Day 2 in Iceland along the SE Coast We woke to a day which was overcast but some sun was shining on the glacier. There was the occasional shower of rain through the day. First we drove along the south-east coast to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where large icebergs float around. We chose to go on an hour's zodiac cruise on the lagoon. We had half an hour to wait for the trip so ducked into the little cafe and had some mushroom soup - beautiful as it was very cold outside and very light rain. To go on the zodiac, we were kitted out with waterproof overalls in which we felt like sumo wrestlers but was very warm out in the speed boat with them on. It was amazing to see all the different shapes and ... read more

Iceland is like an amusement park, by which I mean, it's just one exhilaration after another. Unlike many places where the tourist destinations end up disappointing you, or are so mobbed with people that it takes all the magic away, Iceland's sights can't disappoint, and their majesty cannot be lessened even by crowds of tour buses. On our final full day, we drove all the way to Vik, stopping at several cool places along the way. Our first stop was a friendly bakery in Hverdagerdi (forgive me, but I don't want to stop to insert the Ð all the time or the Þ). Then we drove all the way to the Saga Centre, where I was in heaven, remembering the story of Njal's Saga. On the way, I read the first section of Njal's Saga out ... read more

I had to get up incredibly early because I'd booked a tour to the south part of the island at a glacier called Solheimajokull, about two hours away from Reykjavik by bus. We would be doing some trekking through this ancient frozen ice and some ice climbing as well. I got picked up at my hostel and then to the main bus station. From there we set out with our guide Oscar and four others who would be making up the group. As I expected, we were greeted with beautiful scenery along the way. We stopped near the glacier to pick up some supplies and once there Oscar pulled out all the equipment we would be using and we walked towards the towering mounds of snow and ice. Being that it was already May and the ... read more

To the South and it's Pouring! Today's adventure started at 9am, sightseeing and touring around the south shore of Iceland. An hour and a half from Reykjavík, our first stop was the Skógafoss waterfall. Huge and stunning with a massive spray, neither of us have ever seen a waterfall so big. It is 82 feet wide and has a 200 foot drop. The skies are grey, lots of rain and wind, low clouds with seabirds flying high and roosting in the cliffs. A great first stop! We realized after our first stop that we were going to be totally wet all day. Torrential arctic sheets of freezing rain that soaks you to the bone in 30 seconds mixed with 30 mph winds made for a complicated sightseeing tour. Our next stop was a black sand beach ... read more

We woke up "early" this morning to enjoy a tasty breakfast on the farm! After a quick shower (literally - the water couldn't decide d it was hr or cold and had that sulfury smell), we headed towards Geysir. Geysir is actually a cluster of little geysers including one that erupts every 5 minutes! We witnessed one eruption up close - it was spectacular! After Geysir we headed for Gullfoss, Icelanda largest waterfall. It did not disappoint! Although the wind was howling and the walkway was solid ice, we managed to get a great view. It is a major tourist destination though, so when the tour buses started lining up, we got out if there! We decided it was time to make our way to Reykjavik, since we had to turn the rental car in by ... read more

We woke up today to a drizzly rain and almost no visibility! But, why would that stop us from going on our adventure?! Our first stop for the day was planned to be a little place called Dulhaoney (sp?) that has a really neat rock formation on the beach. Our visit there was abruptly halted, however, when we realized we were going to have to cross an ocean inlet to get there! No thank you! We couldn't really see the formation anyway, so we moved on. Our next stop was down a gravely bumpy road to a "point of interest" on the map - which was a short walking oath to view a glacier. It was pretty rainy, so we didn't spend much time before getting back in the car and continuing on. We stopped next ... read more

We had a little bit late of a start today since we decided to make up a little bit of sleep! Our destination for the day was Jokulsarlon, a little place about 200 km from our hotel in Vik. After grabbing a delicious breakfast (aka juice boxes and a box of cookies) at the gas station, we hit the road! On our way we passed some gorgeous scenery: a few waterfalls, black sand rocky fields, glaciers and mountains. Everything is just beautiful. The weather today was great, sunshine the whole day!! We made it to Jokulsarlon in the early afternoon, and it was well worth the drive! We first stopped at a little pull-off and hiked over a hill to view the icebergs backdropped by the Vatnajokull glacier. We were busy taking pictures when we heard ... read more

We made it! We arrived this morning right On time at 6:30 am local time. We breezed through customs, grabbed a quick breakfast, got our rental car and hit the road... almost! Our rental only had a quarter tank so we stopped to fill up (They don't have the bring it back full rules here). But when we got to the gas station, we couldn't figure out how to open the gas thing! Long story short, we ended up back at the car rental place so they could show us how to do it (its an unmarked tiny lever on the drivers side floor). Finally we were on the road by about 8am. Our first stop was the Raufarholshellir ice caves (about a 45 min drive from the airport). Ernie discovered the caves during some research ... read more

"Why on earth would you go to Iceland in the middle of winter?", was usually the first thing out of anyone's mouth when I told them of our travel plans. Well, for one thing, it's about halfway between Europe and the US, so it makes a logical meeting point for Guillaume and I. Also, I've always wanted to go to Iceland, does the time of year really matter? Seeing the northern lights has always been on my bucket list, and there's no way to see them with summer's midnight sun, so why not see what 10 days in winter arctic conditions is really like? I landed in Reykjavic at about 7am local time, though it felt like midnight. The sun wouldn't be up for another three and a half hours. Snow was blowing in chilling gale-force ... read more
