Hi all, Not much to report today. Study, study, study Italian lanugage! I was supposed to have a tension-release and relaxing massage... but this is Italy. It was a man that came to my apartment. No massage table, no towels, just a tiny bottle of oil. 'I massage on the bed' he said. Ahaaaa? I just wanted shoulders and feet done. 'okay' he said. Face down on the bed with my top off, he started to rub my neck. Not very good, I thought. He moved to my back, then I heard groaning and loud panting, I wondered if he was just hot as it was a humid day... but no, I don't think it was just that. I figured if he didn't stop, I would get up off the bed and tell him to go. ... read more

Cooking Class, making Gnocchi Monday 4 June Class went well today, so my weekend study efforts paid off. Woo hoo! I joined some others from the school to attend a cooking class this evening. We made gnocchi (potato dumplings), from scratch. Never been a big fan of gnocchi, but they were very light and all the vegetables and sauces we prepared to go with them made them very tasty. The view from this restaurant is superb. See the photo of the hills through the greenery (the one where you can just see the top of San Biagio church peeping through), well this is from the restaurant – also the photo of the sunset is from the exact same position a little later in the evening. See also the photos of the old Estrucan church attached to ... read more

Study Day Sunday 3 June 2012 Still trying to get a grasp on maschile e feminile, essere e avere, singola e plural, etc., etc., etc! So I took to the books again today, as tomorrow I start my second (final) week, and I don’t want to begin it from a behind position… if you get my drift. Did a quick grocery shop and bought a pizza to take home for dinner. Mmmmm, mamma mia, delicious… and so cheap! One third of the price we pay in Australia and three times as good! The pastry is so light and the ingredients are so fresh. We Aussies would do well to take on board some of the Italian techniques in the pizza-making department. Well, back to the Italian lessons. Write soon. Please feel free to comment or contact ... read more

Saturday 2 June 2012 Catchup Day Even well laid plans can go astray. A school pal had arranged to hire a car today from a local garage, but it didn’t come off. I think they (the garage people) forgot about it and went off for the long weekend without remembering that a couple of students from the language school were going to rent their spare car. Not to worry, I took the opportunity to catch up on some study. It was good because I didn’t feel under pressure to get my homework done in the otherwise allocated short time. I came up for air this evening and met my class mate for a meal at one of the village restaurants. I had a steak and it was very good to have something other than pasta! It ... read more

Friday 1 June San Biagio After lessons today, I took a bus around the outskirts of town. I visited San Biagio Cathedral at the base of the hill outside the village walls. It’s the church shown in most photos and postcards of Montepulciano. It’s very old and very beautiful. Check bottom of each blog entry for more photos.... read more

Thursday, cont'd WineryTour After my privatelesson today I went on a wine tour. There are many wineries all over Tuscany and it would take more than three months to cover them all (and lots of headaches I suspect!). On this tour we visited just two; a small family-run business and a large corporate-style estate. The guide spoke English as did the other tour participants. It was a welcome change not to have to concentrate on every word being said! The scenery was magnificent, the tours were interesting and the wines were excellent. It was a lovely sunny day and not too hot… I really enjoyed myself and the company of my new-found friends from Ireland, England, Holland and Guatemala.... read more

Bombed Out! Wednesday 30 May Halfway through lessons on day three; I bombed out. I was utterly discombobulated and on the verge of tears. I left the class and met with the manager of the school. I needed to find a solution. I decided to pay the extra money and swap over to all private lessons where the tutor would do explanations in English. After this meeting, I took the rest of the day off. I needed to clear my head and get some fresh air and sunshine. With all my spare time taken up with study, I hadn’t had time to update my travel blog or communicate with family. I took a long walk outside the walls of the village to try and find a shop in in the residential shopping area that might have ... read more

Who sets the pace? Tuesday 29 May By day two, the pace had been set. The five other students in the class had either studied Italian before, or spoke similar languages such as Spanish. So, despite my attempt to study, I wasn’t keeping up. They were much too quick for me! After class I made an appointment for a private lesson to see if I could catch up. This would take place after class on Wednesday, day three.... read more

Monday 28 May First Day of School – Italian Language Lessons At il Sasso Language School I opted for classroom lessons of just for 4 hours per day (8.45 – 1.15, including breaks). This seems to be the norm, although some students also take private lessons during the afternoon. It really depends why you want/need to learn the language (work requirement or pleasure) and how quickly you want/need to learn. I’m taking lessons so that I can learn enough to get myself out of trouble when I’m travelling, and to know enough to be able to read documents when researching family history. By the end of the first day my head was swimming. Unlike the way languages are taught in Australia, with explanations in English, the method for classroom teaching at this school is no, absolutely ... read more

Saturday 27 May An alarm clock start today… up at five to be at Milano Stazione Centrale for my 7.15 train to Montepulciano. (Pronounced; Mon tepull charno, with the accent on the ar). After a five-hour train journey, and another two hours spent with country busses and transfers, I arrived at my place of residence for the next two weeks. One of the Il Sasso teachers (I’m here to learn some Italian… well the basics at least) met me and took me to my apartment, right across the road from my school… literally 20 metres away. The apartment is in a very old building, but the interior has been modernised and has everything I need for a comfortable stay. This town is thousands of years old, but I’ll go into more detail later. I’m ... read more
