Today is our last skiing day. Oh no! “The Small Young Gentleman” had been a little naughty this morning by screaming in the house ( although there were other guests and a family living there ), walking on the stairway with his ski-boots on and subsequently, fell and ended up sliding down the stairs with only the hallway table to break his fall. Luckily, the plants didn't fall on him or anything else for that matter and even luckier, he wasn't hurt. His punishment. No children's TV and no playing on the laptop this evening. And so the glum and pouting face. As I said previously, today is our last day of skiing and what a beautiful day it is. The sun was shining and the snow was sparkling. Yep! definitely, the day to end the ... read more

Today, we didn't have any appointments. We were finished with lessons and so we could take our time 'cos carrying two sets of skies and poles in ski boots can be very exhausting! We decided to take the 10:00 ski-bus and also use the time to take a few more photos of the scenery and also the other skiers. Roky is a place that now relies heavily on tourism and as such most of the houses were either pensions like our own, ( private homes rented out ), apartment hotels or chalets and most things were written in Czech and German with a sprinkling of English here and there. Its rare to hear English voices. They're all in France or Italy me thinks! It was a little misty today and it pretty early became difficult to ... read more

The afternoon before, I had had a chat with Peter as to payment and what would be needed in terms of lessons. The end result was an extra private lesson for “TSYG” and 4,700kc ( €188 ) from me for absolutely everything i.e. the cost of 2 half day private lessons for 3 people and 1 half day lesson for 2 people, the ski sets for 5 days and the helmets and goggles thrown in. Fabulous isn't it! A couple of months ago, a German governor caused a skiing accident in Austria in which himself and a lady had serious injuries. None of them were wearing a helmet and the lady, a mother of three, died a few days later. The minister himself has still not recovered and now has amnesia. Since then, everyone has been ... read more

Roky is a haunt for Czechs and East Germans so most people spoke both languages. We spoke German too but for extra security. I wanted an English-speaker thus we were partnered with George, a young 20-something Czech. We were a very mini-group of three. Veronika ( a 6 year old Czech ), “The Small Young Gentleman” ( another 6 year old ) and me ( a complete adult ) and we were going to have private lessons on Horni Domky!!! Horni Domky spreads out over the southern slopes of Lysá hora at an elevation of 630 to 1,315 above-sea-level. By way of comparison with others, it is one of the best ski locations in the Czech Republic in terms of its position, exemplary ski slopes and facilities. It is mainly popular for its large diversity and ... read more

I woke up at 5:00 and packed the last few bits. We planned to leave the house at 06:30 'cos I wanted to buy the Sunday papers! We managed to get out the door and 15 minutes later we were on our way. Bus M27, the underground train to the Zoo station and a change to the U2 to the IICC station. We were going by bus! Bus I tell ya!! To Rokytnice nad Jizerou in the Czech Republic!!! Roky is a favourite place of mine for seriously cheap skiing, most of the time guaranteed snow and under €1,00 per 0,5 litre beers! It is also one of the places of the Giant Mountains that was already settled in the 16th century. The municipality was founded around the year 1574. It was named after the Huťský ... read more

So after vaguely mentioning to a friend that I might volunteer for an English camp a few months ago, she promptly marched me up to one of the Czech girls to sign me up… I’ll admit that I very nearly got terribly ill and couldn’t go… But I’m so glad I did! It was located at a hotel (a term I’m using loosely… it was more like school camp facilities - including shared rooms and communal toilets) in the Czech mountains (complete with sheep grazing under the currently defunct ski lifts) and was organised by a Czech church here in Prague. There were about 30 kids aged 15-25, Czech leaders, plus the “native speakers” who all sign up to come for a week out of their summer holidays. Most of the kids were Czech, and the ... read more
