Just been through the list and got all my gear in one spot. Doesn't look too bad but it's not complete yet. We got our travel docs and there's one small hiccup. A certain person has a middle name Jeremiah which appears as his first name for the Inca trail pass. Let's hope we don't get stopped!! Here's the route http://www.travelblog.org/gmaps/map_4Bg.html Our itinerary is as follows 28th Aug - overnight Madrid, flying out Lima on the 29th. 30th Aug, a feast day in Lima and we head off to the jungle Puerto Maldonado (how did that happen?) 2 days later we arrive in Cuzco to acclimatise for our big trek starting on the 3rd of September. Will AOD be allowed on? Assuming all ok we finish on the 7th and arrive back in Cuzco for a ... read more

Clare After Kerry I went up to County Clare, where my base was the town of Doolin. Clare is home to two things I’d really wanted to see in Ireland; the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren. On the bus up to Doolin we stopped for 15 minutes at the centre for the Cliffs of Moher. I couldn’t resist popping up to the cliffs for a quick preview, even though I was planning to spend a day there later. It was evening, so the light was fairly low and it was overcast, too, but the cliffs were quite stunning. I just stopped at the first viewpoint because I didn’t want to miss the bus. After Dingle, with it’s litter problem overshadowing the beautiful landscape, it was heaven to stand at the top of these gorgeous cliffs ... read more

Connemara I had originally planned to join Dirty Boots Treks for a three day hike in Connemara National Park but it was sadly cancelled due to lack of numbers. I didn’t want to miss out on the whole area though, so I headed to Clifden from Galway to spend a few days in the Connemara countryside. I didn’t do any wild hiking but it was still beautiful. On the bus from Galway I met a French girl called Benedicte who was planning to stay at the same hostel. When we got to Clifden we left our packs at the hostel and set off on foot along the Sky Road, a 15km loop track that takes in the coastline north-west of Clifden and includes Connemara Castle. It was a lovely walk and we were accompanied the whole ... read more

Our agenda today was simple - get to London. We were able to have another small sleep in, before catching our cab to Dublin airport, and finding the Aer Lingus desk. If you can organise them, E Tickets are definitely the way to go…the lines are much quicker! Unfortunately, we only have paper tickets, so we have to join the longer queues, but most of the time we’re there early, so it’s not a huge problem. Dublin airport is like a mini-shopping centre, so after one last look upstairs we found a seat and relaxed for 10 minutes before boarding our plane. The flight to London was great - only 50 minutes and we were there. Heathrow was no worries again and we were in and out in record time. Plus, we had a hotel transfer! ... read more

Ireland was the launching pad of our journey two months ago. Along with Lisa Pulido and her great friend, Missy, the four of us proceeded to drive on the wrong side of the road and create general mayhem wherever we went! We all have to give Missy tons of credit as she rocked the highways and became comfortable behind the wheel as the rest of us just closed our eyes and said "Great job, Missy!" Dublin was great, as advertised. Who couldn't use a pub every 5 meters? And yes, the Guiness IS different here compared to the states, and tastes like a chocolate shake! Before we met up with Lisa (we met up with her after she attended a friend's wedding), KT, Missy & I spent the night in Birr, in south-central Ireland. We stumbled ... read more

Ireland…. Alrighty then, So we picked up the car and it seriously took us forever to get out of the city like an hour to and hour and a half its seriously ridiculous!!! But yeah we got out and headed up the motor ways which was quite boring nd I slept through most of it and then we came to Wales….it’s like someone picked up the Zimbabwe country side and moved it to the UK. It’s really quite awesome none of my pictures do even the slightest amount of justice, so I took a lil bit of video of the winding roads and just how small the lanes actually are and how close the foliage is to the road. Was just absolutely beautiful the only way to put it. So yeah in our travels through Wales ... read more

Cork To start my trip in Ireland I flew to Cork, there to stay with relatives (two of whom I’d met when they came on a trip to New Zealand). They lived in a big old house a few minutes walk from the city and it made a great base for my exploration of the area. Cork was a nice little city with lots of bridges and big wide roads due to the fact that it was built over a whole lot of islands separated by river channels. Many of the doors in the city are raised off street level and still have places where the canal boats used to tie up along the sides of the rivers. The fact that it’s built on natural river channels also made it almost impossible to navigate without a ... read more

With time to sleep in, we made sure we didn’t set the alarm till 8:30am this morning, and headed down to breakie just after nine. I love the little pork sausages here, and will miss them when we head out of the UK for a month and a bit. The full English/Irish/Scottish breakfast definitely sets you up for the day - if you can fit it all in! After breakie, we decided to walk to Trinity College - and were only disorientated for 10 minutes or so - we realised that we needed to cross the river in order to get to the college!! It was fun to walk down O’Connell street though, and get lost in Dublin City for a few minutes. Over the bridge, we got our bearings, and headed to the college. Luckily, ... read more
