As a bit of nostalgia we went up to Barga in the Carfangnana area north of Lucca, for the weekend. This is where Ian spent a month doing a colour etching course 20 years ago in 1998. I joined him half way through. It is a gorgeous little 10th Century mountaintop fortified village with a new town over a small gully. Lots of people here speak Italian with a Scottish accent as, after WW2 People from here went to Scotland to work, especially in the shipyards. Now later generations are returning. Getting there and back was a bit of a mission, bus up and train down but I won’t bore you with the details. Another sunny day and plans were made to take a train to Barga and explore the “most Scottish town in Italy” (apparently many Italian migrants to Scotland returned to Italy when the Italian economy improved and a large number resettled in Barga). We calculated the cost of taking public transport and this resulted in a search for a cheap car rental in Lucca. Jon found a bargain-priced 4 day rental of a near new Lancia Ypsilon and off we went to Barga. We found a hospitable café owner who was happy to provide us with lunch even though it was after 2pm! Spring in Italy - what does it conjure up? Warm weather, sunshine, light showers and wild flowers everywhere. What did we get today - heavy rain as the Heavens opened. Rain falling like stair rods splashing in the deep puddles. There is a welsh saying about heavy rain - it sounds like old ladies with their sticks and this summed up the noise of the rain falling. Thunder claps filled the air and forks of lightening lightened up the sky. We knew that this part of the Garfagnana was dominated by hills and lush vegetation - none of which we saw due to the thick mist which enveloped everywhere.
