Guy throwing Kleenex on windshields
They throw a new 6 pack of travel Kleenex on your windshield when you are stopped at a traffic light, if you don't want it they remove them when the light changes, didn't see any high pressure tactics... Geo: 40.6263, 14.3757
My very nice hostess brought me my tea, cornetto, and some small chocolate cookies "biscotti" to my room at 7:45 as she knew I was leaving at 8:30 to go to the meeting place for our walking tour of Naples this morning. Four of us arrive and meet our guide, some confusion and phone calls ensued, everything was worked out and we walked the 5 minutes to where our van driver was meeting us, a bit more confusion as he was told 9:30 but arrived early so we were off by 9:20 or so. It's about an hour to an hour and a quarter drive I think from Sorrento to Napoli, the guide was not very positive about the safety aspects of the city and wanted us to stay close all the time. It really didn't seem so bad... Gritty, dirty, big, definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but there are some things here worth a trip.
When we asked about what we would be doing it sounded like a little walk and a shopping trip for Christmas stuff... Our little group had a polite rebellion, none of us were here to shop, we want to see some interesting
This guy was a Dr.
He was beloved, died in the 1930's? Now sainted, this photo is above the alter of his chapel and now people pray to him, I found it sad... historical things, I was hoping to see the Cappella Sansevero with the "Veiled Christ" statue, no photos allowed, google it, it is IMPRESSIVE... The talent to do this! Just amazing...So it was decided we would go here, and we were all glad we did, interesting family history, the same family is still running this from the 1500's? Can't remember the dates....
First, we visited a church that was rebuilt after an earthquake but spared in WWII, the second church across the little alley/street was totally gutted by WWII bombs and rebuilt exactly as it was. After this, we visited the Cappella Sansevero. We then walked to a restaurant where I had an original Margherita pizza cooked in its birthplace! it was very good! This kind of pizza was named after the first queen, using the colors of the Italian flag, tomato sauce for the red, mozzarella for the white, and basil for the green.
After lunch, we walked over to the Umberto I Galleria, a covered "mall", shops, etc... Built ? When we left this a HUGE funeral procession drove and walked by, we heard it was a 16-year-old girl, so many young people, many crying, it was very somber and
sad.
We continued our walking tour, eventually meeting back up with our driver who drove us around and took us to a spot with great views for photos. We were back in Sorrento by 4:20. It really was nice to only have 4 in our group as the guide was able to be flexible with her planned schedule for us.
Our small group went to a little cafe for some water /caffe / tea and a visit, we then broke up and did our own thing. One of the other gals and I went to the train station to make sure there wasn't going to be a strike on Saturday as our guide was saying they do that all the time... I know they do but it really was unwarranted it seems.... Anyway we were assured no strike on Saturday, which is good as that is the day we go to Naples then onto Rome.
There was some sort of flea market right outside the entry to my building so I went and browsed, one of the more advanced students at the school told me what really helped her Italian was when she started reading books in Italian, I was
Chiesa Santa Chiara, was bombed in WWII
Totally gutted and rebuilt, originally built in the 1400's? thinking about following her advice and going to the bookstore here to look for something hopefully easy... ;-/. Anyway, I found a used Agatha Christie for one euro so got a bargain and hopefully it will help me along a bit...
An early night in to do my blogging then off to bed, school in the morning!
ciao

It sounds like you are having a good time. Why the protests and possible strike? Is this country wide or just in that city? We are looking forward to you getting back.Love,Tony
