France & Spain Sept – Dec 2022 Wednesday 14th September 2022 We are off!! At last!! We had decided to drive to Spain a) because Chris wanted to see his brother in Chassignolles, France b) his cousin Lynn was in Montpellier and c) hire cars have suddenly gone ridiculously expensive in Spain! We left early so that we had chance to visit another of his brothers in Lewes and duly arrived at the ferry port, Newhaven. Uneventful crossing – it was just so nice being back on a ferry! Watched the sunset over the sea just before we docked at Dieppe where we drove to Ibis Budget Hotel (secure parking with hotel if booked 10 Euros) 124611 -124808 197miles Thursday 15th September 2022 Left hotel and had uneventful drive to Bonneval where we parked up outside ... read more

It was our intention to make an early start this morning as we had a long drive to do and wanted to spend some time at the Viaduct Millau. As it worked out, neither of us woke before 8am so it was nearly 9am before we managed to hit the road. We are now the proud owners of an electric kettle so we are able to have cups of tea (with English tea bags) whenever we stop off for the night and can make a flask of tea to take with us on our travels. A nice cup of tea is definitely what you need before a trip like this. Neal started off this morning driving down the motorway to Brive and then we started on the smaller D roads that would take us across the ... read more

Phew! We made it to Clermont-Ferrand. Yes we now have a car and are hopefully very mobile. The day started with some nervous tension just hoping all would work out because this is the first day of a four month drive around Europe. The first part was easy just catch the train to Lyon Airport. The phone call we made three days earlier to arrange a pick up seemed straight forward but it still needed a follow up call to let the car people know we were waiting. In no time at all we were whisked away to the collection place and there was our new Peugeot 207SW ready and waiting. What a lovely sight. With all the documents signed and a quick lesson on the workings of the GPS we were ready for the BIG ... read more

So I am here in Clermont-Ferrand. It is a beautiful city surrounded by a chain of dormant volcanos. I am couchsurfing at a guy named Ali's flat. It is pretty sweet, like an oversized bachelor. Anywyas, after 4 days in France, living amongst these wondeous people, I can safely say that I can generalize here. Almost eveything you've ever heard about the French is true; they are fast, pushy, crazy drivers, doused in perfume, motorcycle fanatics and heavy smokers and drinkers of wine. They are not, however, snooty, rude, stuck-up or unwilling to give aid in the form of directions. They are also not as bureaucratic as I'd heard, which is great. So that's that. Hopefully over time, I can post some more French people generalities but or now, I have a nine hour train to ... read more

We decided this beautiful, sunny morning, having no set agenda for the day, to head back to Puy-de-Dome region and visit Clermont-Ferrand. It was quite an interesting visit because we had no idea what to look for or even where to go. Heading to the "centre ville" is always a good idea but maybe not always a good idea in a big city with lots of traffic! We did okay, though. As we were entering the city, you come down a very long, steep hill and it was from this vantage point that we saw the entire city....the huge, black cathedral stuck out like a sore thumb! Found a place to park in a parkade just beside a main square. Lo and behold! It was a shopping mall that we parked under! Surprisingly enough we didn't ... read more

June 25, 26, 2008 Auvergne Region, France Our journey from Geneva took us across a small mountain range through some very beautiful countryside to Clermont-Ferrand. We were pleasantly surprised. This is a very nice city known as the geographic center of France. The city is in some very nice farmland and crops of all kinds are grown here. We took our usual “walk about” from our hotel to the town center. Bad idea !! The start of a major summer SALE had begun and every store had everything ( almost ) at 50% off ( off what we don’t know, but 50% off just the same ) The whole town was very busy !! The centerpiece of the town is the usual Cathedral and this one is spectacular. I still find it very hard to believe ... read more

Friday 16th May Over breakfast Marion explained Owen's deprivations of the night before (in somewhat less heart-rending tone than he employed) to our hostess. She was incredibly embarrassed and sincerely contrite, apologising over and over again. In the end she cut our bill by a third, effectively not charging for the forgotten one. We decided we didn't want to brave the dog-visited city streets again so headed off for Clermont-Ferrand. The day was similar to Thursday, overcast with threatening sky. Otherwise the scenery was also similar to yesterday. The main differences were that we made a couple of steep climbs and in the mountainous region there was quite a bit of wild brush; but most of the way was lined by flat fields of crops. More toll roads. I think we've used at least one every ... read more

I as in Clermont-Ferrand "Michelin Capital" (pop. 140,000 - night-life pop - 8) for the 3rd EGEE User Forum, basically when all of the people who are actually using the technology get together, explain how they are using it and outline progress and issues. There were some interesting demos there as well. I chaired the session of Finance and Multimedia on the first day and gave a summary presentation on the final day's plenary session. The city itself was quite nice, very clean and visually beautiful, there was just no one around after 10:30pm. Coming from Italy and speaking with another Italian, it was quite a shock to not hear a car horn for a week straight, I haven't been able to hear myself think like that in a long time. Travel woes: This seems to ... read more

To put this entry in context, I am sitting in what should be my room, but it currently has no food in it, and there are assorted piles of laundry strewn around the floor and furniture. Yes, the student's week can do that to you, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this abysmal state. I should try to conquer it, and get things back in order, but I need to charge my Ipod before I can function. The Soiree Beaujolais is a big event for the French. The third Thursday of November is dedicated to the unveiling of the new wine for the year- the Beaujolais, and student's week is timed to fit this event perfectly. After spending more time this week with alcohol than in class, it's easy to understand why I feel like ... read more
