3:15 AM- Good Friday- It feels as though I just blinked as I am gently tousled awake by the sound of Del Barber. Dennie and I drag ourselves from bed, crawl into a cab, and make our way to the airport where she is going to spend 10 days with Friends in Nelson, BC and where I am meeting 31 students to begin a 12 day tour of the capitals of Scandinavia - Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallin then back just in time for mid term exams. The EF tours itinerary is ambitious, and will require patience, but the nervous smiles from parents and energy in the air at 3:45 AM at YQR reaffirms my decision to take a big group of students with me to Northern Europe. 7AM- Reyjavik, Iceland- I believe it's Saturday!?- After ... read more

Icelandair flies into Keflavik International Airport. The airport is about 45 minutes away from Reykjavik by bus. When I arrived at 6:30 AM (2:30 AM by my biological clock) I had no local money and only a vague sense of where I needed to go. The passport check and customs was a joke. I am not sure if the boarder officer even looked at my passport, instead just passing it through his scanner and asking me when I planned on leaving. Customs appeared voluntary and I just walked through the “nothing to declare” line without so much as filling out a statement or anything. There wasn’t even a guard that I could see, although there were several cameras. This is not what I expected. As soon as I left the duty free area (turns out that ... read more

Goodness! Are we still talking about that eruption in 2010, Eyjafjallajokull? Even now that we are expecting Hekla to erupt? Hekla is never so serious as the one 3 years ago so no worries. However, yes, we are still talking about that eruption in 2010. So many people got stuck in Europe because of that and some even got to know each other because of that. I’ll tell you a story. A young woman lives in Canada and a young man in England. They need to be in contact because of their work, send e-mails, talk on the phone, but have never met even if they have worked together like that for some time. She went on a holiday to Asia and at the same time he went to Canada, holiday or not, doesn’t matter. The ... read more

What a fantastic place to visit. Although when travelling from the airport the scenery looks quite grim, when arriving to the main town of Reykjavik the views are fabulous. There are some amazing volcanic hikes to do and many tours to take. We chose to go whale watching but didn't spot any whales or any fish for that matter! Wherever you go staff cannot do enough to help you. in March time the temperature mirrored that of the UK and was a consistent 3 deg. The Golden Circle tour is well worth it as there are some fantastic views and the Geysir spouting hot springs are fantastic to see. We chose to do this tour on our own rather than with a group which gave us more flexibility. The Blue Lagoon is another great place to ... read more

I am a lucky traveller - spending just 5 days in Iceland - I got 5 sunny days. Different sources quote different statistics - but all of them agree that there are just a few days/weeks with clear sky per year. I share few shots of this amazing country - its pristine nature and amazing views.... read more

Snow + candy + hot dogs + beautiful snowy mountains + amazing architecture and design everywhere + pickled fish + kind people = one amazing trip to Iceland. There wasn’t one big event, one huge tour, one main sight that made me love Iceland – it was all of it smooshed together that created an amazing experience – one that I hope to repeat as soon as possible. We landed, took a bus to the hostel and then sat there at about 8:30am in the dark of night staring at the ground in a jet-lagged haze wondering what to do until we could check-in at 2pm. Not being afraid of the dark and not wanting to waste any of the four days we had in Iceland, we layered as much as possible while slightly feeling like ... read more

Day 1: Greater Area Reykjavik Sightseeing. After waiting a mere hour & half, the tour company (which forgot our reservation) arrived to drive us to the City tour in order to "visit some of Reykjavik's most remarkable sites!" (Per tour description). The “remarkable sites” include the local hospital and public school buildings, both grade schools and junior colleges. Leif Erickson did not attend school here; No one famous graduated here, George Washington did not sleep there. So, I am at a loss as to why these are on the tour. We waited patiently while the guide took two phone calls from his teenage daughters, and picked up and dropped off his friend. My favorite "site" was the house of a relative of some politician who parks her car in the red zone of fire ... read more

We rose and after a quick breaky, we wandered into town to do our staple souvenir shopping for (1) an Iceland shotglass and (2) a postcode that jumps out at Rach. We were a little early for the shops to be open so we got a drink from “Te & Kaffi”, I used my extensive Finnish language skills to determine that this was where Icelanders bought their teas and coffees from…they made a pretty good skinny latte too. After sipping on our coffees and finding the ‘right’ postcard, we realised we were running slightly late for our hotel pick for our geysers & waterfall tour! So we scampered back quick smart and just made the bus in time. We commenced our tour out of Reykjavic and within a couple of minutes the snow started. The landscape ... read more

Ah we had the best sleep last night! We woke up to our alarm at 9.30am and we were both dead to the world cos it was so pitch black outside!! We had a quick breakie downstairs cos the horses were awaiting our arrival! They picked us up at 10am for our Icelandic horse riding expedition but it was absolutely pitch black and made it feel like it was about 3.30am and we just wanted to go back to bed! They drove us about an hour to Islenski Hesturinn horse riding where we met the loveliest couple! After teaching us about the little Icelandic horses and how they are so disease free they don't even need to have jobs over here in Iceland. But as soon as they leave the country for a race or anything ... read more

Off to Iceland for the weekend!! We decided obviously it wasn't cold enough in Edinburgh - Let's crank it up a notch!! We were pretty excited and had booked a few tours etc through Iceland Air and got areally good deal on flights and hotel - £300! Which we were stoked about as we had both heard it was crazy expensive! So the weekend before we went out shopping for winter woolies. I bough a ridiculous new hat with ear flaps and gloves that were much too big my hands got lost in them, and Ben got a new beanie and gloves also! We were ready to go! We landed in Iceland and we were surprised to see it actually wasn't much colder than in Edinburgh but grey and wet which wasn't that nice. We landed ... read more
