Hello all,
Have had a fairly busy last 3 days, it's really hard to believe that I've been gone almost 2 weeks! In some ways, it seems longer than that but at the same time it's gone very quickly, time is a hard thing to define...
Monday:
We had 3 new people join our class, one gal that we already knew and was here last week. A woman from Switzerland that will be here for a month, and another gal from Norway, I think she may have been here last week also though in another class. The teachers have all switched around also, so we have two new ones, they are quite nice also but speak to us in Italian more... Molto difficile! After class, I went for a long walk down the main road trying to burn off some gelato, pasta, and pizza calories but I think they decided to hang around anyway!
Met up with others in the class to go to the Limoncello factory, they grow their own lemons and make Limoncello ( a liquor), fantastic lemon marmalade, baba (a cake soaked in rum usually but they have it in the limoncello). I passed on all
but the marmalade, and it was wonderful, it was an interesting tour but since I don't drink alcohol was not as interesting as the class we had the next day... Something out of the usual, when we arrived were told we had to wait about an half hour as they were shooting an ad or interview for the travel channel, so we sat and watched them do several takes over and over, kind of fun to watch.
After this a couple of us went out, I had cioccolata calda (hot chocolate), just like a melted candy bar... Very good, wish you could get this in the states!
Tuesday:
Class again in the morning, I really do enjoy it and usually could do another hour or so. Though if I was in a more advanced class I don't think I would feel that way as I think if they didn't explain some things in English my head would just spin... After classes, the same bunch of us and a few more went to our next and one of the best "cultural" experiences yet, we met at a gelato factory and shop. Pics to follow... We were able to "make" lemon sorbet, and
hazelnut, they were very delicious, the owner is third generation and quite passionate about the whole thing, very insistent on using the best and freshest ingredients, etc... During the tourist season, which is nine months a year, they get started at 5 am and are there until 10 pm... 7 days a week! One of their machines cost 46,000 euros and they have several, so it's not a cheap business to run, they also buy whole milk, not powdered, etc.. She also gave us tips to know what good gelato and sorbet should be like when you are elsewhere.
1. Ask if the fruit 'ice cream' was made with milk (except for coconut and ...?) she says to say, "bye bye", if the answer is yes.
2. If the display of gelato is heaped up above the sides of the container, "run out of there", because it has a list of additives that are making it not melt...
After this, a few of us walked down the hill to Marina Piccolo and back, then went to a recommended restaurant for the pizza, I had a delicious mushroom one, brought half of it back and had it for lunch today.
ciao!
