I have fallen in love with the tiny Town of Certaldo ,. The medieval town is on a hill with a climb that caused all of us...even the young ones...to pause and catch our breath! The gelato was superb...perhaps the best we've had this trip. Lunch in a little hole-in-a-wall was wonderful...tried the local pasta -pici - with pecorino Romano cheese and pepper corns...delish!! A place of many weddings...at least 2 when we stopped by today ( twice in one day lol) and more we think. Bought lovely handmade Tuscan pottery pieces of course! ... read more

The train was suppose to be a very quick trip from Florence to Certaldo (the station we were getting off at), but of course, it was longer for us. We gathered our things as our train entered the Certaldo train station...standing by the doors waiting for them to open, the train stopped for maybe 30 seconds, then continued on without even opening the doors. We eventually stopped at some ho-dunk town in Tuscany and had to wait another HOUR before a train to Certaldo came. Of course, just our luck. Fattoria del Bassetto was our new home for two nights. In the heart of Tuscany, this “hostel” is in a tiny town called ... read more

The funicular goes from the piazza to the top of the hill where the old medieval town of Certaldo is. The ride was short, but saved our legs. The old town of Certaldo is surrounding by a city wall. From up here we had a great view of the surrounding hills and farms. We walked through the old town and came to the Pretorio Palace. In the palace there is a prison, one for men and one for women. It is a small palace. In some of the rooms the walls are decorated with frescoes. We caught the funicular back into the new ... read more

Geo: 43.2158, 11.7963For the next few nights I am staying at a hostel in a small Tuscan town that was recommended to me by a friend I met a month ago- thanks B! So this morning I said goodbye to Florence and caught the train to Certaldo. The hostel was doing a pick-up from the station in two hours, instead of waiting I decided to make my own way to the hostel. It was too far to walk, so in the piazza I asked someone who was working at the magazine stand for the taxi number, he called me the one and only taxi in the town- which his father operated. All was good and in 10 minutes I was at the hostel, which was an old villa. Part of it was a hostel and there ... read more
