There has been intermittent snow, both all night and during the day. I don’t know, but it is like a low pressure system has gotten stuck over Prague, the clouds come in with a load of snow, dump the snow and then go back somewhere for another load. Unlike last Saturday when it was clear and very windy now with the clouds and snow there is no wind. The snow falls almost straight down, falling softly and at times as large as goose feathers. It is a beautiful sight. The seminary has a small tractor with a blade on the front that runs around the streets each morning pushing snow away ... but leaving a thin layer on the cobblestones. This, in turn, makes the makes the cobblestones quite slick. Fortunately someone goes around each morning ... read more

At 11:45 pm on Jan. 2nd, Jason and I boarded a bus for Prague! After about a six hour ride, we got off the bus in a dark bus station and I thought I knew the way to the hostel. Of course, the map in my head looked nothing like the real thing, so we got lost. We ended up walking for about an hour and then hopping a tram without paying (following the advice of a local). Finally, we got to our hostel, "Hostel Elf" and was told that our room wouldn't be ready until 11am. So, from around 7am, we sat our exhausted bodies in the lobby and tried to sleep. At the precise moment that my booty touched the worn out leather of the couch, the hostel owner decided it was Czech Pop ... read more

Today was the first day of the librarians conference. Seminary librarians from many countries in Europe, especially Central and Eastern Europe have gathered to discuss topics of interest, to discuss problems and to explore the idea of developing co-operate interlibrary loan programs. There was general agreement that journal articles as they can be sent electronically by fax or by e-mail. Books are another matter as they have to be mailed and there are countries where the postal service is not only not reliable it is almost non-existant. One librarian said he tells his students if they take a book to their home town and it is due back in the library not to mail it as it will never be delivered. His request is they simply keep the book until they return to the school. He ... read more

It was much lighter this morning when we woke than other mornings. It became apparent why when we peeked out our venition blinds and saw that about half an inch of snow had fallen during the night. I knew no wind had blown during the night as the snow lay on and outlined every branch of every tree within sight from our window. We are in room F009. The “F” stands for building F and 009 is our room on the ground floor. The 100’s are on what we in the States call the 2nd floor, the 200’s are on the third floor and the top or 4th floor is where the rooms with numbers in the 300’s are located. Today was a sunny day with occasional clouds floating across the sky ... sunny but cold and windy. At breakfast we met Elke. Elke is the sole librarian at a seminary in Berlin, Germany. “I have 80,000 volumes,” she said, “and have about 30,000 entered on the computer. I really need a volunteer who understands German to help me.” Nancy suggested she get in touch with a Mennonite group as there are many Mennonites who understand German and could help her. Later at the reception center, as we were leaving to go downtown to sightsee, we met a woman, Eileen, who has just arrived to attend the librarians conference. Nancy introduced Elke to Eileen and told her of Elke’s problem. “She should get in touch with a Mennonite group” Eileen said. “There are many Mennonites that ... read more

Friday January 21, 2005 Nancy-- This is 1:44 p.m. here in Prague (Praha) and we have been here since 5:30 p.m. two days ago. Our trip on British Air (BA) was really very nice. We now know why everyone says BA is a wonderful airline. The plane itself was comfortable with excellent service and good food. Our luggage was handled well and arrived WITH us and in good condition. We certainly hope to be repeat users of BA in future travels. We had rested more than normal in the last few days before flying so we weren’t exhausted. Despite that we found we were too sleepy to stay awake during our long wait at Heathrow Airport. We put our arms through the straps on our backpack straps and fell asleep for short naps. Bill slept almost ... read more

Somewhere over the North Atlantic we passed from Tuesday to Wednesday. We landed at Heathrow International Airport a few minutes before nine. Our flight from London to Prague was not schedulce to leave until 2:25 giving us a five-hour layover. Deplaning out on the tarmack a bus drove us to Terminal no. 4 and we had to transfer 4 to Terminal 1, but this proved to be no problem as there are excellent signs pointing the passenger along the way to a shuttle bus that transports travelers from one terminal to the other. With the driver sitting on the right side I had an erie feeling of being in Japan. It has been a long time since I was in England. In fact, I have been in Japan several times since my last visit to Lodon. ... read more

let me first start out by saying: i want to hear NOTHING MORE about how wonderful the weather is in San Diego or anywhere else. fortunately, now i'm in London where i can walk around without a coat on and only be mildly uncomfortable. Prague was COLD. for some reason it felt colder than Vienna, even though it actually snowed in Vienna. i don't get it either. Courtney and i started Friday from Vienna to Prague, and the train ride that we thought was only going to be an hour ended up being closer to three. no big deal, except that means that the sun goes down earlier, which means the Sabbath begins earlier. so we got to the train station and bought passes for the underground, in which a taxi driver told us he could ... read more

The Czechs are a funny lot. It is as if the person that they spoke to just before you really pissed them off and so they decide to bite off your head for asking simple questions like directions. What is really surprising is that they can be sweet as honey just afterwards. I find that piling on heavy sarcasm just adds to the culture clash, but it is great fun. (3rd Nov) I am staying at a hostel in the party end of Prague and it shows. Life couldnt get any different here to Iran . It has a great bar downstairs, I popped down for a quiet drink with my book last night as I hadn't yet met anyone. Didn't read a page. Everyone had a story of a very heavy sesh the night before. ... read more

Prague (Sept 13 - 18) Well, what a ride. Getting couchettes (beds) on the night trains is well worth it. Unfortunatley, we did not! The seats don't recline, people smoke everywhere and it was about 14 hours long. We found it best to tie your head to the seat with a sweater to stop the nodding head/sore neck syndrome. Anyway, after 3 train changes, many passport checks and being kicked out of 1st class by the Czech train conductor (our passes were 2nd calss only in the Republic, we didn't realize this), we finally arrived in Prague and were very worn out. Our friends, Megan and Tom were so kind in offering us Tom's parents condo in Prague. The amazing generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Frohlich made the trip to Prague. We were very excited to ... read more
