Woke to another glorious blue sky day. We are finding it hard to believe that we have been so lucky in finding our 2012 summer even if we have had to wait until September. This lovely weather seems to be all across France and England but a quick check on the forecast says that the southern part of France should be great for at least the next 10 days but the UK will not fare as well. At a roasting 31 degrees today we won’t be too upset if it the temperature drops by a couple of degrees. It can get quite hot in a Tandy. Had to cover my shoulders for the scooter ride today as the sun got me a little yesterday and even hotter today. We went west along the island to ... read more

Early (ish – we are on holiday !) start to the day as we were visiting the lovely market in La Flotte which is mornings only and very busy. There are two excellent fish stalls but unfortunately we don’t recognize many varieties of fish on sale and also have the problem of not wanting to prepare anything too ‘fish smelly’ in the Tandy. I decided to take the easy option and buy sea bass. The first stall didn’t have any (I discovered this only after accidentally jumping the queue to the indignation of the French lady at the front). The second stall did so I pointed at a nice plump fish and asked for it to be filleted. Oops really should have checked the price first. So expensive I am not going to say here how ... read more

I only realised as I sat down to type this that we came to La Flotte (and from Coulon) on the same date last year. Hadn’t realised how closely our route this time is taking us to last September’s but it will change soon as we are heading ever southwards. As last year we realised we needed to get to the campsite early if we were to get a pitch. There are lots of campsites on the Ile de Ré but we wanted the same one we used last year, La Grainetiere at La Flotte as we really liked it and it’s location. http://www.la-grainetiere.com/ We had originally thought we might spend a night in La Rochelle on the way here as Bob had found an aire which would have allowed us to spend the day ... read more
Rivedoux-Plage - so typical of Ile de Re. Love the colours of this island.
Mussel or are they oyster beds at Rivedoux-Plage
There was a notice saying 'no swimming' but to be honest would have been tricky anyway as water was strangely absent

Our campsite : La Grainetiere in La Flotte, Île de Ré: Made an extra effort today and got going by a more reasonable 10:15. Concerned that the Ile de Re is a very popular spot and that we needed to get to campsite as early as we could to make sure we got a pitch. The drive was not far, only 60 miles but we needed to stop for a weekly shop on the way. Pleasant drive through the countryside, past fields full of sunflowers and corn. We easily spotted a Carrefour and stopped to stock up the fridge so we now have enough food to keep us going for several days. We’ve visited Ile de Re twice before but it is such a lovely place to be. We crossed over the bridge, from near La ... read more
