My plan was to go to Rethymno before Arkadi Monastery today but the traffic and parking gods had other plans for me lol. First things first, leaving Chania! My hotel is on the street where they do a big Thursday market so it was fun just to walk to my car - so much fresh fruit and veg..!! Some stuff I had no idea what it was lol, but the usual stuff was all there too and it all looked amazing. (I grabbed some cherries - I want watermelon but didn’t want to carry it / try to open it lol) The drive to Rethymno wasn’t bad - pretty solid traffic, but nothing awful. Getting off the highway was the start of the gong show though..!! Lessons learned, Thursday is market day so you do loose ... read more

Busy day today! I went to pick up my rental car… I uh, wow driving in Chania city itself is a ride haha. I don’t really have something to compare it to driving wise - lanes? Nah. Parking? God speed. To be fair my very helpful hotel guy told me there’s parking behind the school since they’re on holidays - it’s like a 5min walk from the hotel and omg worth not dealing with the chaos. I had to pickup near the airport, so on my way back towards Chania I made a few stops. First up was Holy Trinity Monastery - I saw the name/sign and was like yes, of course lol. I was wearing a short skort so wrapped my scarf around my waist. (But they had shawls inside if you didn’t have your ... read more

Ok I actually slept really well on the boat?? The cabin was def worth it - in fact I only woke up as we were basically getting into port lol. No problem, takes a while to dock anyway and then forever for everyone to get off so there was no real rush. I wandered down the street hoping I was going the right way (I was, bless) to get to the bus station t o head to Chania (boat arrived in Heraklion). The station's super organized and clean... I wouldn't say overly obvious English info, but if you know the Greek name of where you're going it's super easy to find the correct bay/gate. The only English name I saw was "Chania" which I mean... I guess is what most tourists need to know anyway lol. ... read more

Pretty uneventful day today, which was a nice change of pace from yesterday..! I still don't feel amazing, but at least no more concussion symptom flareups. I took the early ferry out of Kyllini (thankfully no creeper this time!) and started making my way back towards Athens to drop off my car. 130km/hr, let's goooooo haha. I stopped at the Rio Fortress, just outside of Patras. Easy parking, short little visit. Within the fortress you get a great view of the Rio bridge looming in the back. The fortress is mostly blocked off though - idk if it's normally like that or just because of construction..? Signs were in Greek so idk lol. But I did find one staircase that wasn't blocked off so I could go up on to the wall and one of the ... read more

Better weather today, so off on a 6hr cruise around the island! I followed the find a field, park in field approach and everyone seemed to be parking near the port in between and around all these big boats... so I followed suit lol. (I came back to a very dusty car that people drew all over, but hey, that's fine.) Since I'm staying in the middle of nowhere I wasn't eligible for pickup from MyTours, which is fine bc it means I got there before most of the other passengers. Score. I got a seat on the shady side of the boat, which is perfect bc it's the side that's closest to the island anyway during the tour. The music onboard made me laugh - it was an old school English mix, like Can’t Touch ... read more

I was supposed to go on a cruise around the island today, but it got postponed due to weather in the northwest, so instead I switched my plans and did my driving tour first. (At the end of this post I will list off my observations after a few days lol.) I headed straight up to the lookout over Navagio beach - it is THE photo spot on the island and it's on a very mountainous / one car wide road... so I wanted to beat the traffic / rush. Also, a giant cruise ship is here today so I absolutely wanted to get there and out before the coach busses started showing up...!! It's famous bc it's a beach with a giant shipwrecked boat on it, and the beach is surrounded by cliffside so only ... read more

Day 1 + Day 2 Yesterday was straight up exhausting. 5hr layover in Montreal only to then leave 40min late, after sitting on the tarmac full and ready to go for +30 min (they were doing a systems upgrade? Really?) Not much of an effective upgrade, about 20 tvs didn’t work at all, mine included LOL. Really glad I had downloaded The Witcher and a few other short funny things - a +9hr flight with no entertainment would have been disastrous lol. As usual I didn't really manage to sleep... idk why I'm fine to sleep on trains and busses, but the planes never cooperate. Athens airport is pretty lowkey, if you like. I grabbed some bagel sandwich thing for lunch (was good!) and went to pick up my rental car. I'm using Avance this whole ... read more

After our enjoyable stay in Agios Nikolaos we needed to start moving again. The first day was a short hop as we definitely wanted to go to Elounda Bay to visit Spinolonga. If any of you recognize that name, it may be because you read the book, “The Island” by Victoria Hislop about the time when the island was used as a leper colony. I had read the book years ago (and definitely now want to read it again), but knowing that Spinolonga was so close we decided to visit for ourselves. We had a pleasant sail enjoying the rugged coastline of Sicily which took us less than 2 ½ hours – our shortest move yet. Fortunately, Paul and Carole provided us with suggestions about anchoring in the bay as well as visiting Spinolonga. We decided ... read more

Our next destination on the island of Crete was Agios Nikolaos Marina where with the help of our friend, Carole from SV Swallow we had reservations. When we left Sitia we expected no wind from the forecast, but we rounded a point and were pleasantly greeted with some nice winds for sailing – a wonderful surprise! We arrived at the marina and fortunately our friends, Carole and Paul as well as the marina staff and people on the neighboring boat were there to help as Bob overshot the place they wanted us so with their assistance and Bob’s correction maneuver (thankfully there was an empty berth across from us) we got in with no damage to Tsamaya or to anyone else. That doesn’t happen often when coming into a marina, but occasionally these things happen unfortunately. ... read more

We set sail on May 27thfrom Fry at 6:06AM to head to Sitia on the island of Crete. In looking at the weather it looked like it should be an easy transit but would take about 8 ½ hours. The winds were much stronger than forecast and not in the right direction. Guess we shouldn’t be surprised. The waves kept building but Tsamaya can handle them. We had 2 sails up most of the time and were able to keep it between 30-60 degrees for part of the trip so made it in 8 hours. At times we saw 7 knots of speed which is definitely rare with us. We were a little overpowered at times when winds kept building so took in some sail. It was actually nice to feel like we were sailing as ... read more
