Hello to all. Mark and I are in Dusseldorf now waiting for our flight to depart for Bangkok. We cannot believe how quickly the time has passed in the past month. We said goodbye to Grant yesterday in Rome after having an incredible month travelling around Europe. In the days before he left, we went to Florence and wanted to visit the Duomo, but with our luck it was Sunday and it was closed. However, we were able to see the David which is really something. It is mind boggling to think about how someone could carve that from one solid piece of stone. We then caught a late train to Rome and crashed after a very long day from travelling from Croatia. The next morning we got up and saw everything there is to see ... read more

One last trip was in order before departure, so I packed a few things and train-trekked over to Köln (Cologne). Yeah, yeah, I know I was there right after I arrived, but I still hadn’t seen the Haasterts, so Cologne gets the distinct honor of appearing in my travelblog twice! I know the Haasterts because the youngest of their 3 kids, Neta, decided to be an exchange student to the states ‘way, way back’ in 1998, and ended up in my family (actually living in my bedroom) for 10 months, during the same time that I was on my exchange year to Switzerland. I met Tom Haastert (kid number 2) in the train on Friday, and together we stashed our stuff in the train station luggage lockers and took off for a couple hours of hanging ... read more

(Another day, another Mass....) Heilige Messe at Aachener Dom was fantastic. As a weekday morning Mass, it was small, sparsely attended (mostly by nuns, and at least one monk) and music-free. However, it was a great opportunity not only to see, but to experience the inside of this ancient church. I believe it's the oldest in Germany and one of the oldest in northern Europe. Out of respect, I did not take any photographs inside, not even after the service. It was very dark anyway and they wouldn't've turned out too well. There are a lot of nuns in Germany and Austria, by the way. Mostly older women (the vocation, like Masonry and Eastern Star and practically everything else, is in decline), but I've seen at least one young nun and at least one African nun. ... read more

Been there, done that, got the T-Shirt! That’s right, friends. I went to the U2 concert in Gelsenkirchen. Ever heard of it? Me either, but apparently 60, 000 other people know where it is cuz they were all there too. I’ve never been in a stadium that big in my life. That in itself was an experience. One thing that was different from the stadium shows I’ve been to back home was all the people who go out to the stadium early to hang around the grounds for what seemed like a big tailgate party. I thought that was neat. The other thing I noticed is that when the show started, the entire crowd stood, and stayed standing for the entire show. Even up in the rafters where I was sitting. The concert was super! For ... read more

As some of you may remember, I go to school sometimes too (hee, hee). On that note, the design project I am involved in with the product design department has quite a story to go with it, which, if you want to hear I will tell you (send me a message). The project details go a little something like this: Melitta and Fachhochschule Coburg got in contact (somehow, I don’t know… this was last year some time), and decided to work together developing new product ideas for Melitta. Result: Melitta’s happy because they get free creative labor, fresh ideas from a new perspective and the school’s happy because it gets to develop cool, fresh ideas for a big name-brand, and the *students* are happy because *they* can put it in their portfolio! So… now that the ... read more

Ja das goed, ja. Germany is great. Love it. Love the people (suprisingly), the food, the culture, making fun of their awful language, the parties - the germans really know how to party and well pretty much everything about it. I have met some wonderful people from Germany and one of those people is my great friend Christian Hirschen. We met at UCD where he joined Delta Sigma Phi, we had an absolute fantastic time that year. We then met up in Amsterdam for a couple of days and after a botched attempt to fly to Poland I ended up going to Mallorca and then to Germany to see Christian. Getting off that train and seeing Christian standing there in his Canadian Tuxedo made the whole trip worth it. "So Lloyd, wat za fuck man" haha, ... read more

I just spent 2 days in Cologne. It is another fabulous German city. It’s most famous as being the home of the Cologne Cathedral (a UNESCO world heritage site). After having visited I can appreciate why. Construction on the gothic style cathedral began in 1248 and was completed in 1880. It didn’t actually take 632 years to build; the construction took place in stages. Inside the cathedral you’ll find the shrine containing relics of the 3 Magi. This is why the Cologne Cathedral has been a pilgrimage church. If you ever visit I highly recommend the guided tour. Another thing you can do at the cathedral is climb the 509 steps to the observation platform within one of the cathedrals towers. Yes, I said 509. It’s a long way up a spiraling staircase. I’m not afraid ... read more

Date: 07.02.2005 Destination: Cologne, Germany Day: 1 Rosenmontag was celebrated this time of the year and with big Carnival. We went to one of the biggest in Germany, in Cologne. Basically the whole city was closed down for parades and parties. We went there from Duisburg and supposedly the journey will take just one hour but because the train was so packed, we reached there late. The most interesting part was that people were in festive mood all around, drinking, eating, wearing funny custome and weird-looking hats. The moment we reached Cologne main bus station, the Carnival started. It was hard even to move around. People laughing, screaming.... We walked to the Cologne Cathedral just outside of the main station. This is really one of the crepiest great cathedral in the world, the dark structure and ... read more

... read more
