We are continuing our around the island tour and heading west to Borgarfjorour. This is area was voted as one of the destinations bu Lonely Planet on 2016. First stop was Deildartunguhver Hot Springs, situated on a beautiful farm, it's the most powerful hot spring in Europe with a flow rate of 180 liters (50 gallons) of water per second at a piping hot 97°C (200°F). The scalding water rushes out of an algae covered rocky outcrop. We then visited the Historic settlement of Reykholt, the home of the former chieftain, politician, scholar, and author Snorri Sturluson (1178-1241). We went inside the 1887 charmingly restored church where I stood in the pulpit and delivered my Sunday morning sermon, lol. There is also a very handsome new church on the grounds with appealing lines. The Exhibit of ... read more

Today we have two choices…very short day or very long day. We decide on the former…I think we have time! Two days have been set aside for Reykjavik at the end of our trip…we suspect we’ll only need one and anyway, it’s easy to come back another time to see Reykjavik but I doubt we’ll be back to the fjords any time soon. We set off reasonably early. Icelanders do not seem to get going very early and it’s the best time to get a shower and a look in at the wash up area. It’s looking slightly duller today but not wet so that’s fine. We drive off the camp passing steaming water in the bay. Normally you couldn’t keep me out of the sea but here you might end up boiled if you are ... read more

Käytiin lähibaarissa oluella ja syötiin lautasellinen ruokaa.... read more

August 10, 2019 –Isafjördur, Iceland– Weather: 43°F/6°C, cloudy all day, rain in am, wind 15 mph, humidity 70° The port of call today is Isafjördur, Iceland which serves as the regional capital of the Westfjörd region. For centuries this port was a major center of commerce and trading for the fishing industry. While fishing is still a major economic force tourism is a growing feature for the future. The area boasts some of the oldest buildings in Iceland, including four wooden structures from the 18thcentury which avoided destruction from fires. Today’stour: Arctic Foxes and Avalanches took us first on a drive along the coast of the fiord through the town of Súðavik, where in the 19thcentury the Norwegians established two whaling stations. The town was partially destroyed in the mid 1990’s by an avalanche; more about ... read more

What a day! I have truly loved Iceland, but the darkness is something that I would have to get used to. By the time I had packed my room, had a lovely breakfast and checked out, it was around 9:30. It was pitch black dark, cold and really windy. I headed out of town after refuelling and hoping that I wasn't going to have to cross the mountains... WRONG! The GPS took me left where I was hoping not to go... The wind had not stopped and as I started to climb the mountains the snow started; slowly at first and then heavier. By the time I was 10 klms into the journey, the road was already covered with snow. There were a few cars on the road so I tried to keep in their tyre ... read more

An early morning. I'm having trouble sleeping past 2 or 3am. Breakfast starts at 7:30 and with an Icelandic breakfast of bread, cheese and pastries I set off at about 10am. It was still pitch dark but I had quite a few places to visit and needed to get underway. The road took me out of the town I'm staying in ... name is I can't pronounce the name...Stykkisholmur. The sat nav with the coordinates has been amazing. Takes me to within a few metres of the places! Makes me feel much safer. The first place I visited was Budir Hamlet. It was a 73 klm drive from my accommodation. The road out of town was icy as I found out when I stopped to by fuel before leaving town. Luckily I had the car to ... read more

It was the May, 2018, VirtualTourist Euromeet which brought us back to Iceland thirty-five years after our first visit to this spectacular country in the North Atlantic Ocean. Unlike our first visit when we spent only a night or two thanks to Icelandair’s free stop over option, our time this visit lasted almost a week long though it was mostly confined to south Iceland. We had already been in country 4 days and with the official Euromeet activities over, some attendees like ourselves who were staying in country a bit longer decided to book a day trip to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula with Tröll Expeditions. Starting with an 8 am pickup, our much too compact minibus departed the cloudy environs of Reykjavik for a northwesterly route where as the skies became brighter, so did our mood. This ... read more

This edition brings us out of the Westfjords and into North Iceland. We will cover the trip from Pingeyri to Isafjordur, then down Isafjardardjup, across to Drangsnes. We will cover our first drive through a one way tunnel that has traffic both ways at the same time, our time in Isafjordur, the search for a sim and the camp at Drangsnes. Out of Pingeyri (it should be pointed out that the actual spelling of this town's name starts with an Icelandic 'thorn' - it looks like a p with a top as well as a tail; is pronounced as you would the Th in Thor; and, it seems, should be transliterated with th but then it isn't recognised by some English language apps) it is back into the mountains again for a trip of about 60km ... read more
