Construction continues... Europe » Finland » Helsinki By jessie_eliciaMay 7th 2007Jessie SmithOk ok, so many requests for pictures of the construction... here are a few. We are almost done the first half. The truck will move it on Wednesday and we will start the second half. Next Tuesday we will have both halves ready to go and be on our way to Turku! It's going a lot more smoothly than anticipated and I keep waiting for something to go wrong. It's light until after 9pm so we're working in three shifts... morning, afternoon, and evening. This way there are always 6 people working at a time. Hopefully next time I write we will have a finished produc... read more

Today is the end of my impromptu four day weekend. We were all set to work through the weekend on the Treehouse project but we were too efficient on Thursday and Friday, leaving ourselves short of work until more wood is delivered. Also, the school has been closed for the past two days due to the Wappu (pronounced vap-poo) celebrations. Wappu descends from Labour Day traditions and is a huge event for students but is celebrated by all. The actual Wappu day is May 1st but the partying starts up to a week ahead of that. On April 30th at 6pm everyone brings bottles of sparkiling wine and heads into Helsinki to the statue of Havis Amanda (Manta). The statue is cleaned by representatives of the student guilds and they place the Teekari cap on ... read more

So this was a pretty exciting week for me. We finally got to the construction stage in our design-build project at school. We got the lumber delivered and spent thursday and friday cutting the 2x2 lumber to length. I've been working a lot to get the drawings done so haven't been out much in the past couple weeks. We get more wood delivered on Wednesday so we can continue cutting and start building. We should be done construction by the 16th so that could be my next post. Cross your fingers that everything goes smoothly for us! Here are also some pictures from a bonfire we had at school a couple weekends ago. We were on campus at the edge of the sea. I brought marshmallows and David brought chocolate and cinnamon crackers (no graham ... read more

10c, fine No expectations and no plans - Finland was an open book from the beginning. I knew little about Helsinki and my first encounter of a Finnish person was the Finnair hostesses saying ‘hey’ as I boarded the plane. Wow.. That’s really casual for an airline welcome, I was expecting a “welcome aboard.. blah blah blah”. Even the pilot came on the intercom and was like “hey…”. I thought Finnish people were just extremely laid back until I learnt that “hei” (pronounced: “hey”) means hello in Finnish. Wow.. Finland was cool and home to the ‘original’ hey - it was slightly weird having people say “hey” to you in a way that assumed you knew them. Anyhow.. enough hey! I was happy to be reunited with my bag at Helsinki airport. It spend a ... read more

Hellooo out there! Sorry for the delay in posting but I've been busy busy with my friends from Canada who came to visit. It was so awesome for them to come from all corners of Europe to help me celebrate my birthday. Morgan came from Switzerland after his semester finished before returning to Canada. Kristine was (is) on Easter holidays from school in England, and Richard was on Easter break from work in Ireland. I don't have too many pictures, I was too busy doing school work, organizing events, and having fun. The four of us squeezed into my tiny room at night, wall to wall like sardines for three nights. It's a good thing we all get along so well. The first day they were here we went to my campus for a quick ... read more

Moro! Piti avata tämmönen nyt sitten uutta matkaa varten! Eli Guatemalaan olen lähdössä, Flores nimiseen kaupunkiin. Flores on pienenpieni kaupunki Lago Petèn Itzà -järven keskellä! :) Palaan asiaan vielä ennen lähtöä!... read more

Hold the search party! Yes, I am still alive, still in Finland, but I can occasionally understand the locals now! I could make excuses for why I haven't written lately, but there's no good ones. It's just been on my 'to do' list for a very long while but never quite made it to the top until now. So, the Navy is well and truly over now (silent cheering) and life is far more comfortable. I'm still living in Helsinki, but I've got a new apartment (well, it was new in September) not too far from the city centre. Granted, it is in Kallio - another "ghetto" (albeit Scandinavian ghetto), but it's a lot nicer than my old apartment in Itäkeskus (the east centre), and I like to think that it's what's on the inside that ... read more

Hey everyone... This note's going to be short because I have to get up early in the morning to fly to Dublin. I'll spend the night there at Richard's house and the two of us will leave the next morning for Portugal! School has been very busy. I took a few hours last weekend to go to the Korkeasaari zoo and the Ateneum art museum. Other than that I have been working at school. The Zoo was really nice. It's on an island outside Helsinki and looks more like a farm than a zoo. It has all the same animals as regular zoos, but it was kind of wierd to see the lions and tigers and camels out in the snow. This zoo is also the location of the lookout tower built by the Wood Studio ... read more

So I got good news this week... after much deliberation by the professors, my design was chosen to be the one project built by the class and exhibited at the museum in Turku! We have started to work as a group to refine the design and will start doing material and joint studies next week. It's going to be amazing to have my own work displayed so prominently, I'm really looking forward to seeing the end result. To celebrate the end of the individual design phase of this project my professor Pekka rented a sauna for our class on an island called Uunisaari. It's apparently the best sauna in Finland. Most of us were brave and took turns running and jumping through a hole in the ice into the sea! It was really cold, but definitely ... read more
