When we left Suerre we only had a short day of 30 miles, made even shorter as we had a current to help move us along to our destination, Chalon-sur-Saone. This area is a beautiful one as we passed numerous fields of crops and attractive residential homes. This is the first that we are seeing commercial barges again as we saw some filling up at some of the sand piles that are located in this section of the river. When we arrived at the marina in Chalon-sur-Saone it appeared to be quite full as they had us go to their waiting pontoon, but fortunately only about 20 minutes later they found us a permanent location. As we were coming into town we saw numerous tents all around in any “open area” so we figured there must ... read more

This entry by Tom. Pretty sure the whole group skipped the hotel breakfast here. It wasn’t cheap at €13 and this time I got a look--just okay. So I went around the corner and up the street to a bakery and brought back some pastries and an Orangina to the room. The gang had gathered at the rear of the hotel to get ready and load the van. It was another cool morning but it felt like it would get warm sooner rather than later. Caroline and I were the last to come down, but not by much. We decided to check out the Saturday morning market next to hotel with Donna, Luce and Steve. We picked up some large apricots and a local variety of peaches, flat peaches. I’d seen these before but had never ... read more

An early start Saturday morning - 7:30am. Why? We were on our way to a vide-grenier (garage sale) at Gergy before having lunch at Chalon-sur-Saône. Neville drove a scenic route, which was beautiful, sojourning through quaint villages. Look, Madame! A brocante! Where? Stop! What a treat we were in for as Neville pulled to a stop opposite a church (complete with cemetery) at the village of Corberone. A hand written sign at the gate showed us the way in…we shall let the photos tell the story! Madame Smith came away happily with a mustard pot and a bigger pot (useful for something!) Neville found some glasses, while Mabel and Jan just marveled at the collections. But Neville, we still need to go to Gergy. A further drive along narrow roads, through more quaint villages, past wheat ... read more

The mooring at Fragnes was lovely – electricity, showers, water and a really friendly and helpful young woman in the office. The wi-fi was really unreliable, but we set up camp for a few days so we could do some jobs and celebrate Mike's 30th. The following day was Mike's 30th and I woke early to make him breakfast in bed, champagne and present him with his card and present. I'd managed to lose him for a while the previous day whilst I bought him something and had made his card ages before on a sunny day on the river – it was a map of france with our route so far and some of the highlights of the trip. I was very pleased with it and so was Mike … I'd even drawn on the ... read more

Mike and I prepared to head off on the sunday morning. A warm wind was blowing quite strongly into the harbour so we gave a big shove off the pontoon, assisted by Chris and Phil who told us they'd be following on soon. After about half an hour on the river Saone, which was far bigger than I'd imagined, we had to put the roof back up because the wind was making it flap about too much and was threatening to blow me away. Another half an hour later and there were white horses on the surface of the river, I'd had to climb out and bring in all our boat hooks and Ozzy was getting thrown about. Surely this wasn't right? We got a text from Chris and Phil saying how wild it was and ... read more
