Happy Birthday Omi Oct 8, 2022
We were up early .....the bed was as hard as the floor. Neither of us slept well, but we showered and out the door we went. Our Zimmer didn’t provide breakfast, we knew that and we’re off to find a bakery/café.
The folks at the Zimmer told us Um de Ecke (around the corner). Well up the street we found the bakery. We each had a brochen and coffee.
Back in the car, off we go toward Wangen.
So, this trip was thrown together very quickly.
Why you ask?
Today is Hedy Hancock birthday. As everyone knows, our dearest Mutti, Omi passed recently.
Maria, James, Eva and Swen decided weeks ago to meet today (Hedy’s Birthday) at Maria’s house to spread Hedy and Bill’s ashes in Maria’s garden where Hedy and Bill have spent many, many hours, days and evenings vacationing.
Basically, a remembrance for Hedy and Bill. We were all invited but due to everyone’s busy life, along with a hurricane thrown in, everyone regretfully declined.
Well at the last moment the stars aligned, and Kirsten and I jumped on the plane and off to
Germany we went.
Kirsten wanted to surprise everyone. We kept it hush hush, which explains why the blogs are delayed.
I entered Wangen into Google Maps and Apple Car Play took it from there. From our Zimmer we had 4-hour drive. Back roads because Kirsten must have a scenic route, and I strongly agree.
Again, we stopped and had a picnic on the side of the road and rested a bit and then back into the car and off we went.
While Kirsten was diving, I found us a hotel in Wangen and booked it. I got to tell you this whole internet and iPhone thing is amazing. I’m searching hotels, restaurants and festivals as were heading down the road.
We arrived in Wangen, parked the car, and checked into our hotel. It was totally automated.
I walked up to the door swiped my credit card it issued two card type keys and the front door popped open.
Our hotel is just a few blocks from Maria’s house, so we decided to walk to her house.
As we got close to Maria’s, we turned the corner, and we could see Eva and
Swen had just arrived and Maria and James were greeting them. Amazing timing, as navigator I take full credit. Kirsten is rolling her eyes......
We walked up behind them and followed them in. They didn’t notice us walking up while they were getting their stuff and greeting each other. We followed them upstairs into Maria’s apartment.
They were talking and laughing not even noticing we were behind them until they reached the top of the stairs.
Swen turned; shocked that someone was behind him and them exploded with excitement when he realized it was Kirsten and me.
Lots and lots of hug’s tears and laughter were exchanged over the next hour.
Maria had cake and coffee just like Omi had requested. We sat around remembering Hedy and Bill each telling stories. What a wonderful time.
James read Omi’s eulogy that Will Jarrett delivered; it was as if Will was standing there with us.
We then went into Maria’s Garden and spread their ashes around a rose bush.
Swen and Eva had a plaque created with Hedy and Bill picture on it and we put it by the rose bush.
Once back
in Maria’s apartment, we had a wonderful dinner. We continued to talk about old times, traveling, showing pictures and yes, we solved all the world problems. If only the world would now listen to us.
Around 9:30 pm Kirsten and I were exhausted, and we started back to our hotel.
Back in our room, Kirsten started planning tomorrow.
Good night
