We arose this Lord's day morning and spent about 30 minutes in worship -- just the two of us. It is unknown just how far the nearest meeting place of the church of Christ lies from where we are (probably well over 150 miles), so with some planning ahead, we were equipped with even the emblems of the Lord's supper (thanks to the Grahams!). We headed out to County Leitrim's capital city, Carrick-On-Shannon. The beautiful River Shannon meanders through this quaint little town known for its many noted boating activities. From there, it was on to the town of Sligo in County Sligo. This is a fairly large town with plenty to see and do. Irish poet, W.B. Yeats (a favorite son of Sligo), is featured prominently in this town. From there, we moved on to ... read more

So since I can't go to Celtic week in Swannanoa this year I took it upon myself to create my own celtic week and as luck would have it, one of the most popular music camp/schools in the same vein as our dear old Swannanoa Gathering is happening in Tubbercurry, Sligo all this week. I speak of none other than the South Sligo Summer School (or the Thouth Thligo Thummer Thcool, if you speak Daffy Duck). Tubbercurry is a charming little town that is ecstatic that all the musicians have flocked to its pubs and restaruants for a week. This music camp has a cult following. There is a team of South Carolinians who make the trek every year, a Cape Breton-"er"?, a few Japanese, plenty of English, Scottish, and Northern Irish. I took a fiddle ... read more

My alarm went off at 5:45am, I growled, turned it off, and forced myself to get up. I packed my things up in the dark and snuck out into a completely deserted Belfast. I walked to Victoria Station in Belfast only to find uot I needed to be at Central Station, 15 minutes walk. It was 6:30am and my train was 6:50am. I nearly ran and made it by 6:40am. This is when I'm thankful I'm only lugging around a 22lb backpack. Which is probably about 30 lbs now. I got to Dublin on a train that was so packed with suits that people were standing. It was raining out as we went past fields of sheep and countryside. It was very pretty. I arrived in Dublin at 9:30am and headed to the ticket window to ... read more

Out of all the towns I've visited in Ireland, Sligo was the one I most wanted to see and its proven to definately be my favourite.. Why? I do not know, there isnt much to see or do here but Im finding myself loving it.. My first night here, I just ate dinner in the comfort of my hotel, after a 10 hour train trip day and having to go all the way back to Dublin, to change stations not only trains! I wasnt in the mood to be doing much, however this proved to be lucky as I got talking to a Polish bartender here in my hotel who offered to show me the sights on Sligo! Yay for me! Proved to be an interesting day, particularly after I had to get up early after ... read more

Hey guys, Up in the north of Ireland now and have gone some distance since the last update. Finally getting sorted from the incident that happened with the wallet and other things, a emergency credit card has turned up so back on track. Hitched a ride to Galway from Ennis and it was actually a police man that gave me a lift. He remembered me from the station when getting the police report and other stuff so he was good enough to pull over and asked if I needed a lift, very good of him indeed. It was quite interesting spending an hour or so with a police guy cause he told me about all the problems that is going on around the place exp the gypsy people he said they are by far the ... read more

This morning started out in a much more relaxed fashion than yesterday. Tim and I had a cuppa tea and some brown bread while we chatted with Kitty. Alfie had already headed off to work since he was planning to take off early in the afternoon to meet us in County Sligo and point us to an old cemetery where some Taaffes are buried. After a nice shower (the Deehans have better water pressure than we found in many B & Bs), we loaded the car and left Athenry for points north. We stopped first to snap a few photos of the lovely Lough Talt, then found our way to a wide spot in the road called Mount Taaffe. We’re told that Mount Taaffe was once a thriving community, but now it mostly consists of a ... read more
