Tuesday. I had read that the short train trip from Cork to Cobh was scenic and worth doing, and since I like train rides, I had included it on my planned itinerary. So I drove back up to Cork in the morning to do this trip. Turned out to be a waste of four hours of the day – the trip follows the coast around, but it is nearly all industrial wasteland and warehouses. The train ride between Hornsby and Gosford is many times better. The worst aspect, though, is it meant that I was rushing for the rest of the day, and didn’t have the time to take things in. I had little idea of how much time it takes to drive anywhere here, the roads being winding and slow. Anyhow, after Cork I headed ... read more

This past weekend I traveled to Killarney and toured the Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula. The town of Killarney itself is a lovely town. The Ring of Kerry lived up to everything that people make it out to be. It is a beautiful landscape and will make people sit in awe at points. The big surprise of the trip was the Dingle Peninsula. It was the most beautiful place I have seen in Ireland. It is by far my favorite place and I could not begin to describe my thoughts on the peninsula. For anyone who is traveling to Ireland, I cannot recommend any place more highly. It is in my personal opinion that the Dingle Peninsula was quite a bit better than the Ring of Kerry and the Ring of Kerry left me speechless. ... read more

Let me start by saying today was a very long day. Along with that, today was the best day I've had yet on this trip. I began my drive of the Ring of Kerry this morning without a real itinerary, just a list of potential landmarks I could stop at if I felt like it. url=http://www.all-ireland.com/attractions/munster/kerry/gapofdunloe.htmhttp:/www.all-ireland.com/attractions/munster/kerry/gapofdunloe.htmGap of Dunloe wasn't on the list, but I turned off the highway when I saw the sign anyway, and made my way into the most beautiful and majestic place in the world, the Purple Mountains, MacGillyduccy's Reeks, and the Black Valley. After I stopped to photograph the Gap, my GPS said it was barely over an hour to the next city if I wanted to continue on the route I was currently on. So, instead of turning back the way ... read more

Today started off with another splendid breakfast. Eggs and tomahtoes. That reminds me, I expected nobody to know what tofu was (I'm not sure why, I guess my idea of "Bed and Breakfast" brings to mind lace and musty smelling houses with old people who are behind the times. To be fair, lace, must and old people have been present now at 2/3 of my B&Bs…so I don't feel I'm too off-base here) which is why I wasn't ready to make the transition to veganism until after the trip. I did see a health store in Limerick last night and stopped in to see what kind of things they'd have. It was super tiny, 2 aisles, with all kinds of fun things - types of things you'd find at Whole Foods, and it even had a ... read more

Geo: 52.0597, -9.50962Another quiet one today. I was up and packed reasonably early. I went down to breakfast, Patrick, the B&B owner cooks a traditional Irish breakfast. Toast, bacon, eggs and sausage. I've yet to make it all the way through it. Every morning here I've had different breakfast companions. I guess I'm the only one interested in seeing more than the Rock of Cashel. This morning there was a young German couple and and older american couple and me. We were quite the chatty bunch today. We sat and talked about our home countries, our travels, where we have been in Ireland and where we were going to. It was after 10 before we made a move and to be honest I don't think anyone wanted to move. We were quite settled. All good things ... read more

I had decided after looking at all the travel books on Ireland that we would be able to handle about a day of cows and sheep grazing on the rolling green fields. When I started reading about the the WILD ATLANTIC WAY I knew this is what we needed! This route is the world’s newest and longest defined coastal touring route…just 2500 km - we would actually driving at the edge of Europe (or as an Irish lad said) this would be the "last stop before New York" . We seem to get our adrenaline rush from those very very narrow roads - that have boarders of bushes which are instead of shoulders on the road. In simple terms - you are driving on the wrong side of the road with no room for error . ... read more

Oh My God ! What a beautiful and peaceful place is Killarney. Last month myself and my husband went to Killarney for a break. We went by our car and it gave us more liberty to get down at different places that we would like to see. From the starting of County Kerry itself was really stunning with mountains and green valleys which were brightened up by the sunshine. Through out our way we could see small small hills with white sheeps which appeared as small cotton balls moving around and eating green ,fresh grass. It was really enjoyable. Towards afternoon we reached Killarney and saw that it is a small , but very busy town with all the tourist from different places and countries moving around. Most of the hotels were located in the town ... read more

In a country where we quickly determined there was more scenic diversity than advertised we began our journey to the southwest and southern part of this fascinating land. Our trip was already two weeks old and we’d seen and experienced so much, it was almost difficult to imagine what we could find next that would match what we had already experienced. But we found it…..and more. Dingle First….a little background. When we were in Dublin at a pub called the Brazen Head for an evening of story telling and music (to be described in our future Dublin blog), we had the good fortune of striking up a conversation with Johnny, who was the storyteller. He was extremely proud of his land and when we told him we would be in Ireland for the better part of ... read more

Yesterday I spent my last morning in Cork. I had just enough time to walk downtown to St. FinBarre's cathedral before going back to catch my train to Killarney. All told, the train ride was relatively short, and when I got to Killarney it was raining. Hard. I had booked a hostel which was thankfully only a 3 minute walk from the train station. Upon ringing the doorbell, I was greeted by the host, Martin - a young guy with a mohawk and a thick Polish accent, not exactly what I expected to see in Ireland. The hostel itself is very cozy, with a woodstove and dim lighting in the main room - very rustic and good for relaxing. As of checking in time, I had my own 8-bed room to myself! The rain didn't discourage ... read more

If we were to travel directly to our next accommodation just outside Killarney we could be there in less than an hour. That would obviously be too easy and all we would be sightseeing would be farmland. So our plan for the day is to travel to the end of the Dingle Peninsula and back again and then onto our hotel, The 19thGreen. It would have been great to have been able to pull the curtains back this morning and seen the sun shining brightly but................. The reasonable day of weather we had yesterday has deserted us and there was rain hitting the bedroom window. We had given a breakfast time of 9am so we could enjoy a lie in and by delaying our departure as long as we could perhaps the rain would clear away. ... read more
