Ever since I was a little girl I have associated myself as being Icelandic. Yes it is my heritage, but I was born and raised in Canada and I am also proud of being Canadian. For some reason though, I have always gravitated towards my heritage and identified with it more than I did with anything that was around me. Perhaps because it was so different and the other kids in school were decedents from people who emigrated from the UK, France, Germany or India. I loved the fact that I was unique in that way and I also preferred my Icelandic name to my Canadian name. My mother was going to give me the Icelandic name as my first name but her mind was changed because she was concerned that people would have difficulty to ... read more

Travel tip # 32:Iceland is a whole lot bigger than you can imagine, so get smart fast and plan more time than you think you need. In the 14 days or so that we have been here, we really have only scratched the surface on all there is to see and do. As we now sadly bid farewell to Iceland, we can say we have enjoyed our time here. No, wait a minute, strike that…… we have been witness to great natural wonders and wonderful experiences that will last a lifetime. We will surely miss the days that allowed us to see twenty or more new waterfalls in a few hours or the day that we saw ten rainbows in just one day. We have used up all the adjective possible to describe what we have ... read more

One of the many things we have observed to this point is that there does not appear to be many trees here. The relative youth of the nation geologically precludes their growth. To this point, our guide asked if we knew what to do if we got lost in an Icelandic forest. After a few seconds of thought on our part, she told us “you stand up!” Okay then…. Visitors to Iceland usually attempt one or both of the familiar routes when exploring this unique land. One is the Golden Circle, which can be seen in one day or the Ring Road, which we’re told can be done in as little as five days (although that is certainly rushing it). This will normally satisfy the average traveler and they are able to return home safe in ... read more

On August 22 we drove around a peninsula in the north today visiting a VERY old church, seeing the Iceland Emigration museum, and then seeing the Aukeryeri Cathedral. The old church, Holar, was originally a Catholic Bishopric from 1061. In the mid-1500's the last Catholic was replaced by the Lutheran/Episcopal Bishop. In other words, this location has been the heart of the Icelandic Cee since 1061.... The church was rehabilitated in the 1990's but was kept as true to the original as possible with the several bishops' tombs in the floor of the alter area. There is a museum in a northern Iceland town that details the l800's emigration of several thousand Icelanders to the US and Canada. In fact one of the stories was about a woman that ended up in Point Roberts and Bellingham... ... read more

We have been researching and reading books, hunting for exciting things to do and places to stay and trying to fit it all in...so far we have done amazing...we will be covering a lot of ground...literally.... This truly will be a journey that we will never forget. It is so amazing how much there is still to do and only a few more arrangements to make. Good Afternoon from Iceland. We are sitting in the kitchen of an older farm house (Solvanes farm) that is 21 km south of Varmahlid, the last 6 km on a gravel road. There is a river running through the back yard with a small bridge. Today has been an adventure. We left the hostel this morning and headed north on the ring road (Highway 1). To be honest the weather isn't great... pretty foggy in parts this morning but some sun this afternoon. As we went along we stopped for a few photo ops. We saw three separate waterfalls just peeking through the hills. We were so impressed with the hills we stopped and low and behold as we stopped there was a waterfall in our sights... I have included one of those shots here. After ... read more

We made it to Borgarnes yesterday after landing at Keflavik airport and renting a used car... Gary found a company that rents used cars. The one we have been assigned is a 10+ year old Nissan. It will definitely do the trip and costs about 1/2 of a regular rental car. On the way here we saw some great scenery especially as we went around Hvalfjordur with one way bridges and almost no traffic. The folks that are out and about are mostly interested in the beauty and probably taking a few hikes. We arrived in Borgarnes, found our hostel and did some exploring. We found a great little museum, The Settlement Center, that discusses the settlement of Iceland. It had an audio guide that walked you through the various small rooms. But by then jet ... read more

Iceland Segment - Aug. 14 to 19 Tues. Getting to Iceland was a very smooth trip except for one slight problem I caused. We left home at 8:30 am and drove to Bellevue Square and had lunch at PF Chang’s, drove to Holiday Inn in Renton, parked the car and shuttles to the airport around 12:30. Tickets, security all okay with no major line-ups. Ross sat and edited while I cruised the shops and got a coffee. I also bought 2 espresso truffles and put them in my pocket as my hands were full. Met up with Rusty and Orlis and boarded on time. Ross and I had aisle seats across from each other. Icelandic Air does not serve food as part of the package – you have to buy it. Not ... read more

One of the first things you need to know is that when you visit this land during the days of seemingly unlimited daylight is that there is in fact very little ice to be seen unless you look up at the mountains and glaciers. At least for us here in the southwestern part of the country that is the case. Not that this is or could possibly be any kind of problem. The main reason is that Iceland is a geothermal delight and they make great use of all this natural gaseous supply to heat and light almost the entire land. tells us that anytime you see “reyk” as part of any name is an indication there is natural geothermal steam about. Look at enough geyers, mudpots, and thermal springs and the next thing you know ... read more

Il y ... read more
