Our last market in Nyons! It was as busy and colourful as usual. We bought a few gifts to bring home and a minimal amount of food to cover us until Sat morning when we depart. Some pottery purchased for our new kitchen may prove to be a problem when we come to pack our bags for home but it was great value & looks gorgeous. When we bought our baguettes, the lovely lady who sells them asked Ced if he wanted to buy a sweet pastry called a “sacristan” as he has bought at least one every Thurs from her. He was upset that I wouldn’t let him buy one as we still had quite a bit of sweet stuff to finish off. She no longer loves him!! Tomorrow we’re heading to the Gorges de ... read more

After plenty of entertaining and socializing in the last week, we opted for a quiet day. When walking around the town this morning, we discovered that an 8 day international pétanque (boules) championship, called “Les 8 Jours de la Ville de Nyons” is starting this Friday night. It must be important as they are offering huge prize money…maybe we should enter after all the practice we’ve had at Margie & Rod’s place in Katoomba?? This afternoon we did some shopping, wrote & sent off some postcards and relaxed with a sorbet at Miss Maple’s Salon du Thé, very close to our abode. On Sat 28th we head to Italy… we’ve been reflecting on just how fast almost 6 weeks of our holiday have flown by!... read more

Decided that today would be a good day to do some entertaining so instead of going out to lunch with Dawn, Michel & Diane as planned, we headed to the local shops & supermarket and purchased lots of tasty items to have on the terrace of the apartment. There appears to be no end of beautiful sunny days at the moment so it was the perfect thing to do! After a long, relaxing lunch we headed into the Centre Historique. Michel deals in old books and we were anxious for him to have a look at an interesting book & antique place we’d discovered in a corner of the old square. Michel thought the owner had a very impressive stock of books, antiques, posters & paintings & he recalled seeing her at some of the book ... read more

We opted for a relatively quiet day today so spent the morning soaking up the sun on the terrasse of our unit. After a late lunch we spent some time availing ourselves of the free Wifi at the local tourist office and watching locals play a game of pétanque just outside. A drive through the mountains to La Motte Chalancon, about 35km from Nyons took us back through the wonderful Gorge de St May where the rock formations never cease to astound. Stopped briefly at St May so Chery could take some pics then headed through Rémuzat (a town we had previously visited) to La Motte Chalancon. It was yet another picture postcard village in the mountains with beautiful views of the mountains, vineyards & olive plantations below. Its local church, Notre Dame de L’Annonciation, first ... read more

Another market day in Nyons but a first experience for Geoff & Chery. We bought loads of beautiful fresh food to consume over the period they’re here and Chery purchased a few gifts…she’s really loving the shopping here! We revisited the Centre Historique with them, including the Pont Roman & the climb to the top of the hill to Calvary Place, a lovely peaceful square at the summit of the town.... read more

Another day, another market…or so we thought! We were keen to visit the town of Vinsobres and thought that there was a market there on Mondays. The info must have been out of date as the village, whilst very pretty and in a lovely area, was completely dead. Even the church and the impressive protestant temple were closed! We wandered around for a while then headed back to Nyons for a coffee and lunch. We had another game of tennis in the late afternoon, managing to get it in just before there was a shower of rain.... read more

Today is tinged with a bit of sadness as we were unable to attend the family celebration for Pauline’s 90thbirthday held this afternoon at her niece Tricia’s house. We spoke to Pauline yesterday and she sounded in excellent form! Arlette invited us to participate this morning in a French/English speaking group of which she is a member. They meet each Sunday morning in a coffee shop in Nyons. They were a very lovely bunch of people…mainly French as well as a lady from England & 2 New Zealanders. It was helpful to be able to speak casually to sympathetic people who are all trying to learn either French or English. Exploring the area around here always results in pleasant surprises. After purchasing a few items at the Provencal market, we made a picnic lunch and headed ... read more

This morning we took advantage of the free wifi offered at the Tourist Office in Nyons. The wifi in the apartment is costing 3€ for 100Mb so it’s a bit too easy to rack up a big bill. We caught up on bills and emails and enquired about a place for Geoff & Chery. The only place available was up an incredibly steep hill in the old town. I think everything will be fine here but if not, there is a little hotel to fall back on. The Museum of Archaeology, the Museum of the Olive Tree (part of the Coopérative de Nyonsais) and a bit of wine and gift shopping filled up our afternoon. Both museums had interesting information about the local area – excellent fossils, mineral specimens & artefacts at the former & fascinating ... read more

As it was a lovely, cool sunny day we decided on another game of tennis. We played from 11am to noon and then visited a large bakery a little bit out of town where they have a great selection of bread and some excellent cakes & pastries. Had a quiet afternoon trying to sort out some accommodation for Geoff & Chery who arrive for a short stay next week…we think it might be a bit tight for four of us in our place. I also tried to paint the mountain we can see from our apartment but I wasn’t really pleased with the result! Tomorrow is Patrimoine Day in France so lots of places have free entry. We think we’ll check out some places in Nyons that we still haven’t visited such as the Museum of ... read more

Informations du jour de Cedric. Caroline est temporairement "blogged out" Another Thursday already, another sunny day and another mega marche day in Nyons. Before shopping for our weekly legumes, fruits, pains etc, we enjoyed a coffee and a chat - in French & English - with our host and friend Arlette Moutin. We had a late lunch, sat in the sun on the terrasse , then went for a walk to Le Jardin des Aromes (garden of aromatic plants) by the riverside in Nyons. We went here a couple of weeks ago on a very hot afternoon and didn't really appreciate this very beautiful garden. That's all folks!... read more
