Unlike Montpellier which has no Roman or Greek heritage, Nîmes has a very rich Roman history. The first thing that struck us when we started walking away from the gare was that there must be a mandate for all cities to have rows of trees lining the boulevards that lead away from the stations. This town was no exception. The Arena of Nîmes The biggest difference is that this tree lined lane leads you to one of the best preserved Roman sites we have seen to date: The Nîmes Arena. It might even be older than the Colosseum in Rome. It has the best information signs of all the sites we saw in France with many of them in English as well as French. It told us not only that the arena was still in use ... read more

We didn’t plan to go to Béziers twice but, as with all good holidays, not everything goes according to plan. The City tour As I probably have said before, Montpellier is a great town in itself but is also well located for visiting other places. Béziers is one of those. A sort train ride dropped us off right at the edge of the old city. One of the things Google maps don’t give you is an idea of what the hills are like. I should have been suspicious after looking at a picture of the cathedral on the internet. We knew where the tourist information office was located and made a beeline for it. Uphill almost all the way. But they were very helpful and our visit to the old city was very successful. It started ... read more

Well, back in Montpellier for 23 nights. Whatever will we do to fill our days here in the south of France? We have already visited many of the sights in Montpellier and know our way around the old town. We don’t even need our map (most of the time). Time to get out train schedules and visit some of the towns in the area. Sète We had already visited Sète (see previous blog) but didn’t have dinner at either of the places we had identified. Peter and Bev had recommended the Gourmet Walking Tour which is run by a Canadian woman who has lived in France for 30 years. Hmmmmm. Food, wine, desserts… Sounded good to us. We met up with Nancy and another couple at the Grand Hotel and off we went. Nancy was able ... read more

Europe » France » Languedoc-Roussillon » Collioure May 14th 2017

I realized after I sent yesterday's blog that I didn't make it clear exactly where Collioure is (i.e. where I am). It is a French town on the Mediterranean Sea right near the border with Spain, i.e. just north of Barcelona. It is a cute little resort town populated largely by French tourists, although one does hear the occasional Spanish or English. I can definitely see the appeal of spending a relaxing vacation here - currently I am sitting at a bayside cafe, sipping white wine, and enjoying the breeze - but the reason I came here was to visit the Salvador Dali sights that are just across the border in Spain. Dali (see photo) was a surrealist artist who was born and lived most of his life nearby and there are two museums about an ... read more

Today I drove from Carcassonne to Collioure via back roads. I followed Rick Steves's advice about enjoying the rugged countryside and stopping at a ruined castle. It's true that there were some dramatic views (see photo). But I'm not sure the castle was worth the effort expended to see it. The castle I looked at is called Peyrepertuse and it was important six or seven hundred years ago. Abandoned, it fell into ruin and then was partially restored in the last century (see photo). Unfortunately the restoration did not include a user-friendly path to climb (see photo). I guess I have to say I was glad to see Peyrepertuse but I think its chief feature is that it makes one appreciate how well-done Carcassonne is. I drove on from there to Collioure, France and just had ... read more

On the train The trip from Lyon to Montpellier was easy. The French train system makes travel pretty easy once you figure out how to buy the tickets. The signs in the station are very clear, the notifications of the next station and how long it will be before you get there take the guess work out of travel. The Housesit We met Sheila in the station and had a short walk to their apartment. Very convenient. Kevin was out picking up some groceries. Even more convenient. We met Mr. Darcy who, in typical cat fashion, couldn’t really care less who we were. After lunch at a lovely outdoor restaurant, while Sheila did some last minute work related tasks before their two month trip, Kevin took us on a walk around the old city. It’s not ... read more

Today I was on the road for over four hours, driving from San Sebastián in Spain to Carcassonne in the region of southern France known as the Languedoc. Carcassonne is famous for its well-preserved medieval walls (see photo). The fortifications are especially impressive up close (see photo), but tourists and school groups breach them regularly these days (see photo). I followed Rick Steves's walking tour and paid extra to walk along the top of the walls. It was fun to do, with good views, but last year's visit to the city walls of Dubrovnik is still my favorite. One of the Carcassonne sights is a gothic church where St. Dominic once preached. It is a lovely space and, when I was there, a quartet of men was singing Schubert's Ave Maria (see photo). After dinner I ... read more

We are now tucked up for Xmas in Castelnaudary against the quay alongside a busy road. We have had to put up one way window film and net curtains to stop the nosy people peering into the boat! Castelnaudary is a great little town with good shopping, bars and restaurants. Within 2 minutes walk we have excellent medical facilities which we have been utilising quite a bit as we seem to be falling apart as winter rolls on. The weather has been superb with mostly sunny days although the wind down here does seem to blow straight out of the Arctic. There is a fairly active social life here this winter with a good mix of live-aboards and lots of planned events such as pub nights quiz nights, bake- offs, wine tasting etc. We have just ... read more

I wrote the blog today on the train between Montpellier and Marseilles, on the way to Nice. Sadly, it has been lost to cyberspace, so here I go again. Yesterday morning, I took a very fast train from Barcelona to Montpellier. Montpellier is the 8th largest city in France, and the third largest French city on the Mediterranean. It is also the quickest growing city in France over the past 25 years. This may be because it is home to three universities as well as three higher education institutions, which would explain the amount of young folk in the city. Anyone who reads my facebook statuses would already know how taken I was with the beauty of this city. It certainly isn't as well known as the other places I have visited during this trip, but ... read more
