I started planning this adventure six months in advance when I had an invite to stay (free) in a multi-million dollar private ski resort in Eastern Switzerland. This was my first passport cuz Canada, Mexico, and the Eastern Caribbean Islands did not require a passport for citizens of the USA then. This one week in Hrvaska was to finally meet my direct relatives (separated by three generations and language). I took a bus from Zurich to Zagreb, and was met by a direct relative (Ljiljana) that spoke English. We walked around Zagreb for a hour or two taking in the sites. Then Ljiljana drove me to our family farm, outside of Zagreb, at Rakov Potok. I received a warm welcome from my relatives at the family farm. Long ago there were two brothers living on a farm at Garasici or Falascak. First was my grandpaw who moved to the Eastern USA. The second stayed in Hrvatska and established a nice family farm in Ratov Potok. The grandson of the second brother is Franjo, the patriarch of the Garasic clan. (Most of my relatives in Croatia spell their name Garasich.) I was met at the bus station in Zagreb by Ljiliana (a direct relative from just outside of the clan) who spoke English and translated my emails and organized the clan for my visit. We had a nice walk around Zagreb. After a while she drove me to the family farm in Rakov Potoc. Though few there spoke any English (and I speak zero Croatian), I received a very warm welcome from my good ... read more

My second time in Croatia was as special as the first time. What a beautiful place full of very friendly people! The natural beauty is almost unbeatable (Brazil is the first, so far)! Erik’s family house is in the island of Korcula. Erik’s mum was born there! Once you get there, you don’t want to leave anymore. The food is good, the people are amazing, prices are reasonable, the weather is great and is not too expensive to get there (yet!). Croatia is becoming very popular and every year, there is more and more people going there. We also went to Dubrovnik and it was fantastic! What a place! This time, we invited Sonia and Ale (our Italian friends) to come with us. Perfect company! Not a minute of boredom. We had so much fun! It ... read more

Who would have thought that war ravaged Croatia is the gem of the Adriatic. Sparkling blue beaches, an Ibiza type atmosphere in Hvar, and islands waiting to be discovered. Hvar island is my favorite, although i wish i would have had more time to explore the islands. chilled on a clifside cafe during the day and partied in a castle at night. it was trully unforgettable. it hurt leaving croatia, not because i had to go, but because i accidentally kicked an urchin and its spikes went into my foot and got stung by a bee as i smacked it cuz it got too close to my lasagna. well i guess theres a first time for everything.... read more

So I finally left Slovenia and headed south towards the Croatian coast just in time for a severe heat wave. Croatia has very rugged terrain and beautiful cities but overall it was a bit of a disappointment for me. I think it was mainly two things: the heat and the hordes of tourists. So if you go there, make sure it's not in July-August because the cities and beaches are just swarming. There's not too many hostels in Croatia so every time I got off a bus, train, or boat, I got swarmed by people trying to rent out a room. In Dubrovnik I stayed with a nice couple who didn't speak any English so everytime we needed to communicate, she'd call her daughter and pass me the phone. The lady made me a fabulous supper ... read more

we apologie for being very very delinquent with writing on a regular basis. we have no excuse. however, everything is going splendidly well. we are all having a blast and are not looking forward to parting ways with Grant in 3 days. Last you heard, we were in Nice, France. It was incredible there. We had a great time on the beach and going to Monte Carlo. Mark can say he officially gambled while he was there, losing 2 euros on a slot machine. After Nice we took a train north to Interlaken Switzerland where we got the chance to do some incredible moutain biking and exploring. The Swiss Alps are truly awe inspiring. After Switzerland, we planned on going to Italy and then onto Croatia, but because of and Italian rail strike we were forced ... read more

I went to Dubrovnik early in the morning after a nice ecspresso and a sad good-bye to my two Mostar-companions. I had little interest in crisscrossing Dubrovnik, since I, even though having heard of it's beauties, was to affraid of another tourist hell. So as I arrived to the busstation I decided to go directly to my accomondation for the night and spend some time relaxing. The guy from the hostel came picking me up from the busstation and with great fear I found him sitting on a scooter, which is one vehicle I've promised myself after an accident two years ago never to get up to. So with my bagpack in one hand a bottle of water in the other and a long dress on I looked rather pale about the idea. He laughed and ... read more

Croatia may seem like a pretty cutting edge destination for Brits, but for the whole of Eastern Europe, it's Spain - somewhere hot by the sea where the food's not too weird and they sort of understand what you're saying. Poles, Hungarians, Czechs, Slovaks, Slovenes and East Germans come here in their tens of thousands to drink beer, eat chips and meat and get sunburnt. It's just like holidays in the old days - people fall asleep drunk on the first day, get burnt, go and do it all again the next day. And don't care. This is their two weeks in the sun... The East European women are all slim, tall and beautiful; the men look like recently demobbed squaddies (and most actually are), fit, shaven, hard as nails. Until they get middle aged, when ... read more

I feel I owe Split to write a few words. I had really been looking forward to staying here and I had heard that there where good options for a cheap room in private accomondation. I am amazed by the beauty of Croatia's next largest city. It surely deserves to be on the UNESCO-list. The inner city with Diocletian's Palace is remarkable. But still I feel sad about being here. Some might have to do with the fact that most of the inner city is being renovated. You can't even view the golden gate and the palace is also covered with wood and plastic. But it also and maybe even more relate to all the poor people you meet. Only few are begging for money and for the blind eye it can therefor seem as a ... read more

I had reserved place on a smaller boat to take me on an excursion yesterday to the Kornati Islands. At 8.30 in the morning when all 45 people had boarded the boat, we went off still half sleeping, mostly wishing not to have spent 270kn for getting pulled out of bed on an early Sunday morning. As the boat, which was a nice small wooden boat (I know nothing of boats), left Zadar harbour, we were served coffee, juice and wine, while the speaker system at the boat started playing Waterloo followed by Dancing Queen and most of the ABBA-Gold collection. Alongside a nice fresh breeze, the music woke me as we sailed under the bridge of Ugljan and Pakšman and on to Dugi Otok, where we had a look at the very tall cliffs. ... read more
