KARDAMYLI Kardamyli is a peaceful little village on the Mediterranean, in the Messinian Mani. The people treat you like family and not like tourists. It was a refreshing experience at this point in our trip. Our trip was cut short by the terrible fires that have affected Greece for the past week. But while we were in Kardamyli, we had a great conversation with a local named Yanni in his olive oil - honey - wine - dried herb - soap - lotion - book shop (all homemade), we swam daily, ate our own greek salad and canned dolmas on our balcony overlooking the village center, and hiked through old Kardamyli and up the hill to their ancient church. Vula, our host treated us one lunch with peppers and tomatoes stuffed with rice, meat, onions, and ... read more

Hello all, I know it’s been a while since I’ve updated but I have much to share with you. First, this blog dedicated to my time at Helike (or Nikolaiika) and another two devoted to my trips to Olympia and the Argolid, respectively. As some of you know, I’ve spent the last three weeks participating in a dig in and around the village of Nikolaiika on the shore of the Northern Peloponnese, about an hour from Patra. On the whole it was an incredible experience, largely because of the people I met there. The first two weeks, there were 11 of us altogether: Aliki, a Greek-Canadian who’d just completed a Masters in Archaeology; Effie, a Greek-American who is currently an undergraduate at Tulane; Jessica, a girl from Pennsylvania who’s just completed her undergraduate; Rachael and Erika, ... read more

Awoke at the crack of 11:00am and stumbled through breakfast. We realized that we were too late to make the 08:30 ferry to the island of Zakinthos, so decided to go for the second choice, a trip to Kalamata for shopping (yippy skippy), then down the coast to the beautiful beach at the town of Stoupa. The last few days, we have chosen our beaches by looking at the racks of postcards at the tourist joints, then going to the beach that has the best postcard. The drive down to Kalamata was much quicker than expected since the roads were much better than anything we have driven on for the past week. Kalamata did not disappoint. We found our way down to the port area and had a frappe while we planned our attack on the ... read more

Since Sunday is the typical day of rest, we decided to rest more than usual. This day was the “villa” day, which meant we tried to not go anywhere if possible. We layed around, read books, and listened to Rachel’s music. Her music was better than what the villa had to offer, which were CDs of the Best of the Bee Gees, the Best of George Michael, and the Best of Ricky Martin. I also spent the morning trying to plan out our next few days at the villa. As everyone who has traveled with me knows, I love looking at maps and reading guide books. I found a new book about this region and dove in. I was heckled for my planning, but I ignored them because I know that they will ultimately see my ... read more

HI everyone! We're currently in Nafplio -- this is our first full day here. Last night we arrived here about 7pm after: taxi bus boat bus bus yuck. the last bus we barely had any AC on and it was packed. We're staying in a really cute hotel, but i wouldn't exactly call it that. It used to be the apt/house of the current owner, and she made it into a hotel. There are exactly 5 rooms. Anyways, we had dinner last night and went to bed basically. We had a nice breakfast at the hotel which was wayyyy too much food. It's pretty surreal here: I can't really describe it and perhaps never will be able to. It's like combining an old town in a movie, say, in Italy or something and crossing it with ... read more

Today, we are being “postcard travelers”. This means that we saw a postcard yesterday, loved what we saw, bought the card, and headed out to see it. The postcard we bought yesterday was of the beach of Voidkilia. It is about 12 kilometers north of Pylos. What a beautiful site! The sand is beautiful. The bay is almost like a swimming pool, unless you get close to the entrance where the water flows in from the ocean. Then, you just enjoy the rocking of the water while floating on your neon pink inflatable. We found a perfect spot in the shade to set up camp right next to a rock cliff. We had a quick dip in the water before eating the pastries we bought at a local market on the way to the beach….mmm. ... read more

Daniel and I both woke up feeling much better today, which made Rachel happy because she didn’t want to hang around with a bunch of old fogies(SPELLING) that were falling apart. I could finally see in the sun and Daniel didn’t have a napkin hanging out the end of his nose. Today we took off to Tholo beach, which is north of our holiday villa in Kalo Nero by about 5-10 miles or so. I had read that it is sandy, clean, and uncrowded. All this things were true. We could have easily found a spot all to ourselves if we walked a little bit down the beach. However, there were free umbrellas and chairs near our car, so we snagged them up. Daniel was the first in the water as usual. “Cold” he said ... read more

Our first full day on the west coast of the Peloponnese and we are all a bit beat. We wake up at 10am and have a nice breakfast outside on our patio. We have four choices of juices to choose from: peach, cherry, and mix of some sort. We really need to expand the typical juice selection in America. We love these flavors. After nourishment, we head off to town to find the internet café. Finally, we post the first of our blogs. Of course, there are no pictures. We plan to add those as some point before we leave. I had no idea how much time it took to write up trips like this. There never seems to be time to catch up on documenting our trip even though it is pretty mellow. After ... read more

We’ve been living in Greek time, staying up late and getting up late, which is very unusual for Daniel and I. However, the heat seems to necessitate it. Rachel is in heaven. This morning is all about packing anyway, so there is no rush. We tell Brian that we will leave around 10am, but somehow that turns into 11am easily. Boy, did we string things all over the place in a short amount of time. While packing, I notice that Daniel’s Australian hat that my mother bought him a year or two ago is missing. Daniel loves this hat because it lets the breeze in and protects is face and neck from the sun, not to mention that it makes Rachel happy because she laughs every time he puts it on. Today, we are heading ... read more

Tuesday was amazingly hot. Our landlord, Brian, later said it got to 116 degrees F (well, technically he said it got to like 47 degrees C and Uncle Dan converted it on his computer, but close enough). Unfortunately that was the morning that the power went out. No air conditioning in that weather is pretty miserable, so Uncle Dan went on a walk. Bird watching was a little impossible though because as he said, “the birds were sweating too”. When Aunt Mary finally got up, she called Brian and made sure the air would be back up soon, so we decided to head out and it was cooler when we got back. We went to Nafplion, about half an hour away. I loved it there. Uncle Dan and Aunt Mary even put up with shopping ... read more
