My trip to Deutschland (Germany) in March 2008 started very much like my trip to Great Britain the year before, on a mad urge to escape! I had been lending my car to my son who was using it to take his little family around. Being isolated in the village they needed it badly. But so did I. One day I said I was leaving, going to visit some friends in Germany, driving there with... my car. I left my place in France on 20 March at 6am to be precise and arrived at my friend's door in Germany in Hanau near Frankfurt at 6pm, i.e. twelve hours on the road in straight line, diagonally from the middle of France heading north-east into Germany. On a map it goes from my village near Argenton-sur-Creuse to Bourges, ... read more

So I am back home again. The adventure Ireland is over. The term adventure is slightly hyperbolical except for the money I spend. That was quite adventerous. Ireland ist freaking expensive you wouldn't believe it. And sorry I didn't update for some time now. After I got back home I was busy getting stuff done. To be honest the rest of my trip wans't really exciting. It was still nice and I did qiute some traveling going south again. But it wasn't the same. I went to see the Giants Causeway and Malin head. Then turned South torwards Donegal and finally even further South to Waterford, Wesford. That's where I spend my last couple of days. On the Beach at Wexford. Boring but nice weather, looked like carribean to me :) I stayed there for two ... read more

Well, we've arrived in Germany safe and sound :) It's 2:20 in the afternoon here, which is 8:20pm Eastern Time back in the States (Sorry...I was tired and meant to say 8:20am!!) and we're all pretty tired. We're in Hanau for the night and they're putting us on a bus to Mannheim first thing in the morning. If permanent housing is as nice as the temporary place they put us in I'll be pretty okay with living on post :) Our plane got into Frankfurt at 7:30 this morning and it took us a while to clear immigration, get all of our luggage and the dogs, and go through customs (which is where they look at the boys' medical paperwork). It all got slowed down because there were a lot of those big green Army duffels ... read more

I was stationed in Germany three times. Once when I was single from 1983 to 1984 at Schwienfurt. The second time in Wiesbaden with my brand new family from 1990 to 1993. And the last time was from 1996 to 2003 at a small town of Hanau, about 15 miles south of Frankfurt. Fleigerhorst Kaserne used to be a German Air force base during the second World War. It survived the war because the Allies could not pinpoint the air base from the sky and therefore could not bomb it. The secret was water. The Germans would pump about two inches of water into the airfield when an attack is imminent. From the sky it appears to be a lake. Germany has a lot of history, castles medieval fest and beerfest. On weekends we would drive ... read more
