Monday 29 June 2015 Yesterday's taste of Dresden, together with success in finding a useful map of the city had us really looking forward to exploring in more detail today. We were glad to use the bus for transport as there is a stop right outside our hotel on the city fringe, so convenient. This also gave our tour driver a break for the day. First task in the city was to find breakfast and so we did. A traditionally furnished Swiss restaurant proved irresistible with the most beautiful Bircher muesli complete with fruit and yoghurt. A different choice was made by the other tour member, but was equally enjoyable. Then began our city stroll, taking in the sights and enjoying the slower pace struck by fellow tourists. With the ever present cobbles a slower pace ... read more

Of course, with so many unexpected predicaments in our European rail track record, leaving Berlin for Dresden, we made absolutely sure AGAIN, that we were at the station early enough to avoid any mishaps. Folks, I should look more closely at my train tickets but more on that in a while. There were so many people on the platform and lots of scurrying to find seats. Someone in the cabin nearest to us saw that we were looking for a seat and beckoned us to sit in two apparently vacant seats. And so we obliged hoping that neither was reserved. As luck would have it, nobody showed up to claim them and we were on our merry way to Dresden. There must have been a reason that we picked those particular seats since we just happened ... read more

Lots of photos today so don’t forget to check at the end of the text! Tuesday 2 June: We were up at 6 and had croissants on the balcony of our hotel room. It was a bit of a restless night as it was quite warm plus we were sharing a king bed. We headed into the city and stored our luggage at the Hauptbahnhof before walking to the Deutsche Bahn (DB) museum. This is quite extensive and traces the development of rail in Germany from the early 1800s. There are some old trains and carriages on display although much of it is models. The most ornate carriage we found belonged to Ludwig II which was no surprise to us after what we had previously learned about his spending habits! Bismarck’s coach was on display too ... read more

Day 2 - Dover to Dresden This was always going to be a tough day, calling for about 9 hours on the road after a 2 hour ferry crossing..... and so it proved. Fun, though. We were up and out of the b&b by 5am, and on the ferry by 6. Whilst other passengers slept on any flat surface they could find, we spent the time drinking 143 espressos, taking sneaky photos of the maps in the shop, and totally failing to work out how to split the cost of the petrol we'd used so far (surprising, considering that one of our party is an accounts analyst). We also spent a mere 21 minutes working out how to stick on those weird little european headlight deflectors. "But you've still stuck them on upside down", you might ... read more

This weekend trip has been mostly stress-free, which is partly how I define a successful vacation. I feel like I've seen most of what Dresden has to offer, and anything that remains will give me a reason to come back. To start off with, yes, we went to the Lebowski bar, and there are several pictures of it here. They do indeed have the movie showing - I assume that it's on repeat, since we didn't really stay there long enough to make sure. The decor is also Lebowski-inspired: the art, including framed objects and wall murals, all either show scenes from the movie or props that could easily have shown up there. They even have bowling shoes hanging from the ventilation piping above the bar. It's pretty small - longer than it is wide, by ... read more

We hit the road pretty hard last night and most of today, so now that's the weekend, we're taking it a little easier. Our bus trip from Jena to Dresden yesterday went perfectly - there was wifi on the bus, and the seats were very nice. I think this was a new bus line, in competition with the German national bus system. I'll definitely not mind using them again if I need a bus. This was my first time on the Autobahn, and though the bus didn't do any mind-blowing speeds, some of the cars and motorcycles passing us sure did. My new bag made the trip smoothly, too. A Russian family at one point asked Erica to talk to a friend in German as we approached one of the stops, I'm guessing just to make ... read more

Geo: 51.051, 13.7337We start out our morning with a breakfast brunch compliments of the hotel. It has everything and, typical of our experience in Europe, fresh and delicious. Eggs, cereal, fruit and rolls with the best jams are my favorites but I always try something new. Mom, being more adventurous in this area, goes for stuff I have no idea what it is. Lots of cheeses, lunch meats and sausages are there too. It's a good place to try weird stuff. At 8:36, we rolled out of Hannover on the train for our trip to Dresden. Everything goes smooth. The first class car was only a half a car so we sat at a table across from two German businessmen who didn't speak English. No conversation happening here so I worked on the blog, we talked, ... read more

The walk from Dresden Central Station felt like a marathon!! Our backpacks may as well have been another person, pressing their boney limbs into our backs!! Our hotel was like an unreachable, mountain peak in the distance, teasing us with images of hot showers and soft beds. If the weather was warmer, it might've seemed like a mirage. Ok, obviously I'm being dramatic...but we did suffer more than usual on that leg. The hotel was rather nice, so we were very comfortable for our two night stay. There was a conveniently located German restaurant (Feldschlößchen), right next door - literally about 15 metres!! It had good reviews on Trip Advisor, so we had dinner there on our first night. I tried some of their Pilsner - brewed in-house. I could well come home from Europe a ... read more

We had to be gone earlier this morning because some inspector was coming by to inspect the building Dieter and Gudrun live in so that the owner of the building could refinance or something. So, we got up earlier than we have been, and were out of the house early, and took the Straßenbahnback to the city center again. Today, the main attraction was to be Der Dresdner Zwinger, a palace full of wondrous things, from the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon, to the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, to the Porzellansammlung. First, we went to the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon, where we bou... read more
