Despite what many of you will know about me and my thoughts on camping, I'm currently lying in a sleeping bag inside a tent in a campsite in France. I can hear the rain dropping down onto the roof as I lay here trying to get to sleep. Someone told me once that camping is meant to reset your body's natural body-clock, but I must be an exception to the rule. I can hear the snuffled sounds of my brother and nephews as they are sleeping, but I'm still awake at 00:30. Normally I fall asleep whilst watching TV, but I haven't got one here, so I've been trying to fall sleep whilst watching a few videos I've got on my phone, but the resources are limited. This morning we woke up really early to go to Paris...but we still missed the train :-( Instead we spent the day wondering around some local towns including Compiegne and Pierrefonds, but first we went into Soissons. Soissons is one of the most ancient towns in France, so there were lots of cool old buildings to look at, including a huge cathedral. It was also full of gorgeous looking bakeries and I got to try my very first pain-au-chocolat! It was delicious, though I was a bit messy with it :-) We spent an hour or so just wandering around the town and looking at the local market stalls. It's not always easy to convince our kids to discover some culture. Since they're so young, they would rather spend their time on playgrounds ;-) But when we told them we were going to visit Merlin's Castle, they were very excited. And when we mentioned the rumors of a dragon inside the castle, they definitely wanted to search the dragon! The official name of the castle is "Château de Pierrefonds" (Castle of Pierrefonds). But it is better known as Merlin's Castle because it served as Camelot for the BBC series Merlin. Some say it's the most beautiful fortified castle in France. Pierrefonds itself is a rather small village of which the main attraction is the castle itself. It has a nice center where we strolled around and eat a little bit. In this way we were ... read more
