Neuschwanstein Take a trip to the fairy tale castle known as Neuschwanstein. Neuschwanstein (New Swan Rock) was opened up to the public 7 weeks after King Ludwig II passed away in 1886. Over 1.3 million people visit the castle every year. Take a bus ride or hike up to see this beautiful castle. I recommend the hike however if you are willing to take a bit of time (say 30-40 minutes) out of your day to see the beautiful scenery and enjoy the weather. Tourist Information* •Tickets to the castle can only be bought at Ticketcenter Hohenschwangau. This is before you arrive at the castle) •If you are traveling with somebody disabled every Wednesday there is a special guided tour for people in wheelchairs or who use walkers. •No smoking, photographing or filming is allowed inside ... read more

Schloß Neuschwanstein is one of the many castles built by King Ludwig II during his reign. King Ludwig II is known also as the “fairy tale king”, because of this and the many other castles he built. Neuschwanstein was unfortunately never finished. Before the castle could be finished Ludwig was forced to abdicate by the members of government, because he was so deep in debt from building so many castles. The very next morning after arriving in Munich, he was found drowned in the Starnbergersee (where I went last weekend!). The circumstances of his death are still a mystery. Neuschwanstein is only one kilometer away from another castle called Schloß Hohenschwangau, which we were also able to see. Neuschwanstein is the castle that Walt Disney modeled the castle in Sleeping Beauty and the Disneyland castle after. ... read more

At the next day - Tuesday we decided we experience something completely different. We noticed cable rail next to the Hohenschwangau village and we decided to go there early morning. We had purpose to see some more attractions except fairy tale castles biult by king Ludwig II of Bavaria. We hadn't suitable stuff to hiking over mountains so we could have ride in cable rail to the top of Tegelberg and hike a bit overthere. How to get to cable rail station under Tegelberg from Schwangau by foot? Easy :P We just went left and short after we turned into Tegelbergerstraβe. Everything included station at the top is visible from Schwangau. When you walking along the Tegelbergerstraβe you'd get to the small bridge, cross it and you'd see the cable rail station. Piece of cake :-) ... read more

When we finished the first tour we followed by the program and we went towards second castle, much more famous - Neuschwanstein Castle. German: Schloβ Neuschwanstein - I can translate this as New Swan Stone castle or something like that. because We had any spare time we walked a bit and we spent most of that time in shop with rubbish stuff for tourists (this is my opinion someone might has an opposite one). Ania purchased someting, I ignored these stuff as usual because I have no enought room to keep this kind of souvenirs from all my trips in home :P Still was raining, but we didn't take that as obstruction and we went towards Neuschwanstein. We weren't alone, no definitely no - crowd of tourists followed in the two opposite directions - towards and ... read more

One of the most beautiful places in the world is an easy day trip from Munich, Germany. Through the Bavarian Alps, the Castle Neuschwanstein towers on a mountain above the quintessential Alps towns of Hohenschwangau and nearby Füssen. It was an easy journey from Munich. I took the 2 hour train from Munich's Main Station (München Hauptbahnhof) to Füssen, then a quick bus ride (bus #73) to Hohenschwangau. Or if you want to try out your race car driving skills you can take the legendary Autobahn. The bus dropped me off at the base of the foothills where Neuschwanstein sits and it was up to me to hike the way up. I could have stayed for weeks in Füssen; spending my days hiking the lush trails and then searching for the best chocolate shop, but I ... read more

While we were planning our ski vacation in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, we knew that we just have to see the famous Neuschwanstein, or Ludwig's castle. So we took a day, not a very sunny day, to go there. What we didn't know is that if it snowed the previous day, like it did, we couldn't take the bus up to the castle but walk (quite steep) uphill for half an hour! Apart from this exercise, we enjoyed sightseeing, even went to see the other castle, Ludwig's parents castle - Hohenschwangau, just below Neuschwanstein.... read more

A Czech long weekend was all the excuse we needed for a whirlwind trip of Bavaria with our friends Kate and Garrett (usually referred to by accident as Gate and Carrot...I think it's called a spoonerism?). Don't know what the name of holiday was, but chances are it was in honour of a saint drowned by the king, or a priest tarred and feathered for not revealing the confessions of the queen, or something just as random and medieval. Whatever it was we managed to do a lot of driving in 2 full days taking in the fairytale Neuschwanstein, Oktoberfest Munich and medieval Rothenburg ob ber Tauber. The original aim was just Neuschwanstein (whose pronunciation eluded me the whole trip). But Munich was pretty much on the way, and we were passing around lunch time so ... read more

The second day at the base, we took a tour to Neuschwanstein, probably the most famous castle in the world. It was great, until we walked all the way to the Mary Bridge and saw all the scaffolding on the castle. C'est dommage!!!! We had a great time nonetheless...... read more

Neuschwanstein Castle. Near the town of Schwangau, in the Allgäu area of the Alps. We left the Christmas village of Rothenburg, and headed south. Next on our quick trip through Bavaria, was the castle of Neuschwanstein. With each mile, there was more and more snow on the ground. Soon, we were surrounded in a scene from a winter post card. And when we caught a glimpse of the castle through the trees, we could see that Disney probably did get his inspiration for Cinderella's castle, from Neuschwanstein. It's maybe a little too cold for Tinkerbell. Unlike most castles, this castle was not built as a defense for the town. It was for a king's fantasy. And it is not ancient. King Ludwig II began contruction in 1869, and with all the money of royalty at his ... read more

Friday 3rd October With damp jeans hung up all over the beds and hung up in the shower, we set off for King Ludwig II’s most famous and photographed castle Schloss Neuschwanstein. It was raining when we left the camping ground and it was still raining when we arrived at the gorgeous town of Fussen and boy was it packed with tourist!! When I asked about the million tourists, the lady smiled and informed me that we’d come to the castle on the wrong day. Friday was a public holiday and therefore all the Germans were having a long weekend and visiting the castle with us!! Damn!! The rain hadn’t stopped falling so we ventured out with all our wet wear gear including colourful water ponchos for the kids. When my parents and kids stood close ... read more
