Let's start by saying I slept from 8:30pm-12:15am, took a little break from sleeping, then 1am-10am. I think I'm well caught up from the other night now lol. I decided to bus into town and save the 40 minute walk once I did set out - good thing too I guess, it was colder today. I started at Tjornin - it's a little lake in the middle of the city that is overrun (in a picturesque way) by geese, ducks and swans during the summer. I was curious what it would look like now. Well, I guess unsurprisingly the lake is frozen - it was weird taking pictures because it was around 11:30am and there was the "sunrise" behind me. It was fun people watching for a bit - a lot of little kids playing hockey, ... read more

Surprise! I'm in Iceland! Not surprised? Yeah, ok I guess not much of a surprise... although it's my first time during winter, so this will be new. I flew WOW for the first time - it was clean, it was as comfortable as any other carriers (except be aware there are no TVs/movies so bring your own entertainment!). I like the quirks they offer - everything is purple and everything has little sayings on it. (Ex: my headrest said "Hi! I'm your seat!" ; the drink cart said: "They see me rolling...") I had no problems, but we sat on the tarmac FOREVER in MTL, so a lot of people around me were pretty freaked out about making connections. I'm going to wager they all made their connections, but that their bags did not. Literally the ... read more

We are off again after a summer entirely in the U.S. This time Baby Bird is accompanying us to Iceland with Bird and HP moving on to Scotland, while sending Baby Bird to Denmark. I mean could you imagine spending more than five days with a Baby Bird! (yes Monster 1&2 you are mom free during that period and owe us) We will follow this brief trip with one next summer a bit longer to Scandinavia and beyond (stay tuned for details). Our (well, at least the author's) primary goal this trip is the Northern Lights. Yes, of course, during the day additional activities are in the offing. First days are about the Reykjanes Peninsula, Golden Circle and the south, followed by a couple of days out in the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, and finally a day driving ... read more

Dear Blog Readers, I knew three things about Iceland before visiting: 1. It's bloody expensive 2. It has an unpronounceable volcano that exploded in 2010 meaning we 'annoyingly' had to extend our stay in the south of France by two weeks on holiday 3. Their football team puts ours to shame So I suppose it was time to find out more about this place. The flights were cheap (£200 for both of us) but forgot about getting a checked bag included...there gone £50. Number 1 above already coming to fruition. We landed in Keflavik just before midnight and found our hire car place (Green Motion) and soon settled into our Ford Fiesta which would become our second home for the next few days. Just outside the capital city, Reykjavik, sat our hotel (Kieunes) which we managed ... read more

So, off we go to Iceland! Three generations of the Schatz family; Abi & Phillippa (AKA Granny & Grandpa), Ben & Gilat, and Tamar and Ethan. We got through the Ben Gurion airport smoothly and onto our gloriously purple WOW Airline to Keflavik. The plane was barely half full, so we could stretch out. Here's hoping it'll be like that on the return trip! The flight was uneventful, if long, and we were all excited to land in Iceland. We went through extremely rigorous security, much more than in Ben Gurion before the flight. Reason unknown. Eventually, after a surprizingly long hike, we got out of the airport. Our shuttle driver was waiting for us and took us to the Lagoon car rental office. Our Kia Sorento was all prepared and waiting for us. We packed ... read more

This entry needs a little background……in 2012 we were fortunate enough to spend more than two weeks in Iceland. Iceland is an amazing country that offers lava fields, glaciers, waterfalls, hot springs, tundra and all sorts of geological wonders. We think of it with fond, fond memories and dreamed of going back. It is a truly an incredibly unique spot in the world and frankly….there is no other place quite like it. When sitting with friends who ask what is our favorite country we visited, Iceland is one of the countries at the top of our list. Family and friends often ask why we don’t return to some of these wonderful locations that we have experienced and told them about…. our standard answer has been…… there is a big world out there and we want to ... read more

Our quick but beautiful layover in Iceland. We rented a car and travelled to Reykjavik where we found the most delicious croissant and espresso to be found anywhere at Braud and co. So delicious! We then drove through lava fields and moss covered craggy rocks and steaming geysers to find the lost lagoon. Hot springs in a farm field with cool rain. Please go here if you ever get a chance. So beautiful. Beautiful country and people. 48+ hours awake is tough, tough, tough, but so worth it.... read more

This all started as one of us was sitting in school last year and said casually, "This kind of thing would never happen in Finland." It was a small comment, but it had a life of its own. Fast-forward 6 months and here we are: Sam, Jennifer, Kat and Lyn - 4 American girls - off on an adventure well beyond Finland. We start with Iceland on July 16th and then continue to Helisnki, Tallin, Stockholm, Bergen, Voss, Flam and Oslo. We'll keep you informed with photos and chatter as we travel lightly and laugh constantly. We will be quite the team. Keep an eye out!... read more

If your reason for choosing Iceland is low airfare, you're going to have to channel some dark comedy to endure the inescapable high costs of Reykjavik. Hostel bed in an 8-bunk dorm: $80. Fish and chips at a roadside stand: $17. A beer at a regular bar: $12. Deliciously free and limitless spring water only somewhat makes up for this. Other, non-cost oriented observations: The Vesturbaejalaug Baths are a wonderful alternative to The Blue Lagoon. There's not much ambience, but they're quite clean and offer hot and cold pools, plus a sauna, steam room, and small gym, all for $10. This is one of the best baths I've ever been to - on par with some in Costa Rica, Japan, and Hungary that I've visited. The restaurant Svarta Kaffið is ingenious. All they serve is one ... read more

Also nochmals zur Blauen Lagune.
