Another heavy breakfast and off we went, this time back to see the Harburg Castle or Schloss Harburg. We reached the south side of Harburg, remembering the north side road up was closed last time, and after a couple false starts, I found the Schloss Strasse road that took us to the castle. It was almost 10am, opening time, but we took some photos and by the time we reached the ticket office the 10am tour had already started. We paid our 3 Euros each to enter the castle grounds (the actual tour was hourly and cost another 4 Euros) and the WC to take care of business. This castle was much closer to my idea of a castle versus some others that have been more like a palace than a castle. It had several towers, ... read more

We decided today to visit Nordlingen, one of few German towns with a more or less complete medieval wall, and maybe stop to visit the Harburg Castle on the way back. We had the same basic assortment of food for breakfast, including various meats, cheeses, cereal with fruit, rolls with jam or cream cheese, and of course coffee or cappuccino. After breakfast, we headed out in our car, hoping we'd have a good parking spot when we returned. The trip to Nordlingen was about 30 kms, on the typically small two-lane roads, which were kept in excellent condition. We'd noted very few bad spots so far on any of the roads, and numerous occasions where they were fixing what few bad spots there were. Although almost always only two lanes, on some of the major stretches ... read more

After yesterday's long day of traveling and sightseeing, we decided to take it easy today. After breakfast, we strolled down the main streets, Pflegstrasse and Riechstrasse looking for the tourist office we'd noticed last night. Along the way we passed the famous Kathe Kruse Puppen-Museum (Doll Museum) that we knew we wanted to visit, but figured we'd wait until after we visited the Tourist Information Office. This office, as usual, was in the Rathaus or City Hall. We found a decent map and flyer, then started following the numbers of interesting sights from there. The walking tour map started on Insel Ried or Isle of Ried, which we'd checked out last night. We passed through the Rieder Tor (Rieder Tower) and then walked around the tiny island, looking for anything interesting. It is a pretty island, ... read more

We packed up our stuff, ate our final breakfast in Creglingen, loaded the car, and headed out. We had decided to stop in a few places between Creglingen and our next layover in Donauworth. Our first stop was in Schillingsfurst. I had originally told Manoli this town probably wasn't worth stopping in since it had so few sights, but when she noticed it had a castle, she wanted to stop there. Schillingsfurst is a fairly small town, even by our recent standards. Since we had no information to speak of, much less a map, I'd put the location of the Tourist Information Center in the car's GPS. When we were more or less there, Manoli noticed a good looking place to park which was also near the sign that said Rathaus or City Hall. This is ... read more
