistic scrambling. I am not ... read more

This entry is not really for family and friends but for lurkers who may have been reading along about the Flying Grandmas' treks up and up and up and only slightly down and thinking that long held dreams of visiting Italy are not likely to come true due to illness. This past week, while waiting in line at the Duomo, I met a couple from the US. The woman was wearing a pin associated with breast cancer so, being a survivor mysef, I asked if she is one too. She is. Within the space of a very few minutes, we went from being strangers to hugging and crying and sharing the harsh reality of this sisterhood we never really wanted to join. Later in the week, I met a woman who is doing mollecular research on ... read more

Well Finals have arrived upon me. I don't think I have ever studied this hard in my life and I don't know if I have any sanity anymore. Here I am to take a break and tell you about my grand trip to Venice. Things have been great here at Uni, but I can't believe I only have 16 days till I am back in TX. It is sad, exciting, scary, and a whole other load of emotions mixed together to help with my craziness. Last night I got to be a nerd and got to see the 145 showing of Star Wars. Josh and I talked about going forever ago and I thought I was going to be the only girl, but I wasn’t! Josh's whole block went and it was a great laugh! I ... read more

The loosely knit plan was to go from northern Italy over to Romania, hit the Carpathian mountains and follow them back into Slovakia and the Czech Republic, then continue to the UK. Unfortunately, The Alps were between me & Romania. It’s a tough job but, someone had to do it. From Parma, I headed north to the south shore of Lake Garda. My route took me along the west bank of Lake Garda. Quite an impressive road as it is dug out of a sheer cliff face. About half the time was spent diving into tunnels dug in the cliffside then darting back out into the bright sunshine. Continuing north towards Madonna Di Campiglio, I traversed the northern Italian wine growing regions. If there were ever an Olympics for scenery, Italy would be on the podium ... read more

YEAH Venice- we love Venice!!! And it looks just like it does in the movies, with the gondolas and canals! First we left Rome and headed to Verona, where the real Romeo and Juliet were from. It was a really neat little city, and we even checked out the infamous balcony. After a long drive we didn't do much in the evening just hung around the campground, we mostly stayed indoors as there were MASSIVE mosquitos there. The next am we woke up early and took a ferry over to Venice, no cars are allowed on the islands and Venice is made up of 100 something islands altogether. Our group had a glass blowing and lace making demonstration, both were pretty neat. Our tour guide Anna told us the number one thing to do in Venice ... read more

We are finding it hard to believe that our two weeks in Siena are nearly over. Saturday morning we check out of the Sanctuaria Santa Caterina and head for Florence. I will not be surprised if both Leslie and I shed a tear or two as Siena disappears into the horizon behind the bus. We have met some lovely people here and will be posting information about our favourite food store and wine store so future travellers can visit them. Imagine our surprise the other day when we learned that one of the owners of the wine store spent her honeymoon in western Canada, in Edmonton, Vancouver, Victoria, Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise, and Calgary. An immediate bond, of course; Nicolleti is now our amica (our friend). I don't remember if Leslie explained the Sienese contradas at ... read more

Teatro Communale-Maggio Musicale Fiorentino 68th year ...keeping you in touch with my social life... Klajd and I go to see a new staging of the opera TOSCA by Puccini. The theater is nothing special, but the orchestra is talented and as soon as the curtains open, the set design proves just as wmrthy. From what I can gather from the story (the Italian text written above the stage…but quickly and in operatic terminology which tends to shorten its words and skip over other parts of speech) and my mother’s narration, this is how Tosca goes…one of the three protagonists is a character named Mario, a painter working in a church, who is in love with Floria Tosca. Much of the Opera are grand duets or arias by either/or both of these two describing their deep ... read more
