Geo: 47.4104, 0.981122 After leaving our airport hotel, we met our friends Liz and Darrol and their daughters Chloe and Ciara at Charles de Gaulle Airport and headed for the Loire Valley, south of Paris. We drove straight to Chateau Chambord, which is the largest château in the Loire Valley. The chateau was built to serve as a hunting lodge for Francois I of France, who maintained his royal residences at Chateau de Blois and Chateau d'Amboise. Chambord was constructed between 1519 and 1547.After viewing Chambord, we drove to our accommodation at Amboise. The large home we are staying in has a troglodyte cave, which is our bedroom. The room is literally carved out of the rock cliff. Off to see some more chateau tomorrow.... read more

No biking today. The rain was persistent and heavy all day, so we decided to go looking for a shopping mall as we were all short on something warm to wear! I spent the morning at a local salon as there had been no time for a haircut in the lead-up to our trip, and I was badly in need. It was not so easy describing what I wanted in French, but the hairdresser and I did pretty well in the end, although the term "Feathered" as it applies to hair was one she struggled with! I was able to use pictures and gesture to help her understand, and in return she helped me with a few French phrases. Our trip to the mall was successful and Isabel managed to find jeans and a great jacket ... read more

The drive to Azay-le-Rideau last night was an easy but slightly monotonous one with a detour through Chartre to find a restaurant recommended to us (but sadly closed last night) followed by a stop at the most enormous Carrefour supermarket I have been to. We ended up buying a hot roast chicken and other bits and pieces to consume in the car en route, as it was getting late. A quick phone call to Patric at the lovely Hotel Biencourt reassured us that we would have a room when we got to Azay-le-Rideau and sure enough, when we pulled up outside well after 10pm, he actually came out of the house opposite in pristine blue striped pyjamas to show us where to park, and to help us get settled. He had clearly been asleep yet was ... read more

Perfect Way to Spend a Day I do not quite remember when the information about Loire Castles came to my notice. I know that I wanted to visit them (a couple) the previous year, and that this year I bought a guided bus tour to three Loire Castles with FranceTourisme. I chose the company because of the price, it was 110 Euros per person as compared to 170 Euros with Visitscope (tours in Russian). I supposed this tour would be in English, but the language did not matter too much. The Chateaux de la Loire are part of UNESCO World Heritage. There is a very long list of them, and it is, I guess, possible to comfortably visit 3-5 of them within a single day. If one has a car, or a bike, or a motorcycle, ... read more

A lie in – well until 7.30am, the plan was to have a day off and a long lie in and were wide awake at silly o’clock. Needless to say Woolly slept and lazed the whole day away. Although a small site, Camping des Illettes is basic but has everything you need (well except Wifi), and at 24 Euro (approximately £20.10 GBP) for two nights it was good value for money, Motorhomes would only have to pay an extra 2.50 Euro a night for hook up so a good deal for all. Woolly says – I was conserving my energy, after Jo had cooked a big breakfast for all of us I found a nice comfy chair to sit in the sun and watch them do all the clothes washing, empty Oliver out and resort his ... read more

Chenonceaux. I was sorry to leave Bordeaux. There seemed to be so much to see that was unavailable to us on this trip. An excuse for a return, if we needed one. Today would feature another 300km ride north, with a non-remarkable pit-stop or two, heading for Tours. The Chateau Chenonceau straddles the Cher River, near the town of Chenonceaux, about 30km east of Tours. Dating to the 1400's, it was the private residence of a wealthy miller but over the course of history came into the possession of royalty. Cindy detailed some of the amusing, amorous escapades of some of the royals which led to various chatelaines and other occupants over the centuries. Simply put, it served as the personal residence of five French queens, including infamous Catherine de Medici, with whose affections one was ... read more

We feel terrible about falling behind on the blogs, it's been a rough couple of days (more on that in a sec). I forgot to mention on last night's blog that we did laundry before leaving the apartment in Paris! For the most part everyone still line dries their clothes, but this apartment features a washer and dryer in one (why don't we have these in the US?). They are very very tiny so not a lot of clothes at one time but it certainly did the job. The only downside is that the dryer is actually heated with water around the cylinder. I know this because in the morning when I pulled out the clothes, the jeans were wrinkled beyond recognition. I tried to "re-toss" on 'dry only' and heard water (slight panic attack) and ... read more

Happy Birthday to me. I suppose this was a milepost as I turned 60 today and that monumental achievement was the whole reason I got to choose the itinerary for this trip, but it really seemed like just any other day to me when we woke up. As far as I was concerned, everyday of this vacation was special because I was not at work and I was seeing all kinds of new things that really interested me. I was truly thinking that this region of France might be just as fascinating to me as Bavaria. After waking up in our budget hotel we took nice hot showers before packing up the car. As our trip was drawing to a conclusion we wanted to squeeze in as much as possible today. With New Year's Day following ... read more

27/10/2012 As per usual for the Rotary trips organised here, I was up at 5am in order to be at Angular station by the 6:15am cut-off time for the bus trip to Paris, where I would be spending the next 3 days during my second-to-last rotary trip during my exchange. Somehow making the bus in time, with mark taking me there, I jumped in, and set off with around a third of the exchangers that’d be coming along to Paris. The bus trip there was loud and long, but finally around 2:30 we arrived in Paris at our first stop, the ‘Castle of Versailles’. This is one of the most famous Castles in France, and was the centre of political power in France from the late 1600’s. The royal family moved here after the start of ... read more

Our time in Paris has been very busy. When we originally booked our accommodation we had been unable to get the first night at the B&B we preferred so as a result the first night was spent in a very ordinary hotel in what resembled a cramped dusty attic. Fortunately it was only for the one night and we were gone first thing in the morning. Where we moved into our preferred B&B appartment which had plenty of space, was very homely and had everything we needed. After we had seen the Eifel Tower and Palace of Versailles. John, Hayley and Carolyn were really wearing Tanya and I down with the question "So what day are we going to Disneyland?" and John was no longer accepting the answer "Disneyland is closed today". So we thought we ... read more
