Hi, my big passion is wild animals and for as long as I remember, I'm passionated by nature. However, there is one type of animals I like above all: whales, and especially the humpback whale and the blue whale. Therefore, I decided in the winter of 2012 to finally go and search whales for myself. In the spring of 2012 , I therefore booked a short trip to Reykjavik Iceland, from the 29 june 2012 untill the 2 july 2012. Both of my parents wanted to come with me and so be it. Friday 29 june 2012, after my last exam in my second year at the Catholic University of Leuven, our plane ( a boeiing 757) took off to Kevlakik, Iceland's international airport. There's a different timezone in Iceland compared to Belgium, and so we landed ... read more

The tours of the summer 2012 that stand out in my mind are the Canadian several. One group in June, the family from Utah in July as well as a family from Washington (only 3 people) in July/August, the couple from USA in August and then the school group from Lancaster University in September. One group after the other. Between those tours I had day-tours with mostly people from cruise ships. Simply a wonderful experience to be able to see all those people and be with them, even if it were only for a day. The group of 16 in June was such a happy lot. We (my husband and I) took them to the westfjords to start with, then over to the northern part. They were here for 13 days. So enjoyable to have them, ... read more

· Like any metropolitan city Reykjavik has its share of graffiti. Some of the graffiti definitely makes an economic statement and warns of greed. Profound considering the economic crash that occurred in Iceland in 2008, making Iceland one of the hardest hit countries in the world. · On one of the main streets there is a DJ that plays music throughout the day, allot of dance music, rap, etc. There is a lot of political statements stated as well but the ones I witnessed were not related to Icelandic politics – more world politics. · There appears to be a worldly awareness and promotion of free speech here. I was also interested to find out that Iceland is one of the havens for journalists and one of its parliament members is closely tied to Wikileaks. Iceland ... read more

In Love With Iceland A seven hour flight and a seven hour time change brought us from Vancouver Island to this beautiful country. What a thrill to make this trip with some of my family and at least 3 generations. The only thing missing are the other family members who I know would love this country. Instantly the feeling is of community. Also the desserts are fantastic so there won't be much losing weight during our visit here no matter how far we walk. The only foreign feeling I sense is the language and most everyone we meet speaks English too. I think a lot of the locals are quite surprised when we don't answer back in their language as our four heads bobbing down the street look like they belong here. The people are so ... read more

When in Rome do as the Romans do, when in Iceland try and absorb the immense natural beauty of the diverse landscape. There is truly so much to take in and a week just is not enough to cover it all. What we covered was: · Blue Lagoon: This is a wonderful place to visit and to just relax. It’s an outdoor spa about 35 minutes away from Reykjavik. The natural warm waters in Blue Lagoon are a refreshing contrast to the cool outside air. The water has natural healing abilities and you can also use some of the free silica mud for your face and skin. They also offer a swim up bar in the facilities and the restaurant and café offer excellent food. · Thingvellir (Althing) National Park: Visiting this ... read more

Well you can find pretty much anything food wise in Iceland, whether it be Italian, Nepalese, etc. Personally when I’m travelling I like to have as much of an ‘authentic’ experience as I can and that was one advantage of staying in a Apartment/Hotel where we can get local food from the grocery store and try it out. In Iceland you’ll find allot of organic food simply made. You’ll also find a lot of food based around seafood, lamb, open flat bread sandwiches. I tried fish stew when I was there and loved it! I also tried Haggis (not the biggest fan but it was edible, the texture I had a bit of difficulty with). Finally, I also tried Hákarl. So what is Hákarl? Picture this, shark meat buried in the ground for 3 months. Dug ... read more

I like to get lost and find my way back again. I do this on purpose when I travel because I like to see what I stumble across. I like to see the streets that are no on the beaten track, I like to see where the locals go and soak it all in. I imagine what it would be like to live in that place and to call it home. What would I love about it and what would I not like. Usually I do not blend into most places and I am an obvious outsider, for many reasons I stand out but not here. That said, sometimes the idea of a place that you have in your head usually does not match reality. I expected more tall blondes like me. I saw some, but ... read more

There are certain times in life where you find religion. I have always been fascinated by religion but personally am not religious and lean more on the spiritual side (mind you there was that bad stint in my teens where I was a bit of a zealous born again). Needless to say there are times you reach out and give thanks to the powers that be and this I my time now….Dear Lord - thank you for the gift of GPS. Icelandic is not an easy language, actually it’s one of the most difficult languages to learn. On top of that, Iceland is such an isolated country, with such few people, it is very difficult to even have a lot of exposure to it. I know my basics of the language, and obviously most signage in ... read more

We opted for an Apartment Hotel. As a family of four covering three generations we figured it would be a good call and I have to say we were on the mark. We have a section of the room separated off and the decoration has a Nordic Modern feel with a Kitchen. We are located on Laugavegurstreet which is the main shopping street in Reykjavik and we are within walking distance of many of the major city attractions and of course shopping. The street only has room for one car so it is one way and literally back to back cars driving at peak times. When we first arrived it was a Saturday and it looked like the street just threw up a bunch of Icelanders, foreigners and cars everywhere and they were all buzzing around ... read more

I have finally made it….well to Iceland at least. The joy of this part of my journey is that I am with my 18 year old son, my mom and my aunt. With my family I am discovering a piece of my heritage and a little hesitant that the stories of my heritage may not be as glorious as the stories that I may have made up over time for myself. We arrived and the first thing of note is that the people of Iceland are very kind. Icelanders are very friendly. I have gone into countries with high expectations and have become very disappointed, so despite my love of this country I did come a bit guarded on what I would really experience (I will talk about Italy next week as it will be my ... read more
