Day 13 wednesday Today Lissa and I where on our own as the kids where to tired to keep up with old guys, likely story. we headed out early for Bagno Vagoria to look around and catch the bus to Civita. This old hill top town is one of Rick Steves highly reccomended secrets and Lissa can find them all. The bus took us 2 miles to a bridge that takes you 1 mile across a foot bridge 800 feet above the valley and its very steep on the other side. When we got to the other side Lissa noticed an old builing that was once a old castle. it was called the door to no where.all u see is this beautiful door with a window and a buzzer and on the other side is a 800 ... read more

Monday, October 1, 2007 - Last day in Roma! Okay, let’s take stock and see what we HAVEN’T done here. The Appia Antica and catacombs and another outlet. And away we GO! Kevin and I expected the Catacombs to be like the ones in Paris, and they weren’t, at all. We only went into one, St. Sebastian, but it was very interesting to see the tomb rooms, and the burial niches, dating from the 3-4th Century. They were not hiding places for the Christians to escape persecution, but rather underground Christian cemeteries that were also safe havens as the Romans respected the dead, no matter what their religion. Another myth debunked! At any rate, we were able to get an English tour before they closed for lunch, and then went for a walk down the Appia. ... read more

Oh no! Our last full day in Italy. How to decide what to visit, but more importantly, we had to make sure that we had our final tastes of all the good Italian food. Luckily, because this is Italy, we were pretty sure to land on our feet no matter what we did. And, oh boy, did we land on our feet. We decided to drive out to Orvieto through the Umbrian countryside. Absolutely stunning and, what amazed me, really different from Tuscany. One would think because they are so close together that they would be more or less the same. One would be wrong. We arrived in Orvieto and found rock star parking right next to the cathedral. A word on the driving. Mom was an absolute star and did all the driving, which is ... read more

Sunday, we had to get out of Roma. It's filthy, crowded, noisy, the people are rude, and the food is ho hum. So we hopped a local train to Orvietto, 1 hour away. We took a funiculare to the old city. This hillside town is the summer residence of many of the Popes and dates back to 800 BC when the Etruscans settled. The 13th century Duomo is one of Italy's most beautiful Duomi. It was built to shelter the relic of the Miracle of Bolsena, which happened in 1263 just south of Orvietto. A doubting priest who questioned the sacrement of the Transfiguration (the host contains the incarnation - the actual body and blood of Christ - for all you non Catholics) witnessed that the bleeding host had stained the linen altar cloth. The cloth ... read more

Geo: 42.6443, 12.2299Exhausted. Less than 5 hours sleep last night. It's like I'm in Calgary all over again! I think I'll need a nap later. The dreary and rainy weather doesn't exactly invigorate me, either. Perhaps an early morning gelato is in order, as a pick-me-up. Took the train to Orvieto then a bus to the Duomo. As the bus came out of a narrow alleyway onto the Piazza del Duomo .... all of a sudden .... holy crap! I actually said that out loud! I've seen nicer duomos, but this one appeared quite out of the blue as we had been driving through windy, tight little alleys - hence the reaction. The interior was pretty disappointing. I also found the exterior to be a little comical - the stripes looked like a prison uniform, to ... read more

TA here - FINALLY. Seems my timing with the internet cafes has been as futile as my timing with the Italian siestas. If you are hungry anytime between 1 - 4, then forget it! These people have something going on here...they know when to get OUT OF THE HEAT! Today I am writing from Orvietto...an incredibly beautiful town perched atop a rock outcropping, accessible by a funky cable car that takes you straight uphill. Debe and I took a short side trip today into the town of Civita di Bagnoregio. This town has a population of 14. We had to hike up a bridge across a canyon to access the town, but it was well worth it. No one spoke any English. We had the best truffle bruschetta EVER and the owner made his own wine ... read more

Just off the autostrada, Orvieto is no secret, but worth the visit. Here you'll see the Cathedral, drink Classico wine and shop for ceramics. Also, a commanding view of the valley from the Fortress ruins.... read more
