Riding on the Rhine Oct 11, 2022
Good morning, I was up first and dressed. Kirsten was close behind me. We were both ready to have breakfast.
We started walking, looking for the eBike rental shop in
Rudesheim Am Rhein. Our walk was all downhill....my first concern. Well, the address was 46 Oberstrasse. We easily found 42 Oberstrasse, a restaurant and it was closed. At #44 Oberstrasse, Kirsten saw someone cleaning and milling around inside the restaurant. She let us in and Kirsten and her began their German discussion back and forth. Me, I was looking for the restroom, when I returned from the restroom everyone was gone and the lights were out.
You can only imagine what I was thinking, WHAT, WHO, WHERE is everyone.?? I’m wandering around the outside of the restaurant now and then I see Kirsten inside the building next to the restaurant waving at me thought the window. She points to the door, and I walk over and its locked, she lets me in.
Apparently, the son of the restaurant owner is the
eBike shop owner. His shop is run from the restaurant. Once we get our detailed instructions on how to ride an
eBike; only then do they allow us to take off. In Germany, every rental has come with detail instructions on how to operate an eBike.
Really, is it that complex or do they just enjoy hearing themselves talk?
Finally, we’re off and rolling. We find our path and were cruising up into the vineyards. We’re heading to the top of the vineyard where a huge monument dedicated to WWI is located. You know, one of those monuments that says we’ll never have another war like this. Yeah, one of those. We rode the path, switching back and forth enjoying the scenery. It was amazing how quickly we arrived at the top.
We have been here before with Omi a few years ago. We rested a bit before taking off again. Now we’re looking for the castles perched on the side of the hills. You know the ones you see on the Viking River Cruise commercials, yeah those. We rode through the woods and found them. Wow!! they were awesome, overlooking the Rhine. It was beautiful.
From the castles we headed toward
Hildegard Abbey. Yes, it’s still a fully functioning abbey. We rode paved paths and gravel paths
and finally made it to the abbey. It was lunch time and yes, they had a café that served food and beer. We had brought our own lunch, so we just purchased a couple beers and sat outside having our roadside picnic.
I believe, no I know, that some of our best memories are from roadside picnics.
After lunch, we continued down the mountain side working our way toward the Rhine River.
Kirsten stopped at one point and made an executive decision, whenever we come to an intersection of paths, we only take paved paths going forward.
Sure, like I was going to override her.
We followed the Rhine for 15 plus miles, stopping at a beer garden and wine garden to have a snack along the way.
We sat and people watched and watched the barges and river boats go by. The weather was very pleasant, and we were relaxed.
Finally, we made it back to the eBike shop and turned in our bikes. WOW! it was a great day, and we were ready to go and find us some dinner.
Oh yeah, we had to walk back to the Zimmer.
Yeah, it was all up hill and by the time we arrived, I was ready for a beer.
We had dinner in our Zimmer, and it was great, around 10 pm we were both ready to fall asleep.
Tomorrow we were going to find the Main River and cycle it.
Good night.
