It was a perfect fall weather for hiking although the hike to Neuschwanstein was steep, not easy. After climbing the hills, the ultimate fairy-tale castle stood there welcoming our arrival. "Wow" was the word I used when I saw the castle. This is where a fantasy did come true. The romantic castle was build by King Ludwig II from 1869-1886. The construction stopped with the king's death, and it was never completed furnished. We hiked further to Marienbruke to marvel at King Ludwig's castle, just as he did hundreds of years ago. Looking at this beautiful landscape, I quickly forgot that I was standing on a high, shaky bridge. The fall foliage added vibrant color to this already breathtaking view! The imperfection in this perfect moment was the ongoing exterior castle renovation. It was completely covered ... read more

We stopped at a Bäckerei (bakery) and a Metzgerei (butcher) for lunch fixins before we left town. The 2-hour drive into the Alps was beautiful, of course. One interesting thing about Bavaria is the farms all seem to be small family operations, and it's common to see actual farmers actually farming as we drive by. Neuschwanstein is Neuschwanstein. What more need be said? We had to wait three hours for our guided tour, which afforded us time to eat and nap and plenty else if there had been anything else to do on the side of the mountain, which there wasn't, so pretty much just nap. While we waited, Ramona & Horst sneaked away to a local Käserei (cheese shop) and stocked up on highly aromatic items for our 2-hour drive home. ;) After Neuschwanstein, we ... read more

What a Fun Day!! We got up at 6:00am to have an early breakfast, and to fight the commuter traffic in Munich to get to Neuschwanstein Castle by 9:45am to check in for our tour. Charlene had purchased combo reservations back home for us to see this Castle, as well as the Hohenschwangau Palace. The location is about 1 hour 45 minutes southwest of our hotel in Munich, and the the rain was pretty heavy this morning. Our trusty GPS got us there without a hitch (and we had several road changes on the way - I would have been lost with a traditional map). Took lots of pictures on the way down there as the countryside was absolutely beautiful - lots of farmland with backdrops of dramatic mountains (still containing some snow). Got stuck behind ... read more

In true Karen/Angel fashion, we waited around Platform 27 for the train taking us to Neuschwanstein Castle, only to discover we were supposed to be at Platform 32. But we eventually made it to the idyllic town of Fussen, and then to the Castle. The Castle is the model for the Cinderella castle at Disney world. It was built by this crazy King Ludwig II and is the inspiration for most of Wagner's opera's (Wagner was rumored to be Ludwig's lover). After the Castle, we ran into a small stand run by a couple guys grilling wursts and rocking out to Godsmack-like songs. That was definitely one of the highlights of the day...at least for one of us. We went back to Munich that night and enjoyed an authentic hearty Bavarian meal.... read more

There are some things in life that aren't quite all they're cracked up to be like Cinderella's Castle at Disneyland or the Big Goose Pagoda in Xi'an. But to make up for those disappointments, every so often a real gem of an attraction that comes along and makes it all seem worth the effort again. Neuschwannstein, the famous fairy-tale castle perched deep in the Bavanarian landscape was my destination today and I hadn't been expecting much given all the hype about it. My sister and I left a cold Munich for the 11.00 train to Fussen, the small town that is the gateway to Neuschwannstein Castle. It took just over 2 hours to reach the town and as the train sped along, the scenery outside changed from cold and frosty to blanketed deep in crisp white ... read more

The majority of the group took our first independent trip on Friday, September 7. We caught our train at 9:20 am and road the train to Munich, which took an hour, and then transferred to the train to Fussen, which was 3 hours. Luckily, we got the whole train to ourselves, all 14 of us! The train ride went by quickly, at least for me. I played Phase ten for the whole ride...and we didn't even finish the game. Once we got closer to Fussen, we all took pictures from the open train windows to get great shots of the Black Forrest and the mountains. It was much colder there than it was when we left Ingolstadt. Once we reached Fussen, we left the train station to ride a bus that took us directly to the ... read more

Proost!!!! Greetings all, this entry is to cover the period since we both arrived in europe. We met Frans at Schipol airport (Amsterdam) and headed back towards his place on the 21st March. Holland's traffic is ridiculous so Frans took us to a small pub somewhere in Holland, pretty different, while the traffic died down. Over the next few days we then visited much of Holland with them, places such as a 500 year old fishing village, Royal castle in Holland, the Delta Works, and last but definitely not least Amsterdam and the red light district. They also took us to the Palm Brewery in Belgium (best beer we've ever tasted) as well as Brugge, an old town in Belgium which was very beautiful. Picked up our car and headed South through Germany, currently we're at ... read more

Untitled Proost all! Much has happened in the last week or so, only have time for a breif summary!!. Kim and I met on the 21st of March at Schipol Airport (Amsterdam) and were picked up by Frans. Traffic was a nightmare so we stopped at a local pub which was interesting, noone knows English!!!! We visited many places with Frans and Tina over the next week such as the Delta Works, Brugge, Arnhem, Palm Brewery (best beer ever), and last but not least Amsterdam and it's famous red light district. After picking up our car we slowly drank our way south. The cities here are very beautiful, Heildelburg, KÖln, Rothenburg (walled city which we spent a night in), Rhine river, Koblenz, and now finally at Schwangau, just near Fussen which is on the Austrian/Switzerland border ... read more

We just came to Munich because its the only way we can use our Railpasses to get to Füssen and the fairytale castle built by "Mad" King Ludwig (Google up Neuschwanstein Castle if you're interested in the whole bizarre story) We did the City Sightseeing tour on arrival in Munich but after the places we've been in the past 2 weeks it didn't do a lot for us. Having said that there were a few lovely buildings, especially around the old city centre of Marienplatz (see pics). Caught the early train down to Füssen - the Munich railway station is something else - biggest in Europe with 36 international and long distance platforms plus two other levels of local rail systems and a virtual city of restaurants, banks, shops ....you name it. Wave after wave of ... read more

Overview: 1. Thanks to Harlan for his funny, although not completely PC comments. We knew we could count on you for some humor Harlan. 2. Is it a holiday in Japan right now? Seriously, they were EVERYWHERE along the Romantic road. They flood Neuschwanstein like they were invading it, and in Rothenburg it was the same. Apparently Japanese people LOVE the romantic medieval knights and castles thing more than Americans. It honestly became comical how many there were. 3. Speaking of Romantic Road...although it is beautiful and lends itself to oogling, there are some places where you should just not make out. Topping the list is the Nazi Museum in Nurenburg. Seriously, the NAZI museum is not the place for that. Apparently genocide is an aphrodisiac in Germany for this particular couple--not cool man. 4. Signs ... read more
