We had a fairly early morning, starting out by walking to the Maserati Factory. This tour was actually easy to get tickets to, and I highly recommend it. The tour goes thru every stage of the production, in this case the M20, a beautiful sports car. Both Dale and I could see ourselves driving this car. I think we need a larger garage though and lots more storms will help with the money. The tour starts in the show room, then you walk to the old, original buildings in the back. The exterior of the buildings cannot be changed but the interiors have been refurbished to make way for modernization. There are pathways that go up and down the areas so that you can see the vehicle in the various stages, from a frame to the ... read more

Now for the very serious business of the cars. There are 2 Ferrari museums; one in Modena and one in Maranello. I’d gotten tickets to the Maranello museum so that we could try to get into the factory as we can get in free as Ferrari owners. We hopped in a cab and got to Maranello; we had the driver leave us off at the factory. Dale was so impressed as there is a driveway that is in many photos and there he was, walking on the driveway. We asked about going into the factory and were told we had to ask at the museum so we walked there. As it turns out, we could not take the boys into the factory as there is an age limit of 16. We were disappointed but at least ... read more

My idea was to travel to a nearby town one day and home the next, so that we were not just running from place to place. So having spent a day in Venice, it was time to spend a day in Verona. We loved the nearby Piazza Erbe, translated to Square of Herbs. We read that herb shops were around the square but I did not see any. There were, however, lots of restaurants, coffee and gelato shops and shops with shoes and clothing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piazza_delle_Erbe,_Verona At the Piazza Erbe we found a very nice iced cappuccino and Zaya found her gelato so that we were all happy. We sat watching the people go back and forth. Just a few feet off of the Piazza is the Juliette House (of Romeo and Juliette). This was thought up ... read more

Une journée de plus de notre voyage qui s'achève, eh la la! Mais on n'a pas l'impression que ça a passé trop vite, donc c'est OK. Aujourd'hui, on a visité 2 autres villes. Vive le train! On va officiellement pouvoir dire : Émilie-Romagne, check!

DAY 15 - Thursday Another all day tour focusing on Bologna and Modena. A couple of people in the group decided to skip today. Cindy has food poisoning, she went out for dinner and was craving vegetables, ate a bunch of spinach and it made her very sick. She should have eaten that glutenous pizza instead... The other person, Vince, said "his throat is scratchy" but we think he's fine. He's had the hardest time getting along with everyone, he's very bossy, loud and tends to "know everything". He probably was tired of everyone calling him out and getting mad at him. He'll enjoy the break. It's cold and raining pretty hard, adding to the fatigue of the group. Everyone is in pretty good spirits considering, but it's apparent that trip is almost over and niceties ... read more

Where is the world is Suzy Sundance ? She is parked up in a motorcaravan club sosta in the town of Modena. After another relatively peaceful night on the sosta only disturbed by the gentle trundle of the train, a lorry driver running his engine and a family with three year old in tow . She played football on the empty car park until the witching hour . Had she been mine she would be long gone to the land of nod. And we did what we never do which is set our van alarm off waking us but the rest of the town slumbered and did not bat an eyelid. Today was going to be Parma day. Parma Violets those lovely dragees that smell of perfume, taste like perfume and are pure perfume. Beloved of ... read more

After sleeping well from an evening of eating and drinking we woke early and had a breakfast of cooked prosciutto, bread, fruit with a few double espressos. Ernesto and Ginetta came by to see us off. Son Patrick came from his house around the mountain and brought his baby boy Filipo with him. Family and all the people up here are very friendly and life is enjoyed at a more relaxed pace than in the big cities. Artemio and Mirella were great hosts. This area has many peaks that are a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and cyclists. There are clear mountain streams for fly fishing and alpine meadows to enjoy. We had to get to Molina across the valley and up and over another mountain. We descended from Arina using a partially paved back mountain road ... read more

Socialism: a family affair All I saw of Bologna as I motored on through its highways were the booted prostitutes on the street corner, wearing hot pants in the snow. When I reached Modena, my host Claudio told me they were mostly Romanians and Nigerians, who had settled into that particular market niche in Northern Italy. As he told me this, we watched hundreds of young and old Modenese parade through the streets in support of a communist agenda in the upcoming national elections. Swarms of impartial SWAT officers stood aloofly, observing the protest. Two beaming young girls rushed to a portable microphone, and led the chanting that accompanied the march. They smiled with great satisfaction as they venomously unleashed their harsh words of criticism against the sitting government. My host family Claudio and Cornelia are ... read more
