did go to neuschwanstein. it was very beautiful. unfortunately we couldn't spend very long there coz the trains are very infrequent. ended up taking about 2.5 hrs to get there but then we only stayed about 40 mins. i got lots of photos though. the town area is very nice so would've been good to explore a bit more but oh well. yesterday i went back to the english gardens and pretty much stayed there all day. it was a gorgeous day and nice to be by the river. i'll probably be doing the same again today as i'm not in a shopping or sight seeing mood!!!! i leave munich tomorrow and go to st johann - the extreme sports area in austria, in the mountains. should be nice.... read more

Grüße Gott! Today I took the EurAide tour to Schloß (Castle) Neuschwanstein, Schloß Linderhof, Wieskirche (Wies Church) and an unscheduled but abbreviated drive-by of another church and monastery at Ettal. Wieskirche was disappointing. We arrived at exactly the time a Mass was starting, so we were unable to look around inside or take photographs. I got the impression that Herr Wissenberg (our tour guide and owner?/manager of EurAide) knew in advance that this would be the case, and the interior is really the reason for visiting, so I'm not sure what the point was. However, we did get to see the inside (from the back), and even hear part of the Mass, and I picked up a guidebook with detailed photos and information about the church, so I guess it is not much different from the ... read more

arrived here yesterday afternoon and went for a wander down to the city - marienplatz. it's really hot here now. 30ish. sooo sunny and nice. went on a beer garden crawl last night. was lots of fun with lots of people. went on a free walking tour of the city this morning. it was brilliant. probably the best tour i've been on - and the guy only worked only for tips - so you can give as much or as little as you like. it's so good. he was irish and very funny and knowledgable about the city, so the tour was really entertaining as well as educational. that lasted for about 4 hours as we stopped for lunch at a beer garden in the middle of a market. beer gardens are everywhere. it's a strange ... read more

Grüße Gott! I read, but had forgotten, that this is how German-speakers in Bayern (Bavaria) and Austria say "hello", so it was quite disorienting at first since I had come to expect, and had practiced, "Guten Morgen" (good morning) or "Guten Tag" (good day) as used in the north. Now I think I have the hang of "Grüße Gott" (which literally means, "greet God") as well. In fact, I think I have officially learned just enough German to be dangerous, as I'm able to ask rather complex questions now... the obvious problem with this being that I get back rather complex replies in German. However, I did successfully ask a young man at the Drogerie (drugstore, but really only a toiletries store) whether they had contact-lens solution there or if I needed to go to an ... read more

Still got that cold today. I declared myself a day off; even if I weren't already totally entitled to one, it helps that most museums and major attractions are closed on Mondays. I slept until 9:30 and dinked around, rearranged luggage, watched CNN International, and so forth until about 11:30 before showering. My hotel room is in a small suite with toilet and shower shared with two other rooms; annoying, but survivable and nicely affordable. I headed out after noon on a Mission From God™ to get some laundry done in a real washing machine with real soap. The travel wash I bought from Rick's store leaked (thank heavens for Ziploc, but, hello, travel wash, Rick?!!) and washing stuff in a sink without a stopper was minimally effective in a pinch, but kinda yucky (clean but ... read more

I met Karin Engelhardt by accident in Hofbrauhaus a couple of weeks ago, and found out that she was the first Fachhochschule Coburg student to come to K-State. That was three years ago now, but she’s still around, finishing up her last semester in school. She goes home almost every weekend to her town of Himmelkron and she invited me to with her anytime I liked, so I called her up for this past weekend of the 17th-19th of June. (June? Already?) Karin picked me up Friday afternoon, and we hit the road. The first stop was supposed to be a visit to Karin’s godmother, who was in the hospital with minor pains, but a few wrong turns later happenstance put us at the foot of a hill with a well-known Pilgramige Church atop. I’d known ... read more

Sorry to send out this blog so soon after our blog from Amsterdam, but since it is done we thought it was important to get back on track. And for our true fans who just can’t get enough…we’ll feed your addiction just this once. We leave for Venice tomorrow so expect our blog on Salzburg soon as well… As we travel through the cloudy German/Austrian country side from Munich to Salzburg via train with the alps not so far in the distance, it is hard not to think back on the incredible journey we have had over the last 18 days. What seemed daunting at first, now has become reasonable and, dare I say, “normal.” But as we pass each German sounding city that they announce over the loud speaker, I am reminded that we ought ... read more

What an interesting few days, and each was certainly very different from the other. My first day was spent almost purely in transit from Venice to Munich. I got a quick haircut in Venice too before I took the train, my first since leaving Canada. The barber didnt speak English, but my passport photo is very recent, and was taken the same day as I got a haircut, perfect! I just showed him it and said "like this", he did a fantastic job. The trainride from Venice to Munich....wow....speechless. That was easily the most beautiful trainride I have been on yet, right through Innsbruck and the Austrian Alps. Too beautiful. I arrived in Munich around 2030, rather late. Luckily the hostel I had booked myself into was only 50 metres from the train station, a very ... read more

Hello to all! Wish I could say it is nice and warm here, but its overcast and cool. Maybe it will be better in Vienna. We were planning on getting on a train and going to Salzberg, but we missed it so we will just go on to Vienna. Munich was very good to us. I ended up getting my bag although I packed a lot of warm clothes so I am still kinda stinky! Friday we went on a really geat bike tour and saw a lot of Munich sites and learned some history. We went to a beer garden in the English Garden(it is called English because it was all planned out). I have some great pictures and will try to post them today if I can. A guy that we met on the ... read more
