...."they attacked Copenhagen and confiscated our naval fleet. So, in retaliation we built canal boats and hid them in these canal side sheds...", our guide quipped in perfect english. Christ, only two minutes into the netto boat tour and the Brits are already getting slated. There seemed to be a heavy French contingent on board so I countered their derisory glances with a sickly grin. Looking around, it looks as though it’s all turned out for the best because the ‘canal side sheds’ have now been turned into top spec offices going for over £1m a shot. Around the next corner and a little float towards the land, we saw the much maligned Little Mermaid. All I’d been told about this famous little statue prior to our visit was that it was highly disappointing, barely ... read more

Last night we took one of Copenhagen’s canary yellow buses to visit Steve’s friends, Mads, Mette and their little boy, Lauge, in their apartment in the Norrebro area. They live on the top floor of an apartment block which had stairs narrow and steep like those found in an old ship. I’d read about the Danish love of ‘hygge’ - a sense of cosy wellbeing - and, sure enough, in spite of being a virtual stranger (Steve knew Mads before we had got together but had never met Mette), these lovely people took us into their home and made us feel absolutely at ease. Not least because the conversation soon turned to toilet matters. After I’d sung the praises of the Copenhagen lavs, I realised that I'd struck a nerve. Mads and Mette, it turns ... read more

If you can get the measure of a place by its toilets then Copenhagen is probably the best city in the world, if comfortable ablutions are your thing. There is, from what I can tell, no such thing as a bog standard bog in Copenhagen. Which is good, because so far the Danish love of pickling everything in sight has meant that I've spent a disproportionate amount of time in them. You can visit the Dansk Design Musuem all you like but you only have to visit 'det lille room' to see that the Danes take their design seriously. Everything, down to the quality of the toilet paper has been pondered and hand picked. What I like most about them is that they tend to be a whole room, floor to ceiling. Nothing like their ... read more

I just traveled to Venice, Budapest, and Prague- all three major cities but incredibly different. Venice was beautiful and quite, but the people, like the Italians in Rome, were just not friendly at all. I appreciated the view and the atmosphere at night when things had died down. But after a few days, I was ready to leave. Budapest was amazing. In Rome and Venice, I missed Copenhagen so much. I missed the toilet seats, the people, the atmosphere and welcoming environment. But in Budapest, I was just happy. We had four days in Budapest and spent a couple going to tourists sites- a Van Gogh exhibit in Statue Park and some churches there as well. It had far less people than Rome and, as a result, the people did not detract at all from ... read more

4c, rain and wind (Ie - bloody freezing!) I could pretend that I experienced a lot of Danish culture and saw the majority of Copenhagen, but that’d be a big fat lie. I had merely 24 hours in between flights from Iceland to Finland - that didn’t allow for much ‘Danish time’ but I did get to see Copenhagen.. just.. Go easy on me if this entry doesn't exactly set the world on fire. I had visions of Copenhagen being a big messy city to get around, instead I was surprised to find a quaint and fairy easy city to navigate. The population is well under a million and all the streets are squeaky clean (even if noisy with the cobblestones). Arriving at 8pm is a pain anywhere, but doing it with a massive wheelie ... read more

Traveling 101; Get locals to work for you! This is one of my travel "rules" (more accurately, guidelines) If you don't know something, a local will, hence, get info from them or get them to organise things for you. "Get" is a strong work, maybe persuade... hmm no too manipulative, well lets call it "acquiring the help of the knowledge laden locals". So what am I talking about? Well I don't really know half the time, however on the train station in Copenhagen Airport was a girl. She was looking like one of those people who could tell you anything you wanted to know but had never had a chance to share her wealth of knowledge. A hidden eagerness to be a chaperon of kinds was laying just below the surface so I approached her. Weighed ... read more

You think I’m beautiful, and sometimes I feel it too. We’re going to Czech Republic soon, staying with the Ls in Olomouc, and then on to Praha for the rest of the week. At the end of April we’re going to Berlin, even though neither of us have much money, where we will have many more adventures. I think you’re serious, and sometimes I can see it in your eyes too. In other news: I met your mum and she loved me and I was happy. J visited and you hit it off. He reminded you of your sister. Something dramatic. Today I learned that videre means to “go on/forward” in Danish…and not the infinitive form of “to see”. I’m worried that N will throw himself into a recursive loop of depression and self-pity upon ... read more

Geo: 55.6763, 12.5681Our friends LnJ arrived on Friday afternoon so I skived off early to hang out and try a persian belly dancing restaurant on our road called "Persian Garden" which we had not been to before ....and was decorated totally in mirrors and was like being inside a disco ball - good in my book. The food was nice but they had no vege mains so we had selection of starters but I didn't teally care I was so mezmerised by the glitter. Then we went "Understellet bar" on Nørrebrogade (having already tried "Temple Bar" on the way down) and I really hope I never have to go there again, C likes it but I think its a horrible rocker student joint, this is the pub he had to break up a fight in last ... read more

Geo: 55.6763, 12.5681We had 3 visitors over, a friend from London COS came on the Friday night late but stayed in a hotel as we only have room for 2 guests so we collected him for Brunch in "Carlton" on St Patricks Day which was its usual good brunch Cph standard .... Then our next 2 friends KnN arrived at 3.30pm and first things first we all had a pint in town "Bjørns" to aclimatize them and then back to the gaff for a few easter brew beers, so you can see how this day was gonna go... Then for evening meal we went to "plan b" for organised beer tasting and tapas which very interesting but very inebriating - heres what we tried (I was sober enough to make a list but look at these ... read more
