Well we got up early again today, had packed last night, and surprise surprise could hardly fit the puzzle that is my suitcase back together... have not bought much but I had spent more time packing it at home so it fit better... will have to work on it before the plane ride.
Uneventful metro ride to Montparnasse station found the line our train was leaving from after confirming with the information desk how we were to do this. The train ride was 3 hours from Paris to Dol de Bretagne, then an half an hour from there to the entrance of the Mont! All I can say is when Mont St. Michel came into view after the bus driver told us where to look the entire bus said a collective OOOOOOHHHHHHH, it was so beautiful, it is hard to describe, but it was amazing to see it that first time. It is so picturesque and a romantic place, I must have taken at least a hundred photos after we arrived and started walking around of just doorways, the street, etc... the history is very old, as a fortress this was never taken during the 100 years war which
is really saying something!
After we found our hotel, it is the Hotel Du Guesclin, very easy to find as it is near the entrance. We settled into our rooms, Joseph and I have the smallest but very nice room with 2 twin beds and bathroom with shower. Both of the other rooms are decorated so quaintly and someone mentioned they had never stayed in a hotel with "character" before but this definitely has that in a good way! Very clean with a very nice and helpful staff. We then found the Abbey and toured it, I rented the audio guide and enjoyed hearing the history and about the architecture, the first church built here was over 1000 years ago! It really is history built upon history at places like this, I love it!
After touring the Abbey I had a tasteless and overpriced pizza in a tourist trap of a tiny restaurant, but the owner was very nice! Joseph had a hamburger and small fries, the others had pizza also.
We went back to the hotel and took a break, I laid down and immediately fell asleep for 2 hours, woke up and went back to
sleep. Must have been tired! at about 7 went next door and the others were ready to go for a walk along the ramparts so we all went, great views of the sea, by the way, all of our rooms overlook the sea, we are really enjoying the view. Hopefully, will post some of these pictures. We took our time and took lots of pictures, the hordes that had blocked the streets from the tour buses have all left now so we have the place to ourselves which is really relaxing after being around crowds for most of the day.
Back at the hotel now and ready for bed, it is almost 10 but it is still very light out here, it has been very hard to get adjusted to the time change for me this trip. I think it staying light so long has thrown me off even more than the jet lag... at least that is what I'm guessing.
Will have Joseph upload some pics for me to share! Tomorrow we get on a bus at 8:45 am to take us to Pontorson to hop on the train to Bayeux, they are having a Medieval Festival there this weekend
and we will be taking a full day D-Day Tour on Sunday, will return to Paris on Monday and get on the plane Tuesday. Happy 4th of July if I can't post again till after!!
P.S. I enjoyed seeing the guys beating the eggs for the omelets in person! so cool to see it live after you've seen it so many times on TV.... hopefully you can see the video I took.
