Well, I made it! It was a long night of travelling, through Riga, Latvia and arriving in the morning in Helsinki. The time changed two more hours between Dublin and Helsinki so I lost the whole night. I arrived at the Helsinki-Vantaa airport to a warm welcome by friends of friends, Anne and Esa Suutala who were very kind to pick me up and deliver me to my new home. We first stopped at their apartment which overlooks the city and had coffee (kahvi) and breakfast (aamiainen). They gave me some brochures and maps about Espoo and Helsinki and did some quick research on mobile phones for me. I have finally arrived in Finland!!! I actually have been here for 2 full days now! I have kept myself very busy, hence me not getting this done earlier. I arrived Thursday Evening and was picked up by my Tutor Heli (here a tutor is someone who helps international students around the city and stuff like that) She has ended up becoming my life savor! She took me to my flat and showed me around a bit. We were going to meet the next day at 9am, in front of my building. I ended up going to bed early that night, it was a long day! So, here we are. Preparing for a trip around the planet which actually already started a few days back with a flight from London to Helsinki. Less than 5 hours to go for my first real flight, the AY097 from Helsinki to Singapore (via Bangkok) and then to Melbourne, Australia. Today we took a ferry out to Suomenlinna, a sea fortress built in 1748 just outside of Helsinki. Over the years, it has been under control of the Swedish, Russians, and Finnish. J is one half Finnish on his Mother's side. His family lived in Helsinki for a few months about 20 years ago and he attended a Finnish school where only a few teachers and students spoke English. Amazingly, he was able to make email contact with several of them and we arranged to meet. We spent a very enjoyable evening with two of his schoolmates (and one of their husbands). It was fun for me to hear their tales of 12 year old J in school! Sounds like he hasn't changed much. We arrived in Finland on a clear, cold day and departed Finland on a clear, cold day. Päätettiin laittaa tällainen blogi pystyyn, jotta vanhemmat/sukulaiset ja kaverit tietää missä ensi vuonna mennään. Säästää myös vaivaa, kun ei tarvitse erikseen lähettää sähköposteja ympäriinsä. Meillä on läppäri mukana, joten siihen on helppo naputella. Mä veikkaan, että verkkoa ei ole yhtä hyvin tarjolla Kolumbian sademetsissä, kuin esim, Espan puistossa. Joten jos blogi ei nyt joka päivä päivity, niin ei vielä kannata lähettää etsintäpartiota perään. Tarkoituksemme on siis lähteä vuoden pituiselle maailmanympärimatkalle. Geo: 60.1699, 24.9384What great place, arrived Saturday morning & Finnair bus takes you straight to town - central railway station - in less than 30mins for eur5.20 (they have Euro hurray). Was staying in Radisson Plaza Hotel which was incredibly near the station (which unusually is not a seedy area) but unfortunately my orientation was a bit skewed so lets just say I had a walking tour for an hour! Hotel was just by the National Theatre & Aaltonen's statue of poor old Aleksis Kivi, who died insane and impoverished before being acknowledged as Finland's greatest playwright. Very compact city so no harm orientate yourself (ahem), plus I couldn't have checked in til 2pm so that's precisely when I did, mind you the wind gave me pretty crazy looking hair & a red blotchy face, but ... read more

HELSINKI-FINLAND 16/9/06 Well we've hit our last Scandinavian Capital. And even more frightening the half way point of our trip! The drive to Helsinki was quiet to say the least everybody still catching up from the night before. There were some exciting moments though along the drive. We saw our first and only Moose today in the middle of the road, bold as brass! And they are big! The drive mainly on freeways but still traveling through some really dense forest. The trees in this place are beautiful and because we’ve come at the end of the season we’re able to see the autumn colours coming out as well! Laitan siis tämän matkapäiväkirjani aluilleen jo näin hyvissä ajoin; kuvastaa hyvin kuinka odottavalla mielellä täällä ollaan. Lentoliput ja Working Holiday viisumi on jo hommattu ja kaikenlaista informaatiota keräilty. Erityisesti pelottavista aussihämiksistä oon lukenu monen webbisivun verran. HUI! Pelottaa jo ajatella ensikohtaamista Huntsman hämiksen kanssa vaikkei se vaarallinen olekkaan, hiukan araknofobinen kun olen. Siitä pikkuannan pelottomuudesta jolla pitelin hämähäkkiä sormenpäässä ja ihailin isän kanssa kuinka se kauniisti kimalteli eri väreissä ei ole tietoakaan.
