We spent our last night in Split and then woke up and did some shopping. The jewelry in Hvar and Split has been beautiful. There are lots of handmade gold and silver ornate jewelry. There is also a lot of coral and turquoise. Every little shop has something a little different. The traditional Pursta or Bursta jewelry is only in Hvar and Split and is beautiful. Jon found a new and clean pair of shorts and a shirt at Diesel. We jumped in the little car and headed north to the Opatija Riviera. We took the highway that was a toll way. There was no speed limit and Jon had our little Fiat Punto going as fast as it would go (150kmh+). The area was so beautiful with lush green pine trees or grape vines. ... read more

Hvar Town, Hvar Island Croatia Europe » Croatia » Hvar By The Martini sJuly 3rd 2007Kelly Martin June 30, 2007 Last night we had a yummy dinner at a restaurant called Hanibal. We had some local Hvar Rose’ wine and dinner with lots of fish. Jon gave me some gorgeous gold circular earrings and matching ring for my anniversary present. The style of jewelry is only indicative of the Dalmatian coast. I don’t know exactly how you spell it, but it sounds like pursta or bursta. We checked out of the Palace Hotel and said good bye to Hvar town. On the way out we stopped at the Fortress on the top of the hill that dates back to the 16th century. We asked the girls ... read more

July 1, 2007 We drove to a little town called Stari Grad (Old Town) and put the car on a big ferry headed to Split. It was a 2 hr ferry ride. While we were on the ferry we passed though a very narrow strait of two islands. As we were coming into Split hanging out on the outside deck there was a dark cloud over the city and there were the most amazing bolts of lightning every few minutes and then you would hear booms of thunder. It was a truly amazing sky. We got back into our car and drove off the ferry into Split. The sky opened up and huge drops of rain pounded our little Fiat Punto. The search for the hotel Adriana began. We knew it was on the main ... read more

On Sunday in Split everything is closed except the restaurants and grocery stores. We took the advice of our waitress at the Adriana during breakfast and drove south of Split about 30 min to go to the beach. We found the perfect spot right near the San Antonio Hotel. We found a place that had small pebbles that was slightly inclined and laid our new Croatia beach towels there. We got in the very salty Adriatic Sea often because it was warm. You can sit in the water on the pebbles and it is really pleasant. Because it was Sunday and all of the shops are closed we decided to go check out the wine region Kastela. The Frommer’s guide had mentioned this area of interest because of it being the place of the origin ... read more

We slept in at the Palace Hotel and went to a little pastry bakery and picked up some chocolate and cheese filled pastries and then went to a little sea side cafe and got some coffee and hot chocolate to go along with. We walked down the little streets and purchased some beach towels from one of the little vendors. They are our new favorite towels. We went to the little market and got some lunch items to go. Then we went to the harbor and there are little water taxi ferry boats to take you to the other little surrounding islands. We paid 50 kuna ($10) to go to another little island Palmizana for the day to lay in the sun. We layed out our new towels and swam in the war Adriatic Sea. ... read more

We left rainy and cold London yesterday to arrive here to beautiful HOT and sunny Croatia. We flew from Gatwick to Dubrovnik on British Airways. When we arrived in Dubrovnik we were pleasantly surprised how sunny and hot it was about 33C or 91F. We read in the Frommer’s guide to take a bus into the center of old town which we did. The Croatians use Kuna for their money and it is about 5 Kuna to the dollar so our money goes a long way. This is a nice change from London. We took a cab to our hotel, The hotel Neptune. The hotel is very modern and nice and a short bus ride to old town. Once we got settled we went to the old walled city. It is so beautiful with all ... read more

Having made a visit to Salone, the Ruins of Roman City, we returned back to Split in the afternoon. It was a hot day and idle place to spent the afternoon was, this massive Forest Park near city central. Apparently the citizens of Split are very proud of Marjan Forest Park, and with good reason. Marjan Forest Park is a wonderful retreat for foot weary visitors. Towering pine trees shelter multiple walking trails and a pleasant escape from the sounds of the bustling city of Split. Why not have a look around and call it will be all over after Split. By any chance, I may return to Zagreb near future. ... read more

After leaving our boat crew in Split we jumped on the bus to Plitvice National Park. After 7 days of lying around and eating & not doing very much we were keen to get some hiking in and have a change of scenery. Plitvice is known for its beautiful waterfalls and can be done in a day trip but I'm very glad we stayed 3 nights. We arrived in Plitvice quite late in the evening and were pleased to find our hotel was in a beautiful location on the edge of the national park and had a large room, bathroom etc. It was very 70's though, and we wondered whether it was built in the 70's or designed in this way. I suspect the latter!! The next day we set out for a 3-4 hour ... read more
