The best things in life don’t come on a plate. Or précuit, as the French have it. So we made sure that yesterday we did all we could to earn our wonderful day out. A friend here in Laroque works for EDF, and so has access to their mountain refuge high up in the Pyrenees Orientales for any friends and family he might like to take there. He’s been planning a summer break up there for the children and teenagers who are members of our local MJC- youth centre: this is the week when it's happening. Teenagers need to be catered for. He reckoned that about 150 meals worth of food needed to be transported up the mountain to see the holiday through, and he didn’t think the young people would be able to manage it ... read more

The other night I went out for a shared meal. Our choir was celebrating a successful year and saying ‘Goodbye’ till September. And as usual on these occasions, every single person brought enough food to serve about a dozen people, so there was every incentive to be greedy. Apart from plates of cold meats and hams, roasted pepper salads and radishes from someone’s garden, I ate a wonderful tortilla, rich as fondant, full of the flavours of the tasty fats and herbs it had been cooked in. Our Spanish member contributed that. There was a pissaladière, a tarte à l’oignon, an almost spicy tomato and mustard tart, some fishy salads….and all kinds of things I was getting too full to sample. Of course at one point, the talk turned to cooking. C’est la France….. I suppose ... read more

June the 21st has come and gone. Midsummer Day? The Solstice? Father’s Day? Well, yes, all these things of course, but here in France it’s la Fête de la Musique, and a day I have come to love. It’s been around in France since 1982, when it was promoted by Jack Lang, the then Minister of Culture, who was himself following the lead offered by the French equivalent of Radio 3, France Musique. The idea then, as now, was that on this day, musical events of all kinds should be freely available to the public. They don’t pay, and performers aren’t paid. It took off. In community after community, all over the country, the day is given over to musical fun. Small children from the local École de Musique squawking away on their half-sized violins, the ... read more

We've been off-line for 7 long weeks, hence the long silence. You really don't want to know the long drawn out saga of bungling and non co-operation involving the three main players: France Telecom, NordNet and us. So I won't tell you. But for the last fortnight, we've enjoyed having visitors from England, and have had the greatest fun being tourists in our own adopted region. Here then, are a few picture postcards from the South of France... read more

Every now and then, over the last however-long-it-is that I’ve been doing these blogs, you get a blow-by-blow account of Work In The Kitchen. And you have no idea how often we work in the kitchen and don’t blog about it. You must think we’re the laziest and most incompetent pair ever, because not once have we suggested that we’re almost done. Well, this is why….. On Monday, we had our plan for the week. (a) Put up a steel grid for hanging pans and tools from, as in our Harrogate house. (b) Test and then buy suitable wall coverings to disguise the astonishing lino covering the bottom half of one wall. (c) Apply paint to several remaining walls. Here we are, late Wednesday, and we’ve only just finished (a). In Harrogate, Malcolm popped the ... read more

We’re big fans of Pipototal. If they were alive today, so would those creators of entirely credible, yet utterly incredible machines and contraptions, W. Heath Robinson and Rowland Emett. We first came across them last July in Lavelanet the night the entire town turned itself over to festival and merry making because it was one of the towns chosen as a Tour de France departure point. That evening, as darkness descended, we followed an increasingly zany procession of fantastical vehicles, only very loosely based on planes, bicycles, limousines, bubble cars, driven by the acrobats, street artists and clowns of Pipototal. Well, their centre of gravity is l’Aiguillon, a village very near here, and on Saturday, they were celebrating their 20th birthday. So we had to join the party. The bad news was that the Saturday was ... read more

I know it was only yesterday I posted a blog, but well, how often to YOU go for a country walk with a donkey and a goat (and a few humans too)? No, we don’t either, so I thought it was worth sharing. Henri’s the neighbour who offered us the donkey manure, and we’ve struck up quite a friendship. He said he’d like to take us, with his wife Brigitte, to see the fields of wild daffodils up on the Plantaurel. When we got to our rendezvous, the donkey field, he’d rounded up a few other friends. Valentine (the donkey) and Penelope (the goat), had apparently conveyed their wish to be included too. We waved goodbye to Romeo and Ulysse (the other 2 donkeys), and Suzie the cow, who disapproved noisily at being left behind. Then ... read more

Well, I threatened some time ago, but this time..... I've started using a different format for my blog. Travel Blog's been a great way of me keeping a 'diary' of my travels, but now that our life in France has settled down to more of a routine, I think a different format might be better. So if you'd like to continue to keep in touch through my blogs, you'll now find them at: http://mtlaw.wordpress.com/ And if you have been .....thanks for reading ... read more

Back in England at this time of year, it’s daffodil time. Maybe not in most people’s gardens yet, but certainly in every florist, supermarket and garden centre there’ll be boxes and boxes of bunches on sale. Classy offerings with leaves as well, or bargain basement 3-bunches-for- £1. From February to April, I make sure the house is rarely without a few jugs full of blooms in nearly every room in the house. I love them so much that I get quite upset when they first appear, because that means they’ll soon be over. How weird is that? And here? Well, people seem to like daffodils too. They’re poking through the soil in many gardens round and about, and there are wild ones too, in the woods. Buying them though, is a different matter. The best chance ... read more
